During the 1973-74 school year, necessity has forced us to become aware, perhaps more than ever before, of the state of the world ' s affairs. Each of us has been af- fected by the gasoline shortage, either by having to pay outrageous gasoline prices, or by having to postpone returning to campus after a weekend because of Sunday gas station closings. Many of us rode the shuttle bus to and from Showalter Apartments to save gasoline. Perhaps for the first time we have been able to see a connection between an international event, such as the Arab oil embargo, and our daily lives. As children of an extremely affluent age, we found it difficult to conceive of a real, critical shortage of something so commonly and extravagantly used as gasoline. The energy crisis has invaded the normalcy of our lives. The dining hall ' s shorter hours, the reduction in the number of lights on campus at night, the initiation of Daylight Saving Time in January, and the reduction in the temperature of dormitories and classrooms have all made us aware of the need for energy conservation. We have complained about going to class in the dark and about the chilliness of our rooms, but we have survived, gaining an appreciation for the energy that we have so blithely taken for granted. Along with the energy crises, we have been observers of other historical events. For only the second time in the history of this country, the question of impeach- ment has arisen with regard to a United States Pres- ident. The Watergate situation has been both fas- cinating and awesome to many of us. As observers of the disintegration of the charismatic aura surrounding the Presidency, many of us became disillusioned with the U.S. Administration and politics, in general. We wit- nessed with surprise Agnew ' s abrupt resignation and plea of nolo contendere to a charge of income tax evasion. We could only hope, by exposing the scandals, to make it impossible for a similar series of events to occur in the future. iA s college students it is inevitable that we de- •4 velop an awareness of the relationship between our- • selves as individuals and the world in general. Our • commitment to the campus life-style, combining pred- ■ominantly study and socializing, implies this commit- ■i ment to self-awareness. Our individual programs of H Study, ideally pointing us toward some goal or role to ■i fullfill in the so-called cold, cruel world, thrust us into H decision-making positions in which we begin to realize H that our futures are being specifically determined right H now. We come to know, with some trepidation, perhaps, that we shall ail too soon leave the womb-like ; atmosphere of Madison. We have such a haven here, if we desire it. During our four years at Madison it is conceivable that some of us may completely isolate ourselves from unpleasant current events. We may all too easily fall into superficial routines of social activities, classes, homework, and weekends. We may never think deeply about anything more than the approaching weekend or the state of the dining hall food. None of us ever has to read a newspa- : per or listen to a radio news broadcast. Instead, we can broadcast or flaunt our apathy. However, as we approach our senior year, this apathetic attitude that we may project becomes less and less a protective facade. As seniors we begin to become aware that we will soon no longer be able to classify ourselves as carefree, guileless college students, but will be expected to become responsible and aware contributors to society. Our excellent variety of visiting speakers gave us an opportunity to hear the opinions of nationally-known figures first-hand. Frank Mankiewicz, 1968 press secre- tary for the Robert Kennedy presidential campaign and 1972 campaign manager for George McCovern, revealed some lesser known political scandals which have been occurring in Washington. Dick Gregory, noted comedian, civil rights advocate, and political crit- ic gave an entertaining and informative commentary on Watergate, taxes, the energy crisis, racism, Vietnam,  '  ' ' r y r y r ' ♦ ' ♦ ♦ ' ♦ ' ' t ' ' y '  '  ' '  '  ' ' r ' '   ' ' y     y ' f y  ♦ ♦ rf r f  y - yy f  ,  . , .r   . . . .. .. .4..    rl  .. .4M . f ,r  .r l |w t, , f, l h Crofts, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and a tall Bluegrass festival were excellent opportunities for skeptics to become exposed to the new style. We made it to the Miss America Pageant with Gail Vandeventer, crowned Jennifer Turner Miss Madison, held bike rallies, raffles, and mock elections. We brought about reforms in school policy by defeating the Junior English Proficiency Exam and the swimming requirement, and by influencing campus administration to allow married couples to become resident hall ad- visors. We went to Hump Parties, Martin ' s Garage, Mas- sanutten Ski Resort, and waited in vain for Comet Kohoutek to astound us with its brilliance. We dressed in our blue jeans and flannel shirts, rode our ten-speeds and found that we could not easily ignore everything but life within campus and the mountains that pro- tected us. We have created together a beautiful part of our memory of life. In September we began a year of bicycles and back packs, papers and parking, dropslips and deadlines, coffee and camping. Throughout the year we were a part of streaking, lectures, football, soccer, jobs, thefts, pressure. Roller Derby, concerts, basketball, intramural sports, yearbook pictures, fees, fires, and firedrills. We made snow angels during exams, comforted by the diversion of a heavy snowfall which psychologically buffered us from the tensions of exams. We heard rumors of an extended semester break but returned in January as planned and the cycle began again. We carry on, and grow with every day we wake. Some things we encounter are good and some are bad, but the totality of our experience makes us a little more aware and a little more knowledgeable about ourselves and about life. That ' s what it ' s all about. Dreams, so they say. Are for the fools, and they let them drift away. Peace, like the silent dove. Should be flying, but it ' s only just begun. Like Columbus in the olden days We must gather all our courage. Sail our ships out on the open sea Cast away our fears and all the years Come and gone, pick us up, always up . . . We may never pass this way again. .... James Seals DICK GREGORY and the C.I.A. He placed emphasis on the big job that we, as college students and citizens, have in improving the morals of American government and society. Professor Mary Daly, feminist leader from Boston College, expounded her theory that the oppression of women today is a result of attitudes encouraged by the Church concerning male supremacy. Professor Daly aroused mixed emotions on the subject of women ' s rights. However, when Billy Jean King defeated Bobby Riggs in one of the most controversial tennis matches ever, repercussions of these opinions on sexual equality culminated in a waterfight between two dormitories on our own lower campus. On the lighter side, we turned our attention to quite a variety of school-related activities. We won our first football game early in the ' 73 season against Anne Arundel, an event sure to gain importance as our team gains from experience. We watched the astro-turf playing field being constructed, its greenness dominating the spectrum of lower campus. We realized that it will surely prove to be both a drawing card for and advantage to Madison ' s athletic program. Madison ' s outstanding soccer goalie, Al Mayer, