Often, time ' s wind will be cold and strong, And our hopes and dreams of apples fall down. They will be bruised and battered — They may wither on the harsh and real earth - But their seeds will never die. Next year, and the next, and the next, New saplings will arrive in spring And grow to newer heights and higher dreams. Some years of sun and gentle wind Our apple dreams will ripen, crisp and red, And our hopes come true as autumn winds will blow. The years will make our trees of understanding tall And we will learn to grow and cope with life. Our apples will reflect our hopes and dreams, And, because they grow, we know they will come true. ' ’ ' i i ■ ■ . • . M ’ ■■■{■■■.■ . ;::. ' Class History The first grade started our struggle to our last day as the Great Class of ' 71”. As usual, we started with the basic material — you know, ABC ' s and 1 + 1 = 2 . As we progressed through the elementary grades, we learned to tell time, sing hymns, and see lane run and Spot bark . (Difficult stuff you understand!) Second grade also brought about the daily charts with a gold star if you attended, brushed your teeth, and knew how to behave. Mrs. Lucas, however, found a solution for her students who insisted on misbehaving — Alright, who ' s got the monkey tail today? Third grade started off with a bang! The girls played chase with the boys (yeh, and some still do) and for some reason jimmy Coppola and Vicki Vir- vos had to stay in a lot. And poor David Parker — he used to number his girlfriends according to which he liked the best. During our fifth grade year the styles of the time included a pink and white or blue and white striped seersucker shift for the girls. Some had two or three! The well-dressed boy wore a paisley shirt. Our favorite place after school was Scottie ' s. Some of the more talented people joined the band that year. Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star — remem¬ ber Becky Painter? Did you ever get that down pat? Well, here we were at the top of elementary school and only five years left! Of course, in seventh grade we had our safety patrols. And who was in charge of them? — no one but the girls ' dream come true — Mr. Spratt. After a year of being on top of the world, we soon found out that being in the eighth grade meant being on the bottom for a while. We were led that year by our class president )ohn Moss, Richard Crickenberger, secretary Janis Lipman, and Treasurer Lonnie Dawson. That year the really cool thing to do was to sneak into Dragnets. This was also the year of band trips with Mr. Roof as sponsor , and to eliminate the boredom of long trips, make-out contests were begun, the medals being given as the buses arrived back at JM. Upon entering the ninth grade, we acquired sta¬ tus — well, at least we had a name — Freshmen. Our class officers that year were president, Vicki Virvos, vice-president, David Belsky, secretary, Betsy Jones, and treasurer, Lonnie Dawson. Line soccer was the sport that year in the boys ' P.E. classes. We also got a chance to read our first love story — Romeo and luliet under Mrs. Johnson. No one could ever forget Mr. Hodge, his crawly specimens, frogs, his checking hemlines to make sure they weren ' t over 3 above the knee, and his separating couples who happened to touch in the halls. Woe to those who got caught! Our 10th grade year saw us being transformed into hillbillies under the watchful eye of Mr. Dave Witcher and his Tennessee cousins. How could we ever forget all those Davy Crockett songs and poker games in the back of the room?! Right, Clay Dickinson? The silly sophomores elected Vicki Virvos as presi¬ dent, George Garner as vice-president, Kathy Rose as secretary, and Lonnie Dawson as treasurer of the class. Of course, there was the branded bare bottom bunch of the friendly hockey bus rumbles. How did they ever get the lipstick and 71 oft?! This was the year we invaded Fredericksburg ' s Hot Spot. Under the influence of Hardee ' s intoxicat¬ ing atmosphere, no one even noticed the Deathbur- gers, while in Mayfield, Carrie Grimes ' Super Market became a popular Friday and Saturday night attrac¬ tion. The Superbees came on full force in ' 68- ' 69. We went all the way to state that year and nabbed the state title on a basket thrown on the buzzer. In April the excitement of the spring season was heightened as the Elks Ballroom became the scene of our fabulous Spring Dance. Afterwards, the party¬ ing and fairy tales (How ' bout it, Georgiene and Little Bets?) continued at Kitty ' s p.j. party. How ' d you like your chocolate ice cream cups, Lindsey? Our junior year got off to a swinging start