OUR CONFERENCE CHAMPS For the first time since I937, the Riley Wildcats took the Eastern Division Championship of the Northern Indiana High School Confer- ence. Given a large and experienced line but faced with a shortage of experienced backfield material, Paul Spike Kelly soon molded the Wildcat eleven into a team of truly championship caliber. MICHIGAN CITY, 6, RILEY, O An experienced Wildcat line and an inexperienced backfield trav- eled to Michigan City for the first game of the year. Michigan City capitalized a 'Cat fumble by jumping to a quick lead in the first few minutes of the game, when Trottier went 27 yards on an end around JIPPING SIMPSON EGIERSKI KRIDER MOTTS D. RILEY, 205 MISHAWAKA, 0 The 'Cats rang up the first win of the year as they over-powered the oft-beaten Mishawaka Maraons, 20 to O. The first Riley gridder to cross the goal line was Ophir Rightsell who grabbed a ten yard pass in the end zone from Ken Sult. Redheads, Jim Altic and Louie Jipping also scored in the second half. Dick Geraghty made two out of three point after touchdown attempts. WASHINGTON, 13: RILEY, 7 Although hitting pay dirt first, when Blackie Motts went off guard for two yards, the Riley Wildcats were unable to keep their victory ways as Washington's Panthers won a l3 to 7 decision at School Field. Bill Holzl:-ack's runs of one, ten, and 45 yards, Lukowski's runs of one, and 13 yards, and Davis's two points after touch- down were responsible for the 32 points run up by the Roosevelt eleven. Riley's lone score came on a pass from Ken Sult to Louie Jipping. A sad note started the game when L.en Smorin broke his leg in the first few minutes of play. This was the first time an East Chicago Roose- HILL SULT HILLRING MAHONEY velt team had been scored on in a playoff game, a fitting end to a great Riley season. I HOOSlER RILEY, 46: WOODROW WILSON, 24 With starters Poynter, Jipping, Krider, Altic, and Hartman, the Riley Wildcats opened the season with on easy win over Wilson, 46-24. lt was Riley's game all the way, as they posted leads of I0-2 at the first quar- ter mark, and 25-6 at the half. High men for the Wild- cats were forward Jim Krider with l3 points and guard Bill Hartman with nine. RILEY, 48: CRAWFORDSVILLE, 35 The Crawfordsville coach found that the platoon sys- tem doesn't pay, as the Wildcats ran up an early 9-2 lead against the Athenian second stringers. The first string was put into the ball game, but that didn't seem to help much as Riley rolled up a 2l-l0 lead at half time. The lead was increased to 20 points, before Brad- ley, ace Crawfordsville guard, got hot with ten points in the lost quarter. Krider was again high for the Wild- cats getting I7 points, with Altic getting eleven. ADAMS, 48: RILEY, 45 The Adams Eagles overpowered the Riley Wildcats, 48-45, to inflict the first loss of the season upon the 'Cots Adams was off to a I4-lO first quarter lead, but the Wildcats managed to go out in front by half-time, 2l-l8. However, in the third period, the Eagles went to HYSTERIAH town, outscoring the Wildcats 2l-ll to grab a 39-32 lead by the end of the quarter. The Wildcats cut down the lead some but just couldn't quite make it as the game ended, Adams, 485 Riley, 45. Altic was high for the 'Cats with I7, followed by Krider with ten. MISHAWAKA, 51: RILEY, 41 The Riley Wildcats put up a good struggle in the first six minutes, but couldn't keep up with the rangy Maroons as they lost their second game of the season, 5l-4l. lt was a one sided game all the way as the Wild- cats were outclassed by Tracy, Beniamin, and Company. Dan Merrill and Jim Altic led the Riley scores with nine and eight points, respectively. RILEY, 385 HAMMOND CLARK, 35 The Wildcats bounced back from two straight de- feats to down a good Hammond team, 38-35. In the first half, it looked as if it would be Clark's game as they rolled up a 26-l5 lead over the Wildcats. How- ever, the Wildcats come back fighting with I4 points to Clark's three in the third period to even the score at 29- 29. From then on, it was Riley all the way as they went on to win. Merrill was again high for the Wildcost, fol- lowed by Altic with ten, and Krider and Hartman with six each. 