EDITORIAL If is good fhaf fhe fradifion is fhaf seniors should have more fun in school fhan fhey have ever had before, indulging in more enferfainmenf, adopfing foolish privileges for fhemselves and so on. If is good because being graduafed is such a sad fhing and if is good fo forgef sad fhings. Graduafion is sad because if is an ending. If is fhe ending of a beaufiful, excif- ing, naively blind period in one's life. Some say fhaf fhe sevenfh ferm is fhe besf because if is fhen fhaf fhe sfudenf has gained fhe presfige fhaf fhree years of high school experience can bring: yef, he can sfill look forward fo new experiences, new goals fo sfrive for. Buf fhe eighfh ferm is fhe end. There is no looking forward. The graduafe remains sfanding wifh his hands hanging af his sides. To be graduafed is fo be demofed. Graduafion is one of fhe climaxes of life, and everyone knows fhaf affer a climax comes a sharp descenf. affer which fhe climb musf recommence. The graduafe becomes a freshman. Whefher if be in college or in indusfry, he is only a beginner. The graduafe can no longer keep up fhe friendships he made in school by merely making such vague appoinfmenfs as, l'll see you in school. Those friend- ships can no longer be kepf by mere nods or hand-waves passed along as sfudenfs walk fhrough 'rhe corridors befween periods. Ouf of school, 'rhe word friend fakes on a new meaning. Acquainfanceships musf be kepf up wifh formal appoinfmenfs, formal correspondence. Thaf is why fhe graduafe is sad. He knows fhaf he may never again see so many hundreds of fhose familiar faces. If is good fhaf fhe senior ferm is one of revelry.
