ENGLISH Mr. Paul A. Faucett was born in Fresno, California, in 1924. He attended Los Angeles City College and the University of Southern California for a total of seven years, starting his teaching career directly upon leaving college. Mr. Faucett has taught at Coachella Union High School near Indio, California, at Sutter Junion High School in Canoga Park, and at Paul Revere Junior High School in Brentwood, California. His maior teaching fields include Social Studies and English, but here at Monroe, Mr. Faucett teaches only English. Mr. Faucett's schooling was interrupted for a period of two years by service in the Navy. ln the service, he was trained to be a malari- ologist, working in swamp areas of the Orient and the southern United States. During his duty in the service, and on his own, he has traveled widely throughout the United States, Hawaii, Shanghai, Tien- tsin, and in the Panama Canal Zone, Of the many places he visited, he was most impressed with Hawaii. During his spare time, Mr. Faucett enioys packing back into the Sierra Mountains and, to quote him, roughing it. As a hobby, he likes to observe people as an amateur psychologist. The future holds many exciting times for our English Department Chairman. ln September, he will embark on a sabbatical leave to Europe. Mr. Faucett plans on visiting as many countries as he can while he is abroad, and he also plans to further his education while he is in Europe. qi AGE AND OUR EDDA MR. MR. PHILLIP BROTHERTON, Chairman SOCIAL STUDIES Mr. Phillip E. Brotherton, born in Long Beach, California, on July 24, T91 8, now lives in our neighboring town of Northridge. Mr. Brotherton has attended the University of California at Los An- geles and the University of Southern California. He attended college from T936 to l94O, where he received a General Secondary Teaching Credential and a Bachelor of Arts degree. He then attended Graduate School, but was unable to get his Masters Degree at that time. He was drafted in T941 and was in the Army for a total of three years. He attained his Masters Degree after the war. Mr. Brotherton has taught at Belmont High School, Canoga Park High School, and San Fernando High School. Mr. Brotherton has taught iust about any class imaginable, from Social Studies and English to Math and even Language. Out of these many teaching fields, he enioys teaching Government and Political Science best, As for his future teaching career, Mr. Brotherton would like to teach at a Junior College. He has traveled extensively throu-gh the United States, our new state of Alaska, and our neighboring countries of Canada and Mexico. He was sent to Alaska by the Army as a member of the Military Intelligence. Out of all the places he has been, he says he would like to live in Northern California at the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. In the future, Mr. Brotherton plans to go on a sabbatical leave to Europe. MR. ELMER SCHMIDT, Chairman SCIENCE Mr. Elmer Albert Schmidt was born in Chicago, Illinois. He spent two years attaining his A.A. degree at Los Angeles City College, cmd received his B.A. degree at the University of California at Los Angeles. He earned his M.S. degree at the University of Southern California. Upon his graduation in l952, he began teaching at Lompoc, California. His next employment as a teacher was at Hollywood High School. Mr. Schmidt has taught biology, physics, chemistry, biochemistry, physical science, life science I and ll, mod- ern science, and physiology. Of these subiects he prefers to teach physics and chemistry. His travels have extended over Europe, through the courtesy of the gov- ernment. A few years ago one of his students won first prize at the South- ern California Science Fair, which gave Mr. Schmidt the opportunity to travel to Cleveland, Ohio, as her sponsor. Mr. Schmidt lives in Sepulveda with his wife and four children. In his spare time he likes to play golf and bowl, though he likes most other sports. He also enioys activities with his family. Mr. Schmidt carries out the usual department head duties, and in addition sponsors the Rocket Club and is the coordinator of Service Clubs.
