A year of many successes, a few failures, ot hard work and some Ioating, of pleasant times at parties and Proms, of much happiness, some disappointments, a tew tears. It was a year to be long re- membered. Dramatics The Drama Club board members watch tryouts cluring the selection of a cast for Thirteen Clocks , the club's second production, Produced and directed by Mr. James Casaday, assisted by Miss Guilliams, the play attracted three capacity houses. Above are: Left to right, Bob Mahoney, Larry Paege, Mardell Mohnar, Judy Johnson, Beverly Bowers, Nancy Priddy, Sue Lewis, Mariorie McFarland, Mark Minor, John Skiles, Jay Stayley, and Richard Holderman. Sue Lewis, who played the Trouble Maker warns the Prince, Ideal Baldoni, that he will get into trouble if he calls the Duke bad names. 20 The charming Princess, Rebecca Czar, throws The Prince a rose To encour- age him during his journey to find The coveted iewels. The Prince returns with The iewels only To fear they will be seized by the Cold Duke of Coffin Castle. The Duke was played by Mark Minor. al' X' ,- 'X The Drama Clubs first production was The Straw Hat , a comedy in three acts. Here Nancy Priddy tainted at the news that a horse had eaten her straw hat. Mark Minor caught her and Lance Malling offered her some spirits. ,dr ,arf- Lance Malling tried to persuade his old girlfriend, Sue Lewis, owner ot the Chapeaux Shop, to sell him a straw hat to replace the one his horse ate. He had quite a problem because of their former engagement. 22 Jeanne McCracken, editor, Mr. Koch, faculty sponsor. Pat Eldridge and Pat Nelson, typists, Lillian Porter, art. Us Q fssi Nearly every girl in school wanted to elect a class in Miss Sellers' new Home Economics room. Not all made it, but those who did enjoyed a semester in the lap of luxury. These clothes might not have had the lines you would see in 5th Avenue shops, but Carol, Audrey and Janet know they have style the Avenue never produced. The girls made them in Miss Frueh's Clothing class These girls will know what to do if an acci- dent some day strikes in their home. Gloria and Marlene prepare a hot compress in Miss McAlpine's Home Nursing class. Linda, Nora, Mary Ellen, Gloria, Nancy, Sue, Carolyn and Barb watch how it is done. Jobs clidn't seem so scarce to those in the 9th grade Community Civics class. Melinda Martins points out numerous iob opportunities to Judy Mangum, Carol Smith, Tom Walling, and Tom Ellison. You never know how unusual of ours is until you study Global Geography Dorran Vogler described some air routes to Phyllis Blackburn, Lauren Cutner, Mary Keres and Larry Pae ge. When the Sociology class tackled the problem of Education, you were sure the class hour had been shortened. Remember the day Ernest Geske used charts to show the growth of public education? Advanced bookkeepers had an easy time of it when a course in electric adding machines was added. Dave, Deane, Martin, Nan- cy, Judy and Ed came up with a trial balance in no time in Mr. Koch's Bookkeeping class. Miss Wyrick's respondence letter writing. class in Business Cor- was more than just Remember how you watched the margin, punctuation, spelling and position of the letter heady and how you retyped it it it didn't measure up to requirements. 34 Girls in Miss Van Buskirk's Advanced Shorthand Classes learned to get things done neatly, accurately, and quickly. From these classes came the staff of girls assigned to local business houses under the cooper- ative plan. Ronnie Benninghoff was probably wonder- ing how much he could make as a profes- sional model. The sketchers were more con- cerned about the grade Miss Day would give them. The problem here is to discover how many pins had to be knocked over in order to win the game. But, it was no problem to see why girls would rather miss lunch than one of Miss Lauers' gym classes. There was something about the feel of clay in your hands that made Mr. Miller's Ceram- ics class so popular. Joe and Lillian never told us how their bowls looked after they came out ot the kiln. Linda Grubbs decided the man in Mr. Ol- son's math class problem would have to hurry to make the average called for. George, Doug, Nancy and John see how it was done. Trying a microscope for the first time was a thrill to anyone. Rodney Blain, Jessie Varrie, Jerry Maurer, Carolyn Haupert and Lois Baldwin say an entirely new world open to them in Mr. Barnlorooks General Science class. When the seniors tackled a problem in Mr. Shubert's physics class nothing was left to chance. Jack Tully seemed skeptical but Don, Dick and John were sure they had deter- mined the correct mechanical advantage ot a clitterential pulley. lf you are strong and healthy ut middle age, you may want to re- member it because of the essentials you learned in Mr. Parker's Health class. Dennis Reinke told you the stomach, tough as it is, could stand only so much abuse. Watching him were Alice Gentry, Delores Bau- man, Bruce Fettel, Jim Anderson and Sylvia Parks. A steam value, even though a cun- away model, tried the patience of Jerry Asbury in Mr. Webbs' Me- chanical Drawing class when he put its design on the drawing board This table, no doubt, still has its rightful place in the den of Larry Zeiger or Larry Hopkins. It might be interesting, at the first class re- union, to know it it is. The class is Mr. Mock's advanced woodwork. 