The Medical Records class is one of the more exciting offerings for students inter- ested in entering the medical profession. Students received on the job practice in Medical Record Keeping at the Sepulveda Veteran's Hospital three days a week, while spending two days in class work and preparation. Introduction to Data Processing is another class which should certainly be mentioned as most relevant to those students who want to find out more about how computers and computer programming are reflected throughout their everyday life. It also contains re- cordings and filmstrips that help make the classes more in- teresting. In addition, the drama classes have developed a Children's Theater - students going to public libraries and grade schools to perform for the children. 'P- Nlr Charles Scott. Head Counselor. v a Mr. Ben Keeler and Miss Claire Wyckoff, 12th Grade Counselors C ,,,,,. .- -p 'N Mr. Eugene Friedman, and Mrs. Linda Johnson. Mrs. Linda Johnson, our Programming and Testing Counselor offered these thoughts: Tired of looking at the IBM optical scoring answer sheet? You can complain to the State legislature but it will probably be to no avail. The Califor- nia State legislature has specified that all students must demonstrate competence in reading and arithmetic on the Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills or take re- medial work. Twelfth graders in addition participated in four hours of achieve- ment and intelligence tests this year in an effort to evaluate just how well high school students are doing. If you haven't yet been tested, expect a sum- mons . . . Mr. Eugene Friedman, our College Advisor, explained that despite increasing college costs, the class of 1972 has more applicants for select selective private colleges and University of California campuses, both in percentage and in num- bers, than did the previous graduating class. Seniors did gallant and not-so-gal- lant battle with the complications of SAT, ACH, ACT, PCS, California State Col- lege, University of California, and University of California Financial Aid applica- tions, and, in its infinite complexity, the new Student Descriptive Questionnaire. The theory is, apparently, that anyone still functioning after a round of such stuff, is bona fide college material. However, there is no truth to the rumor that each college campus will have an application-shock ward in its medical center. YA Mr. Stephen Kleinberg and Mr. Gerrick Sharrigan, llth Grade Counselors. Apathy ran deep with much of the class and activi- ties had their short comings. Despite problems there were certain obscure seniors who merit recognition. No doubt Senior Activity Day would have fold- ed without the soprano olivegold voice of Michael Frankhuizen, or the paint brush of Bob Waskel. The Senior Bar-B-Q could not have succeeded, lacking the fine chairmanship and drive of Elayn Ward or the relentless push of Paula Rooney. By working in a system like that of our government, I came to better understand how a democracy functions. I also had a wonderful opportunity to exchange ideas and opinions with girls from all over the state. Most important, I met many new friends with whom I experienced the beauty of grow- ing and thc joy of sharing. -- Lisa Stelck Boys' State was an unforgettable experience in practical politics and working with other people in your age group with similar interests. We spent a week in Sacramento learning and then putting into practice the principles of a Democratic society. Boys' State becomes a miniature coun- try, as we were free to make our own laws and had our own political parties. I really enjoyed my stay at Boys' State, I just wish more people could have the same experience. - Gary Netzley Sandra Gronthom Michele Grossman Carol Grubbs Richard Gullixson Steve Gurner Bruce Gustafson Doreen Gustafson Julie Gustafson Herman Gutierrez Brian Gwaltney Loyd Haack Will Haack Eva Habalik Karen Hacker Dave Hagan Debra Hahnel Carol Haid Ken Haight Larry Haimoff Sue Hajek jeff Halaas Margaret Hall lan Halverson Debbie Hamlin Bill Hammond Wendy Hankison Debbie Hansen Debbie Harback Pamela Harback Jeff Harband David Hardisty Cary Hargesheimer Lisa Harlan Steve Harness Darlene Harper Paul Harris Valerie Harris Iles Harrison loan Hartnett David Harvey Dale Haskell Cheryl Hatfield Steven Haynes Lisa Heagy Kathy Heaven Kim Herle Sherie Heinsohn Dan Heiper Thomas Hemphill Judy Hedenlmerg Tim Henning Audien Henry Connie Herman Eva Hernandez Toni Hernandez Joanne Herald Rose Herrera Don Henman Micheal Higgines Craig Hill Seniors Duane Hill Mark Hilton Mark Hirsch Pam Houk Brent Hogue Kathy Holden Leslie Honig Madeleine Hoobs Nineen Honroth Rhonda Hoskins Yvonne Horisen Jeff Howard Vern Hudson James Hughes Douglas Hugo Leslie Hulbert Brent Hunter Crystal Hunter Sharon Huntley Kathy Hurst Jim Huse Linda Hutt Allen Hyam David Hylla Barbara Hynson Pete Ihnat Bruce Indermill Eric Indermill Richard Isted Gregory Jackson Dianne Jacnnclle John James James Janssen Carolann