Mr. Otto Alexander Heinkel, head of the Math Department here at Monroe, is a native of Hollywood, California. He graduated from the University of California at Los Angeles with an A.B. degree in mathe- matics. He started his teaching career at La Mesa Junior High School in 1950, and then moved to Woodrow Wilson High School in Los An- geles, California. He has now been teaching for eight years. Mr. Heinkel is teaching math courses at Valley College. Last summer he was granted a scholarship from the University of California at Los Angeles. Mr. Heinkel has two hobbies: swimming and boxing. He has traveled to England, France, Belgium, Germany, Scotland, and New- foundland. Mr. Heinkel also sponsors the math club, and conducts an advanced math class for students before school. MR. ELMER SCHMIDT, Chairman SCIENCE Mr. Elmer Albert Schmidt was born in Chicago, Illinois. He spent two years attaining his A.A. degree at Los Angeles City College, cmd received his B.A. degree at the University of California at Los Angeles. He earned his M.S. degree at the University of Southern California. Upon his graduation in l952, he began teaching at Lompoc, California. His next employment as a teacher was at Hollywood High School. Mr. Schmidt has taught biology, physics, chemistry, biochemistry, physical science, life science I and ll, mod- ern science, and physiology. Of these subiects he prefers to teach physics and chemistry. His travels have extended over Europe, through the courtesy of the gov- ernment. A few years ago one of his students won first prize at the South- ern California Science Fair, which gave Mr. Schmidt the opportunity to travel to Cleveland, Ohio, as her sponsor. Mr. Schmidt lives in Sepulveda with his wife and four children. In his spare time he likes to play golf and bowl, though he likes most other sports. He also enioys activities with his family. Mr. Schmidt carries out the usual department head duties, and in addition sponsors the Rocket Club and is the coordinator of Service Clubs. mu-me-d i MR. PETER KANONCHOFF, Chairman Mr. Peter Kanonchoff was born in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, but has been in California since 1943. He enrolled in the University of Cali- fornia and received his Bachelor of Science, and his Masters' Degree in Education. Mr, Kanonchoff has taught math at Reseda High School, Los An- geles State College, and the University of Southern California, Here at Monroe, he teaches all types of business classes, and also office management. Two nights of the week he teaches a class in 3 office machines at Pierce Junior College. I Mr. Kanonchoff is also Coordinator of High School Drives and As- I semblies. His duties as coordinator are to supervise and direct school l functions. In his spare time he enioys photography, gardening, ham radio, building radio-controlled boats and planes. He and his wife are flying enthusiasts, also. While he was in the Army, Mr. Kanonchoff traveled widely. He has visited nearly every state in our Union, the Western Pacific, Australia, New Guinea, Guadalcanal, the Philippines, and Japan. In the future, he plans to visit Europe. The southern part of Italy was the birthplace of Mrs. Lee Velardi. At the age of nine, she and her family came to the United States. Mrs. Velardi attended the University at Akron, Ohio, where she received her Bachelor's degree in Spanish, and then attended the University of Michigan on a scholarship, where she obtained her Master's degree in Spanish. She also received a Master's degree in Italian at the University of Illinois, While completing her Master's degree in Italian, she taught Spanish at the college. Mrs. Velardi also taught at the College of Mount St. Joseph, which is a school for girls at Cincinnati, Ohio. She then, for two years, attended the Uni- versity of Mexico in Mexico City. Her next step in education was to complete her degree in Spanish and Italian. She started to work on her Ph.D. in Spanish, but got married before she completed it, Her husband is an assistant professor of art at San Fernando State College. During her spare time, Mrs. Velardi enjoys reading, and is a great aficionada of bullfighting. She also enioys outdoor sports of all kinds.