37 The next time you see Riley's fine marching band at parades or foot- ball games remember a musician wasn't born overnight. Hours of practice alone and then in groups in the Junior Band were required to produce our Concert and Marching Bands. These serious tooters were Robert Mann, Richard Stahley, Artie Shidler, Phillip Rider, Dean Rooch, Dale Neiswender and Kirt Thomp- son. Will you ever forget the music that came through the halls most any hour of the day? The bands, or- chestra, and glee clubs tried their best to see that you didn't. Mr. Bolands' Music class seemed to en- joy their introduction to part sing- ing. Future Glee Clubbers come from classes like this. There were a number of heads to- gether the day Mr. Marsh asked you to dissect a frog in his Biology class. Dot Sailor and SarahYoder handled the tools. Among the watchers were Jean Hopkins, Joyce Mamula, Sue Kasprzak, Evadine Kagel, Leila Kirkley and Bonnie Clingaman. Women drivers! It looked like Mr. Ring wanted to be sure they knew all about the gadgets on the dash- board before taking the car out on the road. Donna, Jeanette, Diane and Susie enioyed this, but oh, that first time behind the wheel in traffic. Remember it now, girls - when 20 miles an hour seemed like 60? No doubt it made little or no sense to you when you learned that Jay Huckins and Carroll Forester were using a surface gauge to scribe a line on a block to be ground to exact measurements. Anyway, it's true. Now that classes are over, girls, get back to the kitchen. A good lathe will do a number of things, be it facing, boring, threading or drilling. With Roger Keller leading the way, Jim Ulrich scores one of the touch- downs in Riley's victory over La- Porte. Football 1956 season by playing score several times the Wildcats were held scoreless by a team destined to win the Conference by a score of 20 to 0. Riley next played Washington. The Wildcats scor- ed in the opening minutes of the game with a 15 yard run by Ulrich. It was not until the 3rd quarter that the Cat's scored in a pass to Miller which went 43 yards. Gunn scored next on a 14 yard pass by Baloun. Gene Davis scored late in the 4th quarter on a 58 yard run pass interception to win 27 to O. lt was in this game that Ron Spychalski broke his ankle. Unable to move the ball in the first half of the game Riley was defeated by Central by a score of 19 to O. The Wildcats did get to the 6 inch line but couldn't score. Riley next traveled to Mishawaka where a very good Maroon team commanded the whole game and racked up the impressive score of 28 to O. Riley Varsity The Wildcats opened the Adams. Altho threatning to Again on the road the Wildcats traveled to Elkhart. Riley tallied after a 76 yard drive with a pass from Baloun to Burns. Again gaining control of the ball the Wildcats moved 80 yards and scored on a 10 yard run by Miller. Leading at the end of the 1st. half by 13 points the Cats were quickly overtaken by the Blazers and lost by the score of 21 to 13. The Redskins of Goshen were next on the schedule. Early in the lst. quarter Riley scored on a 24 yard touch- down pass to Ulrich. The Redskins came back to make it 7 to 6 in favor of the Cats at the end of the 1st quart- er. ln the 2nd. quarter Riley scored on a 21 yard run by Miller. The final score came with a 50 yard pass to Gunn which made it 19 to 13 in favor of the Wildcats. The LaPorte Slicers came into town with a 3 game winning streak to their credit. The Cat's scored twice in the lst. quarter on a 4 yard plunge by Ulrich and in a pass to Baloun for 25 yards. The Slicers came back with one but Riley won the game 13 to 7. Again the Spoilers, The Wildcats played Michigan City who had racked up an impressive winning streak. Miller opened the scoring with a beautiful run of 80 yards to a TD. The Michigan City team came back to make it 14 to 13 in favor of Riley at the end of the half. The Cats tallied in the 3rd quarter and made it 21 to 13 giving the Cats their 4th and final win of the season. For the last game of the season The Wildcats travel- ed to Fort Wayne and played North Side and quickly moved the ball to the Redskin two from where Miller blasted over for the score. North Side tallied twice be- fore the half ended and led 14 to 7. The Redskins drove for another score to take a commanding 21 to 7 lead. Late in the 4th quarter Riley staged a rally to pull within 7 points as Miller tallied but a final drive fell short and Riley dropped a 21 to 14 decision. THE SEASON When coach Stewart first looked at his prospective team, he was faced with quite a problem. He had some experience to count on, but the squad lacked height, only one going over 6 feet. Riley started slow with two defeats, but then came back with a win over Glenn, 68-45, only to be sent into a tail spin by de- feats at the hands of Mishawaka and Terre Haute Garfield, 76- 50, and 7l-45. Washington was defeated in an overtime, 40-38 in a game which proved to be a spark for the Wildcats. They then won two straight before dropping the championship game of the John Adams Holliday Tournament to the host, 59-42. The Cats kept up their winning ways and defeated Niles, 83- 47, and North Side Fort Wayne, 7l-45. This sudden burst brought their record very close to