Fullback Jim Pare scored the opening touchdown of the game and first of the season as he ploughed 2 yards for the tally. Odusch added the conversion. Seconds later Riley recovered a fumble in the Devil end zone for a safety and a nifty interception of a Devil aerial set up Dick Vincek's l yard drive for the second touchdown. Just before the intermission John Nevelle threw a T. D. aerial to Jack Kudlaty all alone by the goal. Then Kudlaty's interception gave Hubert Griffith a T.D. when he plunged five yards for the final tally. Odusch converted to run the score to 36-0. FORT WAYNE UPSETS CATS IN CONFERENCE TILT Although favored in its second battle and first conference tilt the mighty Cats fell to a determined Fort Wayne eleven 13-6. Arnie Layman stunned the crowd by taking the opening kickoff back a long 61 yards before being nailed on the Archers 29. A tough North Side defense held the Cats and immediately after they re- ceived the ball Quarterback Larry Koehl uncorked a 60-yard pass to end Don Ellison setting up Jack McGarry's touchdown run and conversion to put the Archers ahead 7-0. Riley then went to work with Kudulaty and Nevelle hitting receivers again and again until Kudlaty Gnally tagged Fred Odusch for a T.D. The Northsiders fought right back and ended Riley's winning streak scoring with iust seconds to play. LAPORTE FALLS TO KELLYMEN Riley showed great possibilities as the Cats got back on the winning trail in conference ranks putting on a great brand of ball by trounc- ing the Laporte Slicers 19-0. A Slicer fumble gave Dick Vincek the opportunity to tally the Cats first touchdown. Another long drive ended when fullback Jim Pare rammed over from the two-yard stripe sending Riley ahead 12-0. Arnie Layman started another drive moving the ball 42 yards in three tries. A Kudlaty to Odusch pass gave another 18 and the stalky Pare scored the third T.D. Odusch converted. A sensational 71-yard run by Laporte's Bucky Haag in the final seconds was stopped on the 21 giving the Wild- cats their second shutout in three attempts. 9 AL A GOG CH Ad C d THE HGOSIER POET I95lI- THE SENIOR CLASS of THE JAMES WHITCOMB RILEY HIGH SCHOOL SOUTH BEND, INDIANA p r e s e n f s . . . CATS TRIP MICHIGAN CITY Michigan City was tough and proclucd a stubborn team but the Wildcats managed a thrilling 'I9-I4 victory for their second win in conference play. The main factor in Riley's victory was a great comeback after City's Pat Gardner picked a screen pass out of the air and ran 46 yards to put the Red Devils out front. Layman quickly dashed 37 yards to put the Cats back in the game as Odusch's toe gave Riley a 7-6 lead. Layman then tossed an aerial to Whitaker who scored Riley's second T.D. City still wasn't finished and Bob Johnson ran 35 yards to a touchdown after gathering up a Wildcat fumble. Jack Kudlaty connected with Odusch for the final score managing a Cat victory. KOVATCH NIGHT A CELEBRATED VICTORY For the twelfth straight year the Cats have never tasted defeat from an Adams Eagle eleven and Riley trounced the Eagles 13-0, in celebrating Ernie Kovatch night A strong Cat defense and end Fred Odusch gave the Cats no worries in shutting out Adams making them victims number four. Dick Whitaker and Don Coar outstand- ing on defense paved way as Vincek piled up yardage for the Cats. Jack Kudlaty threw a specialty to Odusch for the first touchdown while Fred was making a brilliant catch with Adams defenders on his back. Later Pare returned a punt to the Adams 45 but the drive was halted. Tom GoIdberry's aerial was absorbed in Odusch's hands as he raced T4 yards to the final Wildcat tally. CAVEMEN CRUSH WILDCATS Opening their fourth loop battle and hoping for an upset the fighting Cats took it on the nose from a polished Maroon eleven 49-I4. Jack Kudlaty gave the Cats an early lead when he threw a pass to Dick Vincek for the first touchdown. Mishawaka came back with two quick touchdowns with Bob Swartz scoring and then sending an aerial to Kocsis. Dave Hintz then ran 30 yards to another Misha- waka tally. ln the second half the Maroons were at it again scor- ing another three touchdowns while Riley managed one on a 53- yard connection from John Nevelle to end Odusch. Odusch con- verted ending the game. PANTHERS NIP CATS Highly hopeful Wildcats ran into a couple of fellows by the name of Jim Easton and Mike Mondovics and a powerful Washington crew, only to be defeated in a thrilling ball game 20-12. Joe Brazier took an Easton pass on the 33 and took of? to a Panther touchdown in the first period. A Brazier fumble set up a Cat score in the second stanza when a pass from Kudlaty to Dick Vincelw set the ball on the 8 where Joe Meszaras scooted into the end zone for the score. Mondovics blocked the first of two extra points that eventually brought the Kellymen to defeat. Washington's second tally came when Steve Rzepnicki scored on a Easton aerial. A long pass from John Nevelle to Kudlaty gave the Cats their final score as Kudlaty galloped the remaining 47 yards. Easton inter- cepted a