Mr. Whitmer, a former Riley and Purdue star, began his duties with assistant coaches Hafner, Horvath, and Woiyts. Mr. Woiyts, who ioined the faculty in Steptember, played his football at Purdue. Greeting the coaches was an enthusiastic squad, but one lacking in experience. Only six lettermen were among the 70 reporting. Medich and Clark were in the backfield, Wegner, Gunn, Ton, and McKibbin in the line. No experienced guards were available. With only three weeks to work, Coach Whitmer tried out various combinations, but could not come up with a win in his debut. Fort Wayne Catholic, capi- talizing on the Wildcat's mistakes, defeated them 20 to 6. Victory came in the opening Conference game with Goshen. A touchdown by Tom Ellison late in the fourth quarter, proved to be enough for a 6 to O victory. Opening their home schedule, the squad de- feated Mishawaka 20 to 6. Touchdowns were scored by Hupka, Medich and Williams. Victorv however, was short-lived. Washington's Panthers, playing one 20 gem VARSITY FOOTBALL 1st Row: B. Galloway, T. O'Neil, D. Arick, D. Clark, H. of their finest games of the season, defeated them 37 to 12. The team bounced back with an exciting 12 to O victory over Fort Wayne North Side. Riley was heav- ily outweighed, but a stout defense brought victory. From here on injuries and the influenza outbreak plagued the team. The Central Bears, with their strong line and ample reserves, won easily, 48 to 7. Adams, led by Gene Phillips won 52 to 19. With a Conference record of 3 wins and 1 loss, Riley lost a chance to tie for the lead when the LaPorte Slicers topped them in a close game in School Field, 19 to 6. Elkhart's improved Blazers, conquerors of Adam's Eagles, next came to School Field for a non-confer- ence game. The outmanned Wildcats lost 46 to 6. In a game that was postponed by influenza, the team traveled to Michigan City for their last Conference tilt. Riley's only score in the 25 to 7 defeat, was a 70 yard run by Hupka, Although the overall record was not too impressive, Riley finished with a 3-3 Con- ference record, good enough for 5th place.