with our trip to Williamsburg. Among the highlights of the trip were seeing Citadel lose to the University of Richmond and the Russian cosmonauts as we toured Williamsburg. After all that excitement, we settled down to a quiet evening of fun and games. Stephen Dietz led the way with his Preg¬ nant Chicken and Popcorn until he disappeared down the fire escape with Martha Snead. Trying to sneak away weren ' t you! Meanwhile, the Coast 136 Guard was fighting to keep their honor clean. What do you know about that, Chickenpecker? What was going on anyway? Two of our illustrious seniors enjoyed, a midnight rendezvous on the golf course. Deliece Grimes learned the consequences of peeking out her door after curfew, when she was smashed in the nose by Twinkle Toes Massey. Se¬ riously, we learned a lot about Colonial Williams¬ burg and really enjoyed ourselves. The weekends in our junior year weren ' t bad either. How about the time Sue Traylor pushed Sandi Yost around Hot Shoppes in a Grand Union shopping cart. Boy, she ' s a speed demon!!! During our junior year Tom Sprow and his famous socks came into effect along with Miss Tutu. Also, Robert Gaines became a preacher and the church went broke! Thanks to the hard work of our class officers: president, Pat Nolan, veep, Kenny Mackmght, secre¬ tary, Ellen Graube, and treasurer, John Elwell, and the rest of us juniors, our ju nior Prom, Hawaiian Paradise , was a huge success. Spade and the In¬ sights set the pace as the luau with roasted pigs, hibiscus, and palm trees along with the waterfall added to the scenery. The beginning of this year, our Senior year, was marred by the loss of a dear friend and coach, Mr. Morris. This was a tragedy felt by all of the students and faculty. Senior class officers elected to carry us through a very busy year were Ken MacKnight, president; Cheryl Leitch, vice-president; Dorothy Ware, secre¬ tary; and John Elwell, treasurer. We also got a new principal and assistant princi¬ pal, Mr. Garnett and After all these years of blood, sweat, and tears , those of us who were fortunate enough reached our Senior year. We were fortunate in having Catherine Laurent from France join us in our final year. This was the year when some of us stopped hav¬ ing such a good time at Hardee ' s. Right, Ion Coble? Meanwhile, Midge Taylor was throwing some pretty good charity parties , while the Mayfield Civic Center became a favorite hang-out of many of the students. Once again, our fantastic athletic ability shown through as our senior men became 2nd best on the football field in state and the basketball team ad¬ vanced into the state semi-finals held in Charlottes¬ ville. By the way, what was the 102 Crew anyway, Pat Coffey? I ' m sure we ' ll never forget the day jimmy Zell made that basketball team As the curtain rose on our Senior Play (Curtain Going Up), we found Bruce Fisher tripping up the steps. However, lucky for us, he regained his co-ordination to carry out the final scene with lead¬ ing lady, Lisa Rossbacher. Once again our girls came up with a spectacular dance in the form of the Christmas Dance with the Prophets providing the music. And how about the day when Richard Cricken- berger was in the phone booth and got turned around facing the wall. Poor guy finally had to put in a dime and call the office for help! The highlight of our Senior year occurred on April 30, 1971 when, under the direction of Mr. Massey, we presented our Senior Talent Show in which Mr. Tommy Sprow won first place for his song Tobacco Road . Opening and closing this star-studded pro¬ duction were the Golddiggers. The talent show pro¬ vided the big break needed by one of Fredericks¬ burg ' s top name groups, Blesky and Company as they sang their hit recording. Okie from Muskogee . The government trip to Washington on May 17 saw our senior classmates hamming it up once again as Barry Musselman put on his gay act on the stejDS of the Capitol. Our senior members spent part of their leisure time watching America ' s latest sweetheart, Geral¬ dine. As our senior year draws to a close (and we ' re almost through Trivial Nonsense Class) and we all prepare to go our separate ways, we would like to say, Mr. Tanner, though we were told by certain people to say we didn ' t love you anymore, we just want to inform you we still do. Now with Robert Fondren leading the way as Valedictorian and Ben Hicks close behind as Saluta- torian, we leave these halls of j.M.H.S. to continue on ' Respectfully submitted, Cheryl Leitch Pat Coffey Susan Stein Sue Traylor Sandi Yost Tony Lewis 137 Class Prophecy Scene A — courtroom Welcome trusty witnesses!
