CLASS POEM Goodbye, old walls that sheltered us And nursed us for this day; Goodbye, you years which tied so fast. And dreams which would not stay. W ' e scatter now to seek the new, Down roads that beckon far; To what dim distance will they lead? W ' hat gates will we unbar? What new horizons will unfold New vistas thru the years. And will we find a surcease there G)f laughter or of tears? No matter now, our feet fall light. And proud our heads and high; And may each sight the goal he seeks. Find strength to reach it by. I’envoi Goodbye, old walls, you seem so still And sadly brooding as we go. You surely would not have us leave With saddened step or spirits low. Rest tranquil that our hearts still hold. Amidst the new that crowds them so. The happy days—the days of old. The lovely days at James Monroe. — I- F- F . ( I 17 h In closing the Senior sec¬ tion of the 1947 Monroe Echo, the staff would like to pause briefly to pay tribute to French B. Catlett, a mem¬ ber of the class of 1947, who was killed m an automobile accident June 13, 1946. Throughout his entire high school life, French had an unusual ability in sports. He was elected to be the captain of our football team for the t’ear 1946-47. As a scholar he was rated among the best in the class, and as a friend there was no better. His enthusiasm as a stu¬ dent and leader in the school, his meritorious achievements on the athletic held, his friendship and personality, will never cease to hold a special meaning for all who knew him.
