The hustling senior waited not long as halfback Art Derda's pass hit Comegys chest high for Riley's first score. Fullback Jim White broke the 7-7 tie and scored the game-winning touchdown to give Riley a 20-13 victory over the Linton Miners in the Wildcat's first grid game of 1946. A TALE OF 67 YARDS TRAVELED BY TOMPOS Game! Riley vs. Mishawaka. Scene: School Field. Score: 6-6. Time: Second quarter. The ball rests on Riley's 33-yard line. At this point quarterback Andy Tompos lines the Riley backfield into a short punt formation with himself in the tailback. Center Ken Smorin spirals to Tompos who is headed for the enemy right tackle and breaks through and reverses his field. Now he's doing a circus tight rope act down the sidelines. Next hels' outrunning the entire Mishawaka secondary and completes the 67-yard trip and Riley leads, 12-6, and goes on to a 18-6 victory. KRIDER SCORES-NO MORE Don Krider had to leap high to snag Art Derda's pass in the end zone, but Krider held on, after fall- ing down, and Riley led 6-0 in the first quarter. But that was the beginning and the end for the visitors as LaPorte scored twice in defeating Riley 13-6. FOUR MEN SCORE AS MANY TOUCHDOWNS Guard Mel Young fell on an Adam's fumble, and end Lonny Comegys raced around end a few plays later to score first for Riley. Three more touch- downs were in the rainy nightis ofling as the purple and gold scored 25 points to Adams' nothing. Art Derda, George Divijak, and Dick Turk, who went 71 yards, all tallied for the victors. A GAME AND A LETTER Riley whitewashed Sullivan of Chicago, 39-O, in barrage of touchdowns in which not only varsity men like White, Tompos, and Krider scored, but even B team player Roger Winter trotted into the end zone. A month later a letter from the Chicago coach was received by Coach Kelly. It read: We re- spect your ability to play good, clean, heads-up football. If you want us again next year, we promise you a better game? WELL SAID, MR. HAFRON. WELL SAID It was great, it was magnificent, courageous, and something that all Riley should be proud of. Our boys proved to themselves and to all that Washing- ton is not invulnerable or unbeatable. They are just another team like anyone else. They put their shoes on one foot at a time, just like our boys. The second half they realized that? This is the 13-12 upset victory over Washington summarized by Assistant Coach Charles Hafron, as eleven W'ildcats from the south side of South Bend had played the game of their career. EVERYBODY SCORES BUT TI-IE WATERBOY Almost everybody scored a touchdown except man- ager Tom Gurbick as Riley annihilated North Side of Fort WVayne, 39-0. Touchdowns were a dime a dozen, occuring as frequently as Kelley could substitute. A HEADLINE AND A STORY Riley's weekly paper, The Hi-Times, ran a head- line that screamed out, Michigan City Upsets Cats, 19-123, A four inch story followed describ- ing the local boys' second road-trip defeat in as many attempts. 70 YARDS wERE'NT ENOUGH After beating Riley, 25-6, Indiana sportswriters two days later ranked Central third best team in Indiana, but Riley's 6 points of the game rnerit telling. Fullback jim White intercepted a Bear pass on the foe's 30 and set sail for his goal line. White sprinted like a trackman and when reaching mid-field he waved good-by to his pursuersg then finished the 70 yard dramatic jaunt. TENTI-I GAME-SEVENTH VICTORY Andy Tompos scored his seventh touchdown of the season to nose out White's 36 points for high scoring honors, and Paul Frazier tallied his third touch- down of the campaign as Riley closed 1946 with a 19-0 win over Garfield of Terra Haute. x Q wg, 'ff Q11 6 D , X 'I' .g X!- izsgnlh A . LONG WINTER FORECASTED Senior jim lVelch collected more rebounds in this game than he did in any other battle of the season, but rebounds don't always pay off as Riley was defeated 40-18, by Washington, in the longest thirty-two minutes John Adams Auditorium wit- nessed all through 1946-47. The fans thought, If this keeps up it'll be a long winterf' XVELL, MAYBE NOT TOO LONG The South Bend Tribune quoted: 'iRiley out- fought, out-played, out-ball-hawked John Adams but didnit out-score the Eagles as they edged Riley, 33-29. Little Lora Overholser, a junior, fancied 13 points as fans anticipated his coming back in 1947-48. OH VICTORY, NVHERE ARE YOU? A HEROIC COMEBACK, BUT DEFEAT Peru led 33-16, in the third quarter, but Riley staged a spectacular comeback, tying the score at 33-33. Peru then said goodbye, going on to win, 43-39. The consolation game listed Riley and Frankfort. The Hotdogs won, 53-48, in an all-offense game, as defenses had been left behind in the dressing rooms. Tom Keiser collected 17 points for the losers and three Peruvians scored 44 points com- bined. JANUARY BRINGS 1947 AND TRIUMPH january