Bono or EaUCa1loN or THE Clrv DF NEW Volk MES MONROE HIGH SC N00 IQYNYON AVENUE IIONX. N. V. H1471 HOOL OSCAR oomalow Wmnu 34:00 mmap: June l965 Dear Friends : The inevitability of change is a social axlomg the adjustment to change is a social necessity. All we need do is look about us to see the multiple wonders that are the constant creation of man's genius. All we must do is realize how much this procession of wonders ccnanands conatant change in our ways of living, ln our patterns of thinking. Adjustment to modernization inconveniences and expectations of beneficial changes ere a current experience for us at James Monroe. The impact of renovation is so profound that it has inspired our Monrovian theme. In our local, national, and international community, the insistence for social change is so great that wisdom and statesman- ship are essential to determine when to analyze and evaluate and when to act. It is the wise statesman who can recognize justifiable demands and can lead in their successful adoption. It is the wise citizen who can discard accepted practices and accustomed judgments and acknowledge new attitudes and readjusted ideas. To favor reasoned change as a way of life is to avoid the agony of social conflict and crisis. However, we must resist change that threatens to compromise our democratic ideals and ethical principles. The inalienable rights of man venerated in the Declaration of Independence and guaranteed in our Constitution are the foundation of our society. These immutable rights and inescapable responsibilities have been the brick and mortar that have structured our great nation. To tamper with them is to under mine the spirit, the promise, and the glory that is America. Yes, change is a necessity, modernization and readjustment are the evidence of change: but ideals and principles dare not be sacrificed to change. You, as citizens, must adjust your thinking and your reactions to these fundamentals of democratic living if our nation is to con- tinue to flourish. RENAISSANCE 1a ef.. I vi We won't be here when the wires are tucked back into the walls and the water fountains spout again, when the kitchen is unveiled and the clocks all tell the same time, when fluorescent lights shine upon a refurbished, re- furnished, refinished James Monroe High School. No, we won't be here when . . . but we certainly were here during! The sign outside the school building calls our renovation a moderniza- tion. To us, however, renovation is the rat-a-tat of a jackhammer competing with typing, the shower of plaster coating our history notes, the murmur of the P.A. system pleading during math . . . Renovation is the turning into a plastered wall, the Monroe Mirror Office turning into a men's rest room, and the school turning into a disaster area. The ancient Egyptian technique of designing and planning out a struc- ture on paper before building it is taught in modern mechanical drawing rooms iust rebuilt for the art department. Conversely, optical art fpaintings that dazzle the eyej and composite sculpture, an innovation in the arts, are being taught in pre-renovated art rooms. And in an up-to-date music suite, the classical quartets of Beethoven and the jazz quartets of Brubeck bounce boldly off an acoustical ceiling. The principles of gravity and nuclear fission, the research of Galileo and Einstein, and the vision of Mendel and Darwin command equally the atten- tion of young students of the sciences for whom Monroe is now equipping a special wing where the yet-to-be-discovered may be sought. Similarly in social studies the past provides the basis for the present and the key to the future. In our classrooms, history reaches from Sparta to Selma, from feudalism to freedom, from Magna Carta to Atlantic Charter, from James Monroe to James Monroe. The by-words of today's business world are speed, accuracy, and competence. So, too, in secretarial studies classrooms. There, Egyptian word- pictures, hieroglyphics, find kinship with stenography, the modern language of symbols. Steno, however, reflects the rapid pace at which twentieth-century America moves, and as we fly at heretofore undreamed of speeds, so the stenography student's pen advances across her pad and the typist's fingers fly across the keys. All of the foregoing aspects of Monroe's curriculum reflect a deep concern for the mind. Each day, however, in our gymnasiums, on our fields, in our pool, a very old concept is renewed: a sound mind within a sound body. And so both health education departments provide a varied program designed to develop physically fit, mentally alert young men and women. The past is history. The present is recorded above. The future waits. 'i -I 2121- me fl M 1:11?44i-if :ga :r:.:.ffi 9212. :t.'IW::Y.1: t 1 ' 'rr :t'O'9'! ' t'? 