'ki' KRIDER ALTIC SIMPSON 'ki' RILEY, 395 BRAZIL, 33 Neither team could hit in the early part of the game as the first three minutes and 44 sec'- onds saw Riley and Brazil lacked in a scoreless duel. Finally, Merrill made a free throw to take the lid off the basket and the Wildcats went on to a 20-I2 lead at half-time. The 'Cats stood oft a fiery third period spurt by the Brazil team and went into the final period leading 32-24. From then on, it was Riley's game as the Wildcats won 39-33. High men for the Wildcats were Merrill with I3, Altic with eight and Simpson with seven. RILEY, 491 PLYMOUTH, 44 lt looked as though the Pilgrims from Plym- outh were going to win, as they piled up a 6-0 lead at the beginning, but Riley came back with seven straight points to go into the lead. By half-time, however, the'Cats were back in the hole again, trailing 2I-20. ln the third pe- riod, the superior height of the Wildcats showed to good advantage as they knotted the game at 36-36. They then broke the tie and won out over the Plymouth five, 49-44. Krider got I7 points for the Wildcats while Merrill collect- ed ten. RILEY, 485 MISHAWAKA, 40 The Wildcats went into the finals of the Holiday Tourney by avenging their earlier sea- son loss to the Maroons. The Maroons went out in front during the first period, and the Wildcats went to the locker room at half-time, trailing. Again, the Wildcats came bouncing back to narrow the margin to six points at the third period mark. Jim Krider got hot for the Wildcats as he sunk three quick baskets for Riley, and the 'Cats were never behind after that. As Coach Wakefield said after the game, lt's the best Christmas present l could have. High for the Wildcats were Krider with I7 and Jipping with twelve. WASHINGTON, 39, RILEY, 37 lt looked as if the Wildcats were going to have an easy time of it as they pulled out to an early I4-4 lead. The Panthers slowly started eating away the lead and tied the score in the final seconds of the game. Then, Washington's Gilkey and Robertson put the game in the bag for the West Siders by sinking two charity tosses. Krider and Jipping were again high for the 'Cats, getting I4 and nine points, respec- tively. WASHINGTON, 565 RILEY, 48 ln their second game within a week, the Wildcats were again downed by the Washing- ton five by the convincing margin of 56-48. Paced by Willey Gilkey's 23 points, the Pan- thers seemed to have just too much for the Wildcats. lt was the second loss without a win in conference play for the 'Cats. Merrill was high for the Riley five as he garnered I8 points, Hartman got eleven. CENTRAL, 605 RILEY, 30 Central was red hot, and the Wildcats were ice cold, as the Riley team suffered its third conference loss. Coach Wakefield substituted often in the game as he searched vainly for a group of boys who could hit a good percent- age of their shots. Finally, in the fourth period, the Riley reserves saved a little bit of face by scoring I4 points, but it was the only bright spot in a very poor showing by the Wildcats. Hartman got twelve points to lead what Riley attack there was. irir MERRILL JIPPING HARTMAN 'ki' if DRIGGS LAMBERT SNYDER irir LA PORTE, 407 RILEY, 39 The Wildcats blew a first half lead to lose a heart-breaker to the Slicers from LaPorte. The Slicers sliced a 28-23 Riley half-time lead to a third quarter score of 31-30 with the Wildcats still out in front. With seconds remaining, and the score tied at 38-38, La- Porte's Hostetler sank two free throws to give them the game. Again the 'Cats suffered from a lack of scoring punch, as they got but eleven points in the last half. Krider led the Riley at- tack with twelve points, followed by Merrill with eight. ELKHART, 435 RILEY, 28 lt was the same old story as the 'Cats failed to hit from the field in losing 43-28 to the Blue Blazers from Elkhart. The Wildcats were held to two field goals in the first half as they went to the lockers at half-time, trailing 28-10. In the third quarter, they rallied to bring the score up to 34-24. The Wildcats could get but four points in the final quarter as Elkhart's reg- ulars returned to the game. Again, Krider was high for the 'Cats with twelve points. CULVER, 427 RILEY, 35 'The 'Cats suffered their fifth loss in a row as they were beaten by a slow starting Culver team, 42-35. For most of the game, it looked as if the Riley five were going to wing but, cheered on by their home crowd, the Indians erased the lead and went on to win. High for the Wildcats were Dan Merrill with eleven points and Bill Hartman with ten. RILEY, 55, GOSHEN, 45 The Riley team came back to win their first conference game of the season by the com- fortable margin of 55-45. Using a reshuffled lineup of Krider and Hartman at guard, Altic and Whippo at forward, and Merrill at