But I found that all that I could see Vvfas the echo of a pretty face That follows me throughout all times, That prods me while in hed I lie And pains me till I yearn to dieg to die, Oh God, there is no pain so great As that which comes to a man in love Who will not bow to fateg to fate, LEONARD E. JAMES MONROE HlGH SCHOOL Ellie Hreaihrni Svpeailm ' a O ' ' li W . fi ll li L si H OT many days remain until we shall make the final rounds . iff ll ' of the building, bidding goodbye to old familiar places L -sl.. - 5 d faces. l lf 'f ll. an -I At this time, it is customary to recall sentimentally J A ' I A the laughter and tears of the last four years andggive voice ' ll ' ' to heartfelt regret at parting with the people and the things we have learned to love and value. ln the tradition of departing sons and daughters, we should step through the door with a sigh and a bow- ed head. Let's not. It is silly to think that when we go, we shall leave behind all we have learned to cherish. On the contrary, everything of value to us, everything we have taken to ourselves as being worth while, will endure and prosper with the passage of time. True friendship cannot wane merely because paths are no longer parallel. Knowledge does not fall into decay, Happiness becomes nothing less because it has beeng lived through. These things we shall take away with us and carry through life with us for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health. Then, all precedents to the contrary notwithstanding, let us graduate not with hymns of sad farewell but rather songs of happy thanksgiving. When the doors close behind the class of February '29 for the last time, let us go forth with light heiarts and laughing lips because we have faith that whatever Monroe has given to us, will survive the great trial of all Man's works ..... the acid test of Time. JM ff mga, Senior Class-Twenty-three

JAMES MONROE HIGH SCHOOL Ellie Sveninr lirnmenahe Lg, - g-E HE Prom had been our star for months. We could hardly ' believe that January Pourth had come! It was only our fear of being too early for a dramatic entrance, that kept us from hurrying down-town the day before. As we drew up to the Hotel Pennsylvania, we saw other couples that we knew, ascending the steps to the lobby. M In the confusion of removing our wraps, and powdering our noses, we noticed little else, until we reached the grand ballroom, Woman- like, we delighted in seeing the beautiful splashes of color the girls made against the black and white tuxedoes of their escorts. The green palms helped to give an impression of people in a well-known world. The splendid playing of the band, the dancers on the floor, and those talking in the fringes of the ballroom were facets in one great diamond of gayety. Crowds drifted inf and out during the evening. Everyone seemed to know everyone else, and was glad of the fact. . . ll!! ! l i l At one o'clock the Senior Class President led the Senior Promenade. Our throat felt as though we could never keep our sadness down. Our eyes were very shining and proud, We felt as though we were ages olderg as though we had undergone all the experiences known to man. And then the Prom was over. Groups separated as they left the hotel, and went the way of every crowd: to dine, and to dance again. We waited awhile, and saw some leave. Then we too departed. Another page had turned in the history of our class. Edna Janice Guttag Senior Class-Twenty-five
