HEIN'S MESSRGE OFFICE OF THE PRINCIPAL Graduafion Time, January I94I Dear Friends, You are leaving us To learn more abouT life in business or in college. Your eyes are peering inTo The fufure, your hearf beaTs a liTTle fasTer as you prepare To sTep inTo The unknown. How glorious To be young and To look expecTanTly ahead! Buf, for iusT a momenT. look backward over The years spenf here. WhaT sTands ouT in The panorama of your school life? If your mernory's eye is normal, iT will be The democraTic way of life you have been permiTTed To live. I-las one of you been singled ouT for This, or reiecTed for Thaf, because of your race? Your creed? Your color? Your faTher's bank accounf? Your moTher's educaTion? Your grandfaTher's occupafion? Has one of you been subiecTed To regulaTions made for any oTher purpose Than The welfare of all? I-lere, indeed, you have had an oppor- TuniTy To live in a communiTy paTTerned on The ideals hoped for by The founders of our way of life. IT has been such a common, everyday experience for you, ThaT some of you may no longer give iT ThoughT, buT accepf iT as if iT could noT be ofherwise. BuT, look across The sea! IT can be ofherwisel LisTen To our FascisT-Nazi-Com- munisT pleaders here. Observe Their acfions. Yes, They would have iT ofherwise. Go ouT, Then, inTo The fufure, defermined To preserve for yourselves, and for The Thousands who will Take your places here, ThaT same democrafic way of life. Be sTrong in ThaT faiTh and make your mind and body sfrong To defend ThaT faiTh. Do your share as man and woman To show ThaT The democraTic way of life is noT a selfish way of life ThaT crumbles aT The firsf aTTack, buT ThaT iT is a sfrong way of life ThaT inspires sacrifice, ThaT is worTh dying for because iT is The only way worTh living. Young America, The American way of life is enTrusTed To you. Be worThy of The TrusT. r Principal Q 'IW 1 had M x,,,.,,.x ws., ,Henry .JL1lefn, larincilya MR. ISRAEL APPELL MISS SARAH BERENSON Adminisfrafive Assisfard Chairman, Grade Advisers MISS ANNA D. CASHEN MR. CHARLES SCHERZINGER Dean of Girls Dean of Boys EDITCDRI7-YL-..- In fhe beginning of February, I937, fhere sfrode fhrough fhe magnificenfly appoinfed main corridors of James Monroe l-ligh School a confidenf, albeif bewildered group of youngsfers-fhe Class of '4l. They were fo have been fhe hope of fhis generafion. for wide-reaching social reforms had been legislafedq fhe Unifed Sfafes was em- barking upon a period of prosperify: fhe world was af peace, save fhe localized Span- ish sifuafiong civilizafion was climbing onward fo greafer heighfs: fhings looked greaf for us,-fhe dull and desolafe youfh of foday. The affifude of confidence has been swepf away wifh sickening speed. We find ourselves on fhe very fhreshold of a war forn world, a world which has gone over fo fhe docfrine of mighf makes righf, a world where priceless masferpieces produced by fhis civilizafion are being desfroyed by bombs, a world in which human beings are forced fo flee underground like animals fo avoid fhe deafh from fhe skies, a world where a democrafic nafion is a novelfy. The Class of '4I fervenfly fhenks God for preserving fhe Unifed Sfafes as a democracy, where fhe people are guarded from fofalifarianism by a Consfifufion and a Bill of Righfs. We musf now dedicafe ourselves, everyone of us, fo fhe fask of being a cifizen of whom our counfry can be proud. The firsf sfep fowards fhis is fhe acquisi- fion of a self-safisfacfory economic posifion. In fhe world of foday, where compefifion is so very keen in fhe common labor marf, would if nof be wiser fo embark upon a career of specializafion? Of course,-as any haphazard perusal of fhe wanf ads will sfrongly bear ouf. There is greaf demand for skilled laborers, such as fhe fool makers, mechanics, chemical engineers, efc., men who are experfs in fheir own field. lf is frue fhaf in James Monroe you haven'f learned fhe above, buf fhe ancienf adage, Where fhere's a will, fhere's a way sfill holds frue. Federal schools are open in almosf any field, where a wise person may be educafed fo become a specialisf. If you sef your obiecfive, and fake advanfage of fhe various honesf means of gaining if, you can hardly fail fo be financially successful. Our Presidenf has sfafed fhaf we are going fo face difficulf fimes in fhe fufurep fimes in which loyalfy fo our way of living is going fo be puf under severe sfress. lf is fherefore necessary fo find a cerfain code of high ideals, and Then sef abouf living up fo fhem. ln parfing, if is my infenfion fo convey fo you a fond fare- well, coupled wifh fhe besf of luck. BuT in our young lives, we seldom realize The Trufh and graviTy of Those words. Four years seem like an eTerniTy, buf in realiTy, we find They are liTTle more Than an incidenf-a delighfful chapTer. To many of us, while Those four years were in The making, Their gaiefy seemed dimin- ished by slighT grievances. i However, looking back upon ThaT period, we find ThaT iT was more joyful Than iT appears To have been. When leaving