Cat pass to notch the game for Washington and ran to a touchdown. The Panthers went on to win the conference cham- pionship, the East-West conference battle from East Chicgao Wash- ington, and the mythical State Championship. CENTRAL DEFEATS CATS Riley Wildcats closed their T953 conference race with a 21-6 lick- ing from the Central Bears. With iust minutes gone in the first stanza Riley's John Karkiewicz recovered a Bear fumble on the Cen- tral 40. Dick Vincek scooted through cented for 35 yards to give the Cats their first and last score of the ball game. From then on it was Jim Dulcet as he racked up two tallies to put Central ahead 'I4-6. In the fourth period quarterback John Nevelle hit Dick Whit- aker and Jim Pare on short connections but the Cats were unable to score. Jim Dulcet scored the final T.D. for Central on a 21-yard iaunt. BLAZERS RAP KELLYMEN The night was cold but our pigskin players were colder as they traveled to Elkhart to be beaten by a powerful Blazer crew 35-7. Elkhart's ground attack was too much for Riley as Kelly and Russo ran for two quick touchdowns early in the game. Riley's only tally came late in the second period when quarterback John Nevelle threw a short pass to Dick Whitaker for the score. Odusch added the extra point. ln the second half Elkhart was at it again running and passing for three more tallies to send the Cats into their fifth loss of the season. Odusch receiving a Kudlaty aerial . . . trying for a spectacular catch of the pigskin . becoming discouraged when he drops the ball iust inches from the goal Co-Captain s Dick Whitaker and Don Coar watch tensely the flip of the coin before Adams, Riley tilt. WILDCATS CRUSH RAMBLERS Spike Kelly's Riley Wildcats closed out the 1953 football season in great form as they defeated the highly rated Mooseheart Ramb- lers 'I9-0. Quarterback John Nevelle hit Dick Vincek and Fred Odusch early in the game with beautiful aerials but both times the ball was dropped. Another T.D. was called back because of a penalty before the Kellymen could get started. A 70-yard march was climaxed with Vincek running 8 yards to a quick second half tally. On the next drive Vincek scooted the final 'I3 to give the Cats a comfortable 12-0 margin. Odusch added the extra point. On another long drive fullback Jim Pore smashed 1 yard to the final touchdown for the Cats. Riley ended the campaign with 5 wins and 5 losses. FOOTBALL BANQU ET At the football banquet in the school cafeteria on November 24, Dick Vincek received the most Valuable Player award and Jim Thompson the Kiwanis Award for sportsmanship and scholarship. The 1954 co-captains Dick Vincek and Max Bauman were intro- duced by Coach Kelly. Here's the ball, now Iet's gal , said Head Coach Charles Stewart at the start of the basketball season. Looking on are assistant coaches, Rzeszewski, Barnbroolc, and Cooper. 1 THE 1953-54 BASKETBALL STORY While this 1953-54 season might not be iudged a successful one from the wins and losses, it will be called a fairly successful one by many who knew of Coach Stewart's probelms at the beginning. With only three returning lettermen and CI host of untried and willing boys to fit into the lineup, Coach Stewart fielded a team that in many games reached a high point of perfection. As the season progressed, it could be seen that the material on the present squad, which will return next year, and the training and experience that they were receiving will most likely make the Riley live a formidable unit in 1955. A resume of the 1953-54 season follows: Coach Charlie Stewart's hardwood quintet opened the 1953-54 basketball season with an impressive 72-53 win over Glenn High School. Coach Stewart sent eleven players into the game but Fred 0dusch's 25 points provided the margin for the Wildcats. Nlzfsity Basketball Team Traveling south for their next two games, the Cats came home with a 'I-2 record. They met the highly rated Crispus Attucks and were de- feated 58-48. Jack Kudlaty led the Cat attack wih 'IB points. Unable to hit from the floor, the Stewartmen were whipped by Terre Haute Wiley the following evening 56-34. Jack Kudlaty had 8 points in the Wildcats losing efforts. ln Inter-city competition, Riley traveled to nearby Mishawaka to open conference play. After a 19-'I9 halfitme, the Cats got behind the Cavemen 32-25 and could never catch up, losing 60-37. Burnie Maurek and Orvester Austin tallied 8 and 7 points respectively for the Cats. Opening the city series with South Bend Washington, the Wildcats still couldn't get hot and dropped their fourth straight ball game and second Row 'I-Feick, Maurek, Lovisa, Manager Ramey, Austin, Young Yordanich. Row 2-Strykul, Odusch, Kudlaty, Anderson, Medich, McElhiene. straight conference tilt 45-32. Still lacking in basketball know- how, the Cats scored only 2 points in the third period when Roman Lovisa hit a long one hander with three seconds left to play. .lack Kudlaty chipped in I2 points for the losers. Brazil was the next opponent for the Cats and again the Riley cagers were