Football This year our fantastie Varsity football team went to un- believable heights as they tied for the Mid-Valley League Championship with a win over Granada, and went on to the city playoffs. Being tagged the underdog in each game. our team pushed its way through the first three games eonquering Chatsworth. Fremont. and Bell. plac- ing Monroe as a contender in the last playoff game. Our team took seeond in the city in this final game against Carson. In doing this. the Varsity team has established a new precedent in being the first Viking team to make city playoffs. Some of the overpowering assets the team possessed this year were the passing-entehing eombination of Guy Ben- jamin and Steve Bergman. plus receivers Jack Ernst and co-captain Cary Bernardi. and the excellent protection by the offensive linemen. This, along with the superb de- fense performance of Dennis Shaw and Jim Sharp, the powerful and agile running of Mitch Drootin and Fernan- do Nunez, and the kicking of Brad Rice, all led to a suc- cessful year, Besides performing superbly as a team, this year there were many notable players who won recognition for their individual performances. Five Monroe players, Guy Ben- jamin. Dennis Shaw, Steve Bergman, Steve Krause, and Craig Hill made All City: these players, plus ,lim Sharp, Steve Haynes, Tom Porter, Mitch Drootin, and Fernando Nunez made All League. Two outstanding players who deserve mention are this years captains, Gary Bernardi and Dennis Shaw. ' its ' , t Y ' 1 I!