all This behind us, and crossing The Threshold To more serious maTTers, we will recall Those carefree days and noTe wiTh regreT The speed wiTh which They passed. Many of us realize how much we have mafured while in high school. Many may Think Thaf There is very liTTle Thaf They have noT yef experienced. No doubT, many will leave James Monroe eagerly looking forward To Their debuf in The more complex world. LiTTle do They realize, however, whaT They are leaving and for whaT fuTure They are desfined. For Those who confinue To college or oTher educafional cenfers, There will be few major changes save Those of meefing and making new friends. BuT Those who enTer inTo business, will be compelled To shed Their youfhful, careless ways and don The cloak of responsibiliTy. All of us now enTering an inflamed and angry world, will see, as Though for The firsf Time, how biTTer and uncompromising The world can be. LeT us, Therefore, noTe wiTh concern whaT we are leaving. LeT us noT bid a care- less goodbye To all our cherished memories. LeT us raTher sTore Those memories. There undoubTedly will be occasion To refer To Them. LeT us keep Them in order. Coming Trom The gridiron, The soccer Tield, The cinder Track, The swimming pool, and The Tennis courT, These boys will long be remembered by Their perTormances. A number oT boys who will no longer be able To give Their services To The Crimson and Gold cause are Iisfed below. FirsT, Oscar Sheiner, a Triple-ThreaT backTield man oT The TooTball Team who showed greaT abiliTy ThroughouT The season, is graduaTing. His excellenT showing had puT him in The running Tor all-scholasTic honors. Dom Di Lorenzo, anoTher back- Tield man who carried The ball Tor Monroe many Times in The Special Delivery STyle, will also be on The promoTion lisT. LiTTle l-lowie Wax and speed demon RoberT O'Brien will also say so long To Monroe. O'Brien sTarTed The season on The line and Tinished up in The backTield. From The line, old man graduaTion will Take CapTain Henry l-label, The end who was chosen All-Bronx lasT year and who should be menTioned in The all-scholasTic nominaTions This year. l-label's play was brillianT Tor Monroe every minuTe ThaT he was in There TighTing Tor The Crimson and Gold. Joseph Krinsky and Paul Kopeck, Two boys who were boTh TighTing Tor The TirsT sTring Tackle assignmenT, are boTh leaving. Mel Tannenbaum, The liTTle guard who always seemed To be around whenever any Team Tumbled To recover The ball, has also played his lasT game Tor Monroe. John Gorga, a veTeran oT Two campaigns, and STanley BareTz, The righT end oT The Team, will no longer be available Tor Monroe. Some oT The men on The Team who did noT see much acTion include Seymour PTeTTer, Abe Glazer, Bernard Glickenhaus, Seymour Lesser, Simon SchaTTel and Harold SchildkrauT. A TerriTic loss Tor Doc Weidman will be The deparTure oT Dan l-lyman and Johnnie Nilan, Two swell managers of The Team who TulTilled Their duTies and obligaTions wiTh Tlying colors. IT was a pleasure To come in conTacT wiTh These Two swell Tellows boTh on and oTT The Tield. As The book goes To press, we are happy To relaTe ThaT Monroe has won The Bronx-ManhaTTan FooTball Championship. ATTer having losT our TirsT game To Flushing, The Then seasoned Team wenT on To vicTories over our TradiTional rival, Evander Childs. ATTer ThaT came successive vicTories over Commerce, RoosevelT, Seward Park and STuyvesanT. Once again graduaTion will cause anoTher name To be added To The long lisT of greaT aThleTes who have carved ouTsTanding careers Tor Themselves during Their sTay aT Monroe. ATTer compleTing Three years oT ouTsTanding service To The Soccer Team, Manny Carbaial will graduaTe leaving behind him one oT The besT records since The school opened in l925. AlThough he appeared To be handicapped aT TirsT by his exTremely small size and weighT, Manny Tooled every one and de- veloped inTo one oT The TinesT Torwards who ever wore a soccer uniTorm Tor Monroe. AT The Time ThaT This maTerial is being prepared Tor publicaTion, Manny is The highesT scorer in The ciTy. l-le should walk away wiTh all-scholasTic honors. The only oTher person on The Team who is graduaTing is Eli Breger. Eli has been on The Team Tor Three years and his services have been helpTul To The Monroe cause. We are also proud To relaTe ThaT Mr. SalTa and The Team have kepT up Their Tine record by again enTering The ciTy soccer Tinals. The Track Team will also suTTer because oT graduaTion. Five men have run Their lasT mile Tor Monroe. The real loss To The Track Team lies in The graduaTion of l-lenry EckerT. l-lenry did noT run This year because he was ineligible, buT in The Three and one halT years ThaT he did run, he Turned in many sparkling perTormances Tor Monroe. ln I938, l-lenry was crowned The Bronx half-mile champ, and in l939, he received The Bronx cross-counTry TiTle. Henry capTured The IOOO yard run in The Bronx in l94O, and Teaming up wiTh a Tellow named Frank Dixon, he placed second in The relay Team aT The Penn. Relay TournamenT.