five hundred per cent with 6 wins and 7 losses. After gaining prestige, Riley found they had two potential scorers in Dan Barnes and Dennis Reinke. The task rebounding was very capably handled by Buz Wintrode and Dave Gunn. The squad then dropped seven games though many of them were in doubt until the closing minutes. LaPorte and Riley bat- tled on even terms with the Slicers winning in the last seven seconds, 58-53. Central's conference champs continued their practice of routing their opponents by handing Riley a tremendous 96-49 defeat. Unable to find the necessary punch in the last half, the Wildcats fell to John Adams for the second time 72-51. lt was this game that Alice Torok was crowned Basketball Queen. When Elkhart carne to South Bend, they brought with them a very fine center, Ted Luckenbill, but his play did not compare with the effort put forth by Dan Barnes as he scored 30 points in a losing cause. After a very good draw in the Sectional, Riley returned to the win column with victories over New Carlisle and Washington- Clay, this advance put Riley into the finals, but Lakeville domi- nated play to win 65-48. Thus ending a fair season for the Riley team, with an overall record of 8 wins and i5 losses. They were defeated by T3 points. - Th swimmers went through the rest of their season over- powering such opposition as Hammond, 48-29, South Bend Central, 49-28, and Valparaiso, 46V2-3OV2. During this display of power, many school records fell. John Buchanan, a freshman, broke the school record in the Breaststroke several times. At the time of the City Meet, the strength of the squad was reduced by several cases of pneumonia, and they finished second to Central, followed by Adams and Wash- ington. By the next week, many had recovered and the squad won the Conference Meet with a score of 63. Next was Horace Mann of Gary with 39 points, followed by Adams with 38 points, and Hammond, 34. They finished the season with a record of T2 wins and 2 losses and the Conference championship. CROSS-COUNTRY Cross-Country Coach Robert Smith enioyed his most successful season last fall in coaching his team to many championships. First among them was the championships of the Eastern Division of the Northern Indiana High School Conference. Then came the fifth straight City Meet Title, the East-West Conference Championship and the Sectional Championship. The Wildcats came in sixth in the State Meet, higher than any South Bend team has ever finished. The team this year was paced by three year man, Louis Cass, who finished third in the Big Conference Meet and fourth in the Sectional, two year man, David Fritz, who was sixth in the Sectional, Captain James Manuszak, Rodger McKee, Bill Barnes, and Ken Selby. The team looked none too good in their first meet, nearly losing to Breman. Next, they lost to Mishawaka, the only time of the season that the Smithmen were to taste defeat in a dual meet. ln the first Conference double dual of the season they ran over Central and Goshen on the picturesque Erskine Golf Course. This meet prompted a remark by Coach Smith at the awards assembly that this is one team that can beat Central. Then the har- riers traveled to Michigan City and revenged their earlier defeat by beating Mishawaka and Michigan City in the process. On the Monday following this brilliant win the Wildcats obtained their only slam of the season by plac- ing five men ahead of Niles first man. A perfect conference season was finished the follow- ing week by walloping Elkhart and Adams at the Elkhart course. ,From here on the season became even more exact- ing than it had been, for one mistake would spell defeat. But the Smithmen refused to make that mistake. They ran Central and Adams in the City meet and walked away with it, taking the first four places. Next they went to Valparaiso to run in the East-West Conference Meet in which one hundred and forty runners ran, and the battling for position was actually savage. They won this one going away. Then came the Sectional at which they won to qualify for the State Meet. ' Q I Ed Mikel ln a meet that figured to be fairly easy the harriers walked away from Culver's Kaydets. Then with the spotlight on them The Wildcats went to the State and while not returning victorious they finished sixth. In the season the team won eleven and lost only one. At the end of the season Louie Cass was picked as the winner of the Booster Club Award and Jim Manuazak was named Captain to follow in his brother's footsteps. .. Led by seniors Pozil, Pahl, Overmeyer, and Jackson, the team led Riley to another fine season in track. After their first meet, the team continued on their winning path by posting wins over New Carlisle and Bremen in a tri- angle meet. ln their next meet, the M.a- roons from Mishawaka proved too strong for the game men from Riley. The Smith- men proved to all that they were not dead by sweeping their next two meets with Plymouth and Culver Military. In their last three meets, the team showed great potential by winning two, and los- ing to Washington by a close margin. ln the City meet, the team was led by Cass,-Fritz, Pozil, and Pahl in the mile and 440 yard run. Gary Monus set a new city record in the broad jump. The mile relay team of Pahl, Pozil, Payton, and Holmgren also set a new city record.