ushered in a new year and Riley's second victory of the season, beating the Plymouth Rockies, 53-42. Cliff Foster gleamed with 13 points as the lVildcats made 25 markers in the last quarter. WIN FIRST OF FOUR CONFERENCE GAMES Conference games with Washington, Central, LaPorte and Elkhart were next on the almostwin- less Riley schedule, but the Cats surprised South Bend fans by winning the first, 36-35. RILEY 46, LAPORTE 45-A GAME TO REMEMBER If all records of this game are ever lost, the Riley- LaPorte contest ofjanuary 16, 1947, will never be forgotten by those who attended and played. Riley's seven-time defeated XVildcats upset the Slicers, who were co-leaders of the conference, 46-45, in one of the best played games John Adams Auditorium watched this season. BLUE BLAZERS BRAVE BLIZZARD- BEAT LOCAL BOYS Another one of those long evenings dragged through when Elkhart braved near freezing South Bend temperature and a blizzard to smother Riley, 48-29. Were these the same Wildcats that de- feated LaPorte? STOUT AND FOSTER LEAD FIFTH WVIN Bill Stout and Cliff Foster led Riley's 25 point fourth quarter drive to whip Culver, 56-46. Stout left the B team and gathered in ICD points in his varsity debut. nI'LL DO IT. SAYS CLIFF AND 20 POINTS Cliff Foster literally said, Let me do it boysf' as the big senior center heaved 20 points through the Goshen baskets to lead his team to a 43-37 con- ference win. HI-TIMES QUOTES DEFEAT The Riley Hi-Times commented, 'WVith six seconds left to play a Rochester Zebra hit the hoop for two points to give the Zebras a 41-40 victory, The XVildcats trudged to the showers with their ninth loss of the season as pandemonium reigned from the local fansf' OVERHOLSER AND HART STAR-BUT TO NO AVAIL Lora Overholser, Bob Hart and Cliff Foster did their best to carry Riley to its seventh triumph as the trio scored 32 of the Cats 44 points, but John Adams had looped one more point to win a 45-44 overtime thriller. CATS YVHIP CITY, 48-40, SLICERS LICK BEARS XVhile Riley was winning at Michigan City, 48-40, in nearby LaPorte the Slicers, defeated only by Riley in conference play, were unbelievingly shellacking Central, 60-36, who had won two scrim- mage sessions with the Wildcats, 57-22 and 42-24. We have left these familiar portals at the end of every day in the years that have past. As each day has gone gaily by, marking accomplish- ments and good times, we have gone step by step to the culmination of all these days-graduation, and the re- sponsibility to use all that we have learned in our day by day life at Riley. Ones' Senior year is ageless. Our school time is usually filled with many Senior events which make these last weeks and days before graduation fly with undreamed of speed. However, when the reality of receiv- ing a diploma approaches and the day finally arrives, each Senior will remem- ber and tenderly cherish the memories gathered together day by day in his life at Riley.fB.H. Our life at Riley began in September 1942. WVe were green 8B's then and we were a little awed by the big school. We enjoyed ,however, watching the football and basketball gamesg seeing the Drama Club Plays, and the revue, 4'From War to War , reading the Hz'-Tz'mex,' con- tributing to Riley's war effort, having our own Sth grade party, and as we became better acquainted with Riley's teachers and students we began to feel proud to be a part of Riley. As Freshmen, just as we had chosen the classes which would benefit us the most, so each of us entered the activi- ties for which he was best suited-Glee Club - Band - Orchestra - Sports - Drama H Debate - School Clubs - Hi-Times-Student Council. We con- tinued to buy War Stamps and Bonds, work on the Salvage Committee, and give generously to the jr. Red Cross. As Sophomores and Juniors our ever- growing class moved on in the work and fun at Riley. We helped give the revue Lys tj Rilqyl' and the plays Arms and lhe Man,l' Whiteheaded Boyf, We proudly followed our 1945 basketball team from the South Bend sectional and regionals to the Purdue semi-finals and then to Indianapolis for the state finals. As Seniors the classes and activities went on somewhat as usual, but for us there was a difference because we real- ized that this was the last-the last foot- ball game-Christmas Assembly-Seo tional-prom. There were special ac- tivities too-class meetings for election of officers-making appointments for senior pictures-january Commence- ment-Last Chance Dance-planning the Hoosier Poet-tryouts for the senior play Tobias and llze Angelw-awards assembly, where those who have ex- celled in scholarship and activities were especially recognized-the wonderful, wonderful promvthe senior issue of the Hi-Times-Cap and Gown Day- Senior Assembly-Baccalaureate-and the ending of our life at Riley, Com- mencement.-A.M.
