BOARD OF EDUCATION CITY OF NEW YORK JAMES MONROE HIGH SCHOOL 172nd-Boynton Avenue' Bronx' Borough Ofiice of the Principal Graduation Time January, 1929 My Dear Friends: ' Play fair and hit the line hard, sums up a recent presidentvs appeal to the youth of America. In these last words of mine to you, I want to impress the idea behind that stirring message indelibly upon your minds. Play fair! A concise way of saying-what all the wise men of the past have told us. From Confucius to the Prophets, from Marcus Aurelius to the Christ, there has come, ripened through the ages, the fruit of experi- ence--Happiness is yours as you promote it in your neighbor. Yes, my boys and girls, Play Fair and it will be fair with you. Hit the line hard! Give of your best to the last ounce of your strength. Do not spare yourself. What seek you--Wealth? How easily it is lost. Ease? What assurance have you of its permanence? Honors? They are much more easily stripped from you than won. One thing only do I know that is worth having and which, gained. cannot be taken from you. And that is the contentment that is ours when we do each task that it is your BEST. You must heed that inner voice whose softest whisper can- not be shouted down, that is our truest judge. Content- ment, of the kind I mean,-it is the only happiness that cannot cloy. It is the goal that the finger of the ages points out to us in the scroll of life. My dear boys and girls overflowing with the glori- ous enthusiasm of youth on the threshold of great things-- with real love for you, with wistful admiration for you, I exhort you to Play fair and hit the line hard. I Senior C1as5+Ten