defeated 54-44. Fred Odusch was high for Riley, with 12 points. Still with lack of experience and much greenness, Coach Stewart found Q NEW starting five for the Washington-Clay game. Trailing 29-28 at the intermission, the Cats came back in the second half and won easily over the Colonials 65-57. George Medich netted 8 points in the fourth honors quarter to give the Cats their margin, but Austin held scoring with 14. This was victory number two for the Riley quintet. ln the Riley Invitational Touruney, held at John Adams, the Wild- cats were matched against Hammond, the tourney favorites, and upset the big boys from Calumet 68-64 in an afternoon contest. Austin cinched the game with two free throws 30 seconds before the final gun. The game was previously tied four times and each team traded basket for basket until the Cats pulled ahead 61-52 for the longest lead of the game. Hammond came back strong and then Austin added his fatal free throws. Odusch led the Cat scoring with 22 points and Kudlaty hit for 16. This upset matched the Wildcats with Gary Froebel in the championship game. Riley held only brief leads and Gary pulled away to notch a 50-39 win. Kudlaty was high man with 13 points. Starting into the regular schedule again, the Wildcats were upset by the Plymouth Pilgrims 45-40, and mauled by Fort Wayne North- side in a NIHSC game, 71-53. Fred Odusch and Orvester Austin shared scoring honors in the Plymouth game with 11 points, Against Northside, the Wildcats stayed close in the first quarter, suddenly col- lapsed, and never caught fire again. Dropping their third conference game and eighth rn season play Austin snared game scoring laurels with 16 points, netting 10 in the third period, The Cats climbed out of the NIHSC cellar by tripping the Laporte Slicers 52-41 for their first loop win of the season. Riley was paced by Fred Odusch's 17 points. Starting the tougher opponents, Riley played host to South Bend Central in a conference city tilt. Trying to over- come the basketball iinx the Wildcats stayed close until the final period and Central took advantage to pull away at the gun 68-54. Odusch's 22 points couldn't match Central's well balanced scoring attack. Bad luck hit again as the Stewartmen were beaten by Auburn 55- 49. Riley Ied throughout the game but Auburn rallied in the final period of this see-saw battle to turn back the visiting Cats. Riley was led again by the 15 point performance of Fred Odusch. John Adams defeated the Wildcats 52-47 in a city contest. The loss put the Cats in the city cellar. This was Rileys' eleventh loss and fourth in conference play. FRED ODUSCH SETS TO RING THE HOOP FOR A 2-POINTER IN THE WASHINGTON-CLAY GAME. Losses to East Chicago Washington 64-52 and Elkhart in a NIHSC game 78-53 seemed to give the Stewart crew what they needed as the Wildcats whipped Hammond Clark 51-48 and Goshen 60-53 in their next two outings. Jack Kudlaty led the southsiders in the Clark game with 14 points. Against Goshen, the Cats won their second con- ference game and sixth game of the season. This was the longest game of the season. Taking an early lead on McElhenie layup, the Cats stayed ahead throughout the contest. Odusch netted 20 points and McElhenie 10, as a result of 68 fouls called, which tied the foul-making record. Riley traveled to Michigan City to close out the 1953-54 basketball campaign and was beaten in a conference game 65-48. After own- ing a 13-12 first period lead, the Wildcats lost all hopes for an upset. Ronnie McElhenie and Fred Odusch shared scoring honors with 13 points apiece. Riley had a season record of 6 wins and 'I4 losses and in conference play, Riley won 2 and lost 9. ln the Sectional, Riley was pitted against the State Champion, Central Bears. The game was a thriller from start to finish. Riley led 13-12 at the end of the first quarter and only one point separated the teams at the three-quarter mark. Central finally overcame the Wildcats in the fourth quarter, the Bears winning 51-46. Coach Charlie Stewart giving final instructions to the team before the Central game. She died on May 3 after an illness of several months. Few have had the opportunity to give so many years to the training of the youth of our country. Miss Van Scoy looked upon this as a privilege. She loved boys and girls, and delighted in watching them grow in mind and in body. Many, indeed, are living richer and fuller lives today, because they came under the influence of this noble lady. 'I' NV! .J I o Q lf' ei? Our Year of Achievement Who can forgef fhe day we enfered Riley as eighfh graders? Remember fhe days of our class parfies - fhe eighfh grade picnic, fhe Freshman Frolic , Cupid's Capers , and our Junior Prom, Blue Moon . These were fhe days of hayrides, sock hops, formals, movie and T.V. dafes. coke parfies, club meefings, and fhe girls fradifional paiama parfies. When fhe day finally arrived fhaf made us Seniors, we could hardly believe if. We all looked fhe same. and we didn'f feel a bif differenfl Yel' fhese were our days of glory!
