Whaf can l do buf exhorf you fo puf your counfry firsf and fhaf means puffing your neighbor firsf and fhaf, in furn, means puffing everyone buf yourself firsf. Keep your body fif, for your counI'ry's sake. Keep your mind schooled, fhaf means disciplined, for your counfry's sake. Keep your morale, for your counfry's sake. Prevenf wasfe, for your counfry's sake. Save in sfamps and bonds, for your counfry's sake. l like fo believe fhaf many of you keep fhese yearbooks as reminders of your high school days. Thaf is why l have always fried fo make fhese messages carry over for lafer years, foo. Thaf is frue now. MARTIN WILSON Teacher in Charge, Evening High School I O 5 ! -A5 MR. MARTIN J. GREHAN Dean of Boys ,f I EDITORIAL If is good fhaf fhe fradifion is fhaf seniors should have more fun in school fhan fhey have ever had before, indulging in more enferfainmenf, adopfing foolish privileges for fhemselves and so on. If is good because being graduafed is such a sad fhing and if is good fo forgef sad fhings. Graduafion is sad because if is an ending. If is fhe ending of a beaufiful, excif- ing, naively blind period in one's life. Some say fhaf fhe sevenfh ferm is fhe besf because if is fhen fhaf fhe sfudenf has gained fhe presfige fhaf fhree years of high school experience can bring: yef, he can sfill look forward fo new experiences, new goals fo sfrive for. Buf fhe eighfh ferm is fhe end. There is no looking forward. The graduafe remains sfanding wifh his hands hanging af his sides. To be graduafed is fo be demofed. Graduafion is one of fhe climaxes of life, and everyone knows fhaf affer a climax comes a sharp descenf. affer which fhe climb musf recommence. The graduafe becomes a freshman. Whefher if be in college or in indusfry, he is only a beginner. The graduafe can no longer keep up fhe friendships he made in school by merely making such vague appoinfmenfs as, l'll see you in school. Those friend- ships can no longer be kepf by mere nods or hand-waves passed along as sfudenfs walk fhrough 'rhe corridors befween periods. Ouf of school, 'rhe word friend fakes on a new meaning. Acquainfanceships musf be kepf up wifh formal appoinfmenfs, formal correspondence. Thaf is why fhe graduafe is sad. He knows fhaf he may never again see so many hundreds of fhose familiar faces. If is good fhaf fhe senior ferm is one of revelry. WhaT game? You remember, your TirsT aThleTic conTesT as a Monrovian. l'll never TorgeT iT. The opening play oT The opening game of The opening of our high school days! We reTurned ThaT opening kick-oTT Tor a Touchdown. The game, however. ended in a Tie, RoosevelT 7. Monroe 7. We losT Tour games aTTer This one, going inTo The annual game againsT an undeTeaTed ClinTon Team, very much oT an underdog. ThaT same year, I938, The soccer Team losT To STuyvesanT in The Bronx-ManhaTTan play-OTT. The baskeTball Team Tinished a Tew noTches ouT oT TirsT place, and The baseball Team could do no beTTer Than The resT oT The boys. Things began To pick up Tor The class oT June '42 when we were sophs. There was a liTTle improvemenT in TooTball. We losT every oTher game. We beaT RoosevelT and Commerce, losT To Seward, Evander and Tilden. The soccer Team came Through Though, wiTh The TirsT oT whaT should have been Three ciTy championships as Mon- rovians la record Tor any classl, The SalTamen winning Their sevenTh TiTle wiTh com- paraTive ease. The baske+baIl Team finished a close Third, RoosevelT scoring Two poinTs wiTh abouT ThirTy seconds leTT To play in The lasT game oT The year. The base- ball Team almosT made iT a double in ciTy championship Teams when iT worked iTs way inTo The Tinals. IT losT There To a hard-hiTTing Abraham Lincoln aggregaTion. We really wenT To Town as juniors. ATTer seeing The TooTball Team in acTion, Monroe buTTons were Taken ouT of The dusT and really shined up. Doc Weidman's boys, aTTer dropping The TirsT game To a greaT Flushing ouTTiT lundeTeaTed ThaT yearl, slaughTered a high and mighTy Evander iuggernauT l7-6l, Then beaT Seward, RoosevelT. Commerce and STuyvesanT, Tinishing The remainder oT The campaign undeTeaTed. The Crimson booTers kicked Their way inTo The Tinals, only To Tind Themselves robbed oT The crown. Because oT The charges of semi-pro ball players lThey played on Sundaysl on mosT of The Teams of The P.S.A.L., The Tinals were called OTT, Thus sparing The pride and digniTy of a Tew Manual boys. Enough of This small Try ! Now we've reached our senior year. The pigskin warriors picked up where They had leTT oTT before. They had a Tive game winning sTreak behind Them, and They Tore up The gridiron preserving iT. We beaT Flushing in The opener To make iT 6. Seward generously made iT 7. NOT To be ouTdone by lasT year's rouT of Evander, we did iT again, This Time 2-O. ClinTon made iT 9 sTraighT aTTer a TighT sTruggle. BuT old man hard luck was on our heels once again. A broken-down, under-nourished STuyvesanT eleven beaT us on a lucky pass which ended our winning sTreak and undid our undeTeaTed season. Their eighTh ciTy TiTle was Tacked up by The hard-hiTTing sTudenTs oT SalTalogy. This Time we had To share The laurels wiTh LaTayeTTe, aTTer a scoreless deadlock in The final round, which was played in sub-freezing weaTher. There are a Tew June '42 boys sporTing ThaT ciTy-champ sweaTer. NexT Tall The old masTer will have To geT along wiThouT Boris Becker, Georgie SchechTman, MorT Kah, MarTin Zieg, Sam Green- 94 SPCDRTS baum and manager Irwin Lessy. The class oT '43 doesn'T have To worry Though: I guaranTee Them a good Team as long as J. S. is sTiII coaching. Now Tor The climax, and a TiTTing one, Too. The '4I-'42 baske+baII Team, and, in my opinion, one of The greaTesT, if noT The greaTesT Team puT ouT by The Crimson and Gold. The Eagles sTormed all over The opposiTion This season, and I mean sTormed. The highesT scoring high school Team in The CiTy oT New York, undeTeaTed in every P.S.A.L. game, They slaughfered eighT oTher quinTeTs iusT Tor The Tun oT iT. Benjamin Franklin High School, ciTy rulers Tour Times in The IasT Tive years, winner of eighTy-one QT Their IasT eighT-Tour games, had The bad luck To run inTo The Tlying eagles in The quarTer-Tinal round aT Madison Square Garden. Monroe wenT home wiTh TorTy-Three ouT oT The sevenTy-nine poinTs scored in The game. One week aTTer This encounTer, a scrappy Erasmus Team Iwhich we beaT by some ThirTy poinTs in a scrimmagel caughT us on an oTF-day and eked ouT a Three poinT vicTory. We don'T know how he's going To do iT, buT nexT year Coach DicksTein will be minus The services oT Three varsiTy men and The guiding IighT oT The Team. LiTTIe Lionel Malamed, Big Marv Haspil and Syd Lew are The sTarTing men geTTing Their diplomas.
