MASS HISllllil Four years ago, eighty-four members of our class entered the former James Monroe High School as freshmen. ln our heads there was a mixed feeling of joy and uncertainty. ln our hearts we hoped to become a class of which our high school would always be proud. At the beginning of our first year, we elected Carole Kesel as our president, Jack Chewning as vice-president, Nancy Wilkerson as secretary, and Jack Wilhour as treasurer. Under the guidance of our World History teacher, Miss Emeline Stearns, we won firstplace in the National Ten Biggest Events ofthe Year contest. Barbara Meredith and Theo Massey were chosen to represent the Freshman Class in the Virginia Latin Tournament. Susan Hallberg was champion of the Archery Tournament and Dulcy Houston received the Most Valuable Player Award in hockey. For our Sophomore Class officers we chose Charles Leonard as president, Nancy Prasse as vice-president, and Barbara Meredith as secretary-treasurer. During the previous year, we had lost four of our members, and our class now numbered eighty. Two of our classmates, Jane Black and Joyce Russell, received honorable mention in the Future Scientists of America contest and the Virginia Wildlife essay contest, respectively. Having gained more confidence, we began our Junior year with eighty class members. ln November, we moved into the new high school building as proud and happy upperclassmen. For our officers we selected Mitty Cowan as president, Charles Leonard as vice-president, Charlotte Walker as secretary, and Betsy Castle as treasurer. Leavelle Billingsley won second place in the state dressmaking contest of the Daughters of the American Revolution . ln foren- sics, Jack Chewning was the state winner in poetry reading, and Danny Russler won second placein prose reading. Jane Black won first place at the Virginia Junior Academy of Science with her project exhibit, and this also won second place in the Future Scientists of America contest. The Most Valuable Player Award in football and the lncentive Award in track were presented to Ducky Estes and Jerome Sale, respectively. ln the latter part of the year, Our class was saddened by the death of Mr. Guy Brown, the Superintendent of Frederickshurg's public school system for twenty-three years. This loss was deeplyfelt throughout James Monroe. However, Mr. Hook and Mr. Gordon have efficiently carried on his work. At the last of the year, Nancy Prasse, Jane Black, Mitty Cowan and Bobby Dameron were selected to represent our school at Girls and Boys State during the summer of l953. Last came our Senior year, the most important and successful of all. Bobby Dameron was elected president of our Senior Class, which now numbered seventy-six. The other class officers were: vice-president, Jack Wilhour, secretary, Nancy Prasse, and treasurer, Danny Russler. Two members of our class, Leavelle Billingsley and Charles Leonard, were chosen Homecoming Queen and King. Charles also received the Most Valuable Player Award in football. Betsy Castle, the editor of the Annual of the Class of l954, worked with endless patience to produce the best Monroe Echo ever published. Our own class president, Bobby Dameron, was ap- pointed captain of one of the two teams for the magazine drive, and Barbara Meredith served as Business Manager of the drive. Our Senior Play, One Foot in Heaven , which was produced in December, was a great success. Jack 'Chewning won first place in the American Legion Oratorical Contest, and the Daughters of the American Revolution Citizenship Award was presented to Jane Black. Martha Kimball was chosen as the Key Club Sweetheart., and Pat McGee won second place in the local WRVA-University of Richmond scholarship quiz. The class trip was a sightseeing tour of Washington, D.C. in February. Yet to come were the Junior and Senior Proms, the Senior Farewell Assembly, Sneak Day, and Commencement. We know that we shall always look back on our high school years as years of happiness and hard work, and we hope we have been a class of which James Monroe will always be proud. Theo Massey Z6