center, the team looked better from all angles, as their ball-handling and shooting improved. Though Goshen took an early 11-7 lead, the Wildcats came up with four quick baskets to make it 15-ll at the end of the first quarter. By half-time, the lead had been increased to 31-23. They went on to a 46-32 lead at the third quarter mark, and, with reserves playing most of the last period, came out with a final score of 55-45. Jim Altic looked good as he garnered 18 points, and Merrill got 13 for second among the Riley scorers. RILEY, 53: ADAMS, 44 The Wildcats got revenge for their early season loss to the Eagles as they won in a hard fought game, 53-44. lt was close up to the last quarter, with the period scores reading 9-8, 21-20, and 34-34 as the Adams five tied the ball game up by the end of the third quar- ter. It was in the last period, that the 'Cats got hot as they amassed 19 points. Krider led the way in that period by putting in five bas- kets. He also got ten other points to give him the evening's high point honors with 20 points. MICHIGAN CITY, 627 RILEY, 46 Led by Tanski and Witek, the Michigan City Red Devils came out on top in a game that was closer than the score indicates. By means of a second quarter rally, the Red Devils were leading with the score of 27-23 at helf-time. lt looked as if the Wildcats were going places as Jim Krider put in two fast baskets, but after this brief spurt, the Michigan City five went on to post up a 41-34 lead at the end of the third quarter. ln the last period, the roof fell in as the Red Devils proved very devilish in getting 21 points. High men for the Wildcats were Dan Merrill with 16, Krider with twelve. 'ki' WHIPPO BRADFIELD HILL 'ki' John Campbell, Don Billiau, and Bob Markham, basketball managers, discuss which ball to take along for one of the Riley home games. RILEY, 585 ROCHESTER, 55 Despite the loss of Jim Krider due to a cold, the Riley Wildcats came through quite well to beat a shorter Rochester team, 58-55. lt was an even battle all the way, with the 'Cats man- aging o keep in the lead most of the time. The Zebros, led by their little guard, Denton, almost overtook the Wildcats, but the effort was a little too late as the gun went off with Riley protecting their three point lead. High for the Wildcats were Dan Merrill with I7 points, and Lambert, who sparked a 22 point third-quarter with eleven. WASHINGTON-CLAY, 585 RILEY, 45 ln a hard-fought ball game, the Wildcats were defeated by the Coloniols from Washing- ton-Clay, 58-45. It was a close game most of the way, as the Coloniols posted slim leads of ll-8 and l7-l5 at the first two quarter marks. In the third period, the Colonials out- scored the Wildcats 20-16 to make the score 37-3l ot the end of the quarter. From then on, it was clear sailing for the Washington- Clay team as they ended up with a margin of l3 points. High for the game was big Don Schlundt ot the Colonials, with 22 points, while Dan Merrill's welve was high for the Wildcats. Coach Wayne Wakefield gives the boys a few last words af instruction as they huddle before the Adams game. TH E Ne STEAM Back row-left to right: D. Lund, G. Peoples, R. Swanson, D. Rhoodes, D. FORT WAYNE NORTH SIDE, 527 RILEY, 36 The 'Cats dropped their last regularly sched- uled game to a tough North Side quintet by the score of 52-36. Jim Krider got I4 points but not much help from the rest of the team as the Wildcats were clearly outclassed all the way. CENTRAL, 695 RILEY, 46 After piling up o 20-I2 first period lead, the Bears looked like they were in for a good C TEAM bit of trouble as the Wildcats narrowed the margin down to 23-22 in the second quarter. However, the Bears recovered and increased the margin back to seven points as the half ended and the Bears led 35-28. In the last half, Cen- tral had it pretty much their own way as they got 44 points to the Wildcats' 18. High for Riley were Krider with I3 points and Hart- man with nine. Thus, the 1949-1950 version of the Riley basketball team ended its season with o nine won and twelve lost record. Back row, Iett to right: D. Nelson, imanugeri, Gordon Young, imanagerl, J. Often thought of as merely a winter program for football linemen, the wrestling squad also attracts boys in the lighter weight class. With Harry Woodard os coach, the Riley team spent most of the year learning the fundamentals of wrestling. lf the squad keeps up the spirit it showed this year, it can, with the necessary experience, emerge into a fine team.
