October I at 7:42 A.N. came as atl earthquakes occur-uncxpecledly. Students were arriving at school, some were on campus, most teachers were still checking in at the office and a few students and teachers were settled into their classrooms. Yoi most Monroe Students this was their first experience of what a big shaker ' feels like-seniors were only toddlers when the february 9. 1971 earthquake occurred in Sylmar. 1 1th graders were infants and most 10th graders were not even t orn. On that Thursday, so soon after school began, we witnessed the ground shak ing. trees swaying and windows rattling. Some of us hugged each other, some stood still in their tracks, and in a short time we all proceeded to the football Held as we were trained to do so many times in practiced drills. Days later we were all still talking about our experiences. Where were you? t ecame the popular question. EPIRIQUE BARILLAS DORIS BARILLAS . • - r!( taut I .. If you attempt this you are in for an unforgettable treat. The screeching of tires, the reving of engines, the various drag races in addition to the booming of stereos are only a few of the licensed drivers ' activities in the lot. Trying to find a spot is a different story all its own. Students take lap after lap to locate a spot near their friends, as well as a spot which is maneuverable to quickly remove oneself at 3:05. If and when you decide to enter into this ravenous jungle, wear your seat belt and be prepared to enter Monroe ' s Twiight Zone. We were to arrive at registration with our parents, wail outside A-IO for our meeting with Mr. Turner, and alas, we were eligible for a Senior lunch pass. Everyday, seniors from all over the school hurry to the parking lot. hoping to be the llrst to the fast food of their choice. As the 5lh period tardy bell rings, hundreds of seniors sit relieved in their classes, feeling the accomplishment of not being caught in the tardy sweep-with their lunch pass ready to be used again for the next day. This is true because of the easy requirements. You can have any grade point average, you don ' t need any references, and you can be any age. The only requirement is that you must be tardy. That ' s it. Then you, along with other lucky individuals will have the prestigous and glorifying job of campus beauti- „ fication. Not only can you help ' in making your school clean, and make a fool of yourself, but ' in edition to all that, you get to wear a gorgeous designer, 100% pure plastic smock, so all your friends can see you. This can be all yours for free. All you have to do is be tardy, and wel- come to the club! l -PETER PIRNEJAD iv DEBRAfl LAFIDY JOSH LAPiER CAMfUS BEAUTI FICATIOM LETICIA LAliGLEY SCOTT LAWREnCE c. t f cuono LE MAn LE DONG LEE JAniE LEE ti X jonn LEE LARRY LEtlMAnn CHUCK LEicnnER ,♦•«. I (truth) as in happy in a certain way: forming real opinions so that I mean just what I say, knowing within that everything will be okay, reaching all the goals that I set yesterday. J.Q. 166 Rainy Midnight In the rain I roam and wander. And from above, rolls the thunder. Tonight the darkness is strong and souled- 1 think of you and shed a single tear; The truth suddenly hits steady and hard. I ' m so far from you now, so far away- I still love you as much now as then. Yet in such different ways. I wish you ' d return to find me here On this secluded road. But we ' ve been separated for so long. What are you doing? Where are you now? Tonight you ' re on your own path. Travelling alone, destination unclear, in the rain that keep pouring, purling- And 1 tip my chin to the empty sky, falling. Calling out your name to the lonely night. And stare . And wonder . . . While from above, rolls the thunder. Jil Ackerman for Jay Hold on to Your Dreams Mold on to your dreams Don ' t ever give in. If you keep trying. You ' re going to win. You really pulled one over on me I thought you truly cared. As I though about loving you And all the times we shared. You would hold me in your arms and Then recite a song; I didn ' t know that you really Didn ' t love me all along. Every time I see you, I cry Because I can ' t forget. A picture of your face. In my mind is set. I hope you ' re happy with your new love But a picture of me will still remain, Because forever, you will have Left my heart in pain. And 1 hope she satisfies and truly Loves you. But just remember — No one will ever love you The way I Used to. Deanna Boyajian 167 The day is coming, it will soon be here. The day when we leave our friends so dear. ' f ' (f FAXCULTY 217 ADMINISTRATION Dr. John Anderson Principal Dear Vikings: As we transition through the 1987-88 school year, we will see a variety of activities take place involving our students and the faculty. I would hope that every Monroe student recognizes that the three years of high school are, for most, magic years that they never forget. Participating on an athletic team; be- ing a member or officer of an on-campus club; par- ticipating in special programs like our R.O.T.C, our Drill Team, or the Academic Decathlon Team; going to football games; being part of Senior activities are all experiences that present themselves once in a lifetime. I would hope that in the final months of your Senior year, you can look back over many mo- ments that you will cherish and value as you move into adulthood. Our Valhalla Yearbook is a record of these exper- iences. Its value to you many years from now will be priceless as you skip through the pages and see the faces of fellow students, favorite teachers, and once- close friends who have become fond memories of your past. ui OV-f r l 218 Lynettc Mains Assistant Principal Daryl Turner Assistant Principal Dr. Mary Ann Welborn Assistant Principal, Counseling Services Elmer Qarrett Administrative Dean FACULTY Reuben Allen Sylvia Anderson Elias Andrade Sam Anterasian Vivian Atkin Dean Balzarett John Barrett Surjit Bassi 219 Claudia Bennett Richard Bond Cliff Burems Kevin Campbell Thomas Chilton Don Chronister rtita Cosat Southern Courtney Connie Couture Sgt.