Jasaitis Miko Jay Stcvcn Jenkins Susan Jcnnrich Dave Jonson Douglas Jcsson Kevin Jessup Jane Jozicrski Dc-hbic Jimenez Dchhiv Jimenez Jeff Johnson Lisa Johnson Mvianio Johnson Patty Johnson Steve Johnson Susan Johnson Dvbra Jonvs Franvvs Jones Greg: Jonvs Juno! Football This year our fantastie Varsity football team went to un- believable heights as they tied for the Mid-Valley League Championship with a win over Granada, and went on to the city playoffs. Being tagged the underdog in each game. our team pushed its way through the first three games eonquering Chatsworth. Fremont. and Bell. plac- ing Monroe as a contender in the last playoff game. Our team took seeond in the city in this final game against Carson. In doing this. the Varsity team has established a new precedent in being the first Viking team to make city playoffs. Some of the overpowering assets the team possessed this year were the passing-entehing eombination of Guy Ben- jamin and Steve Bergman. plus receivers Jack Ernst and co-captain Cary Bernardi. and the excellent protection by the offensive linemen. This, along with the superb de- fense performance of Dennis Shaw and Jim Sharp, the powerful and agile running of Mitch Drootin and Fernan- do Nunez, and the kicking of Brad Rice, all led to a suc- cessful year, Besides performing superbly as a team, this year there were many notable players who won recognition for their individual performances. Five Monroe players, Guy Ben- jamin. Dennis Shaw, Steve Bergman, Steve Krause, and Craig Hill made All City: these players, plus ,lim Sharp, Steve Haynes, Tom Porter, Mitch Drootin, and Fernando Nunez made All League. Two outstanding players who deserve mention are this years captains, Gary Bernardi and Dennis Shaw. ' its ' , t Y ' 1 I! 5 'fs 2 1, 1, I ws 5 I, . Bee Football - T if ff- - fi 1455.---1, Fierce power and the desire to win, coupled with the superior g V N E T. skills of the entire team, led Monroe's Bee football team to 4 smashing victories over every opponent they played this year. The Bees emerged undefeated, boasting a perfect winning record 5.3, of 8-0. ,gif-w, Not satisfied with merely destroying their opposition, the defense proved their worth in making a record for the fewest points scored against them, allowing only a mere 12 points scored throughout the entire season. This asset along with a fantastic of- fense, led to the Viking's amazing victories. The offense, not to be outdone, broke the old record for total number of points for games with an astounding 158 points for five games. Seine of the many outstanding players on the team included Bob Slatter, player of the year, Russ Johnson as quarterback, and Ed Mclntosh as captain. The key offense was Tom Perkins, and the key defense player was Mark Orsino. Hmvf-ver, no matter how well each individual player was, nothing could have been accomplished without the dazzling teamwork and tremendous spirit the entire team displayed. The J.V.'s season was not particularly successfulg they placed in the bottom half of the league. We set our goals and went after them. We worked with beneficial possibilities, but trying to satisfy the second largest school in the United States l4,000 studentsl seemed al- most an impossibility. We wanted involvement, not just for involvement's sake, but for the sake of meaningful accomplishments. Basically, aside from all the tradition- al Activities - such as dances, Homecoming, and elec- tions, we strived to do more than just preserve the status quo. I feel this makes a Council, if you don't go the extra mile, and accomplish new and extra,' things, in reality, you've done nothing. A Student Council is only as strong-as the people behind it. I owe much to many people that really helped me, and stuck it out, and really worked on Council. You can't please every- body, it's sure true, but I gave it my all and I would like to thank the Monroe Student Body for their support, and for giving me a chance. Brent Hunter - - - ,. Media A new filmmaking class was born last year when Mrs. Hecht took a camera and two disenchanted Reading Im- provement students and began making films. The Con Game and Classes Interruptusw emerged from that eniperiment. The effort has now become institutional- ized in the Mass Media English class. This year the Industrial Occupational Class was in- volved with many new projects, including an every other daily newspaper, programs for sporting events, plays, and banquets. They also printed Confetti, Mon- roe's novelette, for the English Department. The Media Production class provided the technical skill required to run the video 'tape recording equipment purchases recently by the Monroe Student Body. This serviee was available to all departments and groups on eampus. Sound Crew worked out most of lVIonroe's technical problems. They helped at many of our football and bas- ketball games, and seemed to always be there when help was needed. Mass Media English Stage Crew L410 lo Right: Mrs. Elly Hecht. Phyllis Patterson.