't1r9tint-'O'i'i5taA'?'4 f.fTZf': Hifi? The health education department fielded eleven teams, football, baseball, basketball, swimming, track, bowling, cross country, tennis, handball, golf, and soccer, all of which-exhibited fine sportsmanship and team play throughout their respective seasons. Topping all, of course, was the performance of the football team. Coached by Mr. Len Wechter, the gridders broke a four-year, 28-game losing streak and wound up the season with a 4-3-'I won-lost record. Outstanding players for the squad were Tony Pandolfo, Joe Sweatt, Mickey DeVivo, John Clohessy, Hector Acevedo, and Jeff Glassroth. These stars, coupled with the rest ofthe squad, held Clinton scoreless in the first half of the traditional Thanksgiving encounter, only to be overpowered by the Governors in the final two periods. We Monrovians like to remember the first half, which represented the fight and drive dis- played by the gridders all season. The swimming team, under the guidance of Coach Bob Bazzini, finished the season with a 4-4 won-lost record. The squad consisted mainly of lower classman, with sophomore Ed Rothstein pacing the team and seniors Marc Silverman, Lloyd Friedman, Ben Brody, and Ken Grabowski contributing greatly. One of Monroe's perennial Bronx champs was the bowling squad, this year dethroned by Columbus, who went on to the city crown. Coach Mike Sandman had an inexperienced team to work with, but did a fine iob of organizing the boys. Captain Richie Lowenstein and Howie Rindner were the team's top performers, both averaging over 183, but they received a lot of help from Bob Simon, Mark Shikowitz, Paul Blankfeld, Doug Gribin, and Steve Fink, all seniors. The keglers wound up in second place, with an 8-2 record. The cross-country squad, under the tutelage of Mr. Thomas Mulkeen, found that the competition was extremely tough. Greg Jones was the best man, but he was closely followed by Mark Bowin, John Talavera, and Mel Castro, all seniors. The track team had a poor in- door season, due to lack of facilities, but such runners as hurdler Tom Harris and midclle-dis- tance man Wilfred Falu shone. According to Coach John Jangl, we should look for a strong team to represent us in the outdoor season because of such runners as Larry Mitchell, Nelson Morrison, Frank Youngstein, and Howie Herrnstadt, in addition to those mentioned above. JXVNJL Lf v, '2' 'OA f ' F1 HAM QM' A ' of . ':! x P l 79 1 , -fr? 'Q' bf VJ I ' A X, 1 , r . in The pride of Monroe is, of course, the baseball team. Their hopes lie with the bat of Sal Cannizzaro and the pitching arms of Bob Crosby and Shatty Jones. Sal was all-city first team last season as a iunior and is a sure repeater. Bob, in his two seasons as an Eagle hurler, has a 17-3 won-lost record and two of those three losses were handed to him by the PSAL City Champions of that year. Shotty , a junior, has never met defeat and hopes to continue his perfect record through this season. Coach Joe Con- sagra says the main competition for the coveted Bronx title will come from the Explorers of Columbus, and he sees Stephen Mazza, Ivan Miranda, Billy Mercado, Melvin Small, Vinnie D'Amica, Rolan- do Rivera, and Marco Macaluso as strong support for the big three. Tennis, golf, and handball, all spring sports, were depleted because of graduation. They also are teams made up predomi- nately of lower classman. Richy Brecher will lead the tennis squad, Ed Kahn will top the golf team, and Allen Gendler will head the wallmen. The latter team is hoping to regain the title they lost last season. 5.1-., mgifwr .,5.r. as 5.3.3. .vis ,..s.., co naman!! u on ,.,,f.,fr a 6 0 f,le u so 3550 s 5 Bill Mercado, centerfielder I 'Q ' 5 I I ,v-ss I ss' , 'I I S so V Bob Crosby, mound ace Baseball I I I QQ ' Q is Q S I 5 0 ' I an BASEBALL SENIORS - left to right: Bill Mercado, Bob Crosby, Ivan Miranda, Sieve Mazza. SENIOR LOG We waited two years to become the greatest senior class Monroe had ever seen. The year opened in September and to our surprise things weren't very ditterent from our iunior year. lt was program cards, delaney cards, guidance counseling sessions and still more delaney cards. Then at last it happened: something to break the monotony. Signs and posters began springing up all around the school. LBJ tor President . . . Helene for advertising manager . . . lt was time for senior elections . . . Things went back to normal: homework, tests, and boredom. Suddenly there were whispers in the halls. Something was brewing. Excitement grew as the announcement was made that there would be a ball to crown senior celebrities. The night grew near and everyone was tense. The voice spoke, The nominees are . . . The WINNER is . . . Your appointment for graduation pictures is October 23 . . . Tie? On! Sport jacket in hand, we set out for Delma, hoping to make it downtown in one piece. It rained that day . . . A few days later, breakfast at Monroe, dinner at the Latin Quarter . . . Students raced through the halls-yearbook deadline was close. The staff, half- hysterical, half-exhausted, worked into the 17th period of the afternoon. Remember the editor-in-ohief? Yeah? Russian roulette! . . . lt was Boomin' Baretz, Set-shot Sam, Murderous Mulkeen and the rest of the boys against Us, the Greatest! All of us knew the seniors would show those teachers that basketball is a game for youth. We lost . . . March-and we began sharpening the blades on our ice skates. Ouch, my tinger! . . . The days passed slowly until the day of the Bear Mountain trip. The best part was the back of the bus ride. Nearly drove the driver crazy. Did you say nearly? . . . Blues, greens, yellows for the others. For the Greatest-red! We strutted around the school wearing our senior hats and pins. This was our day, Senior Day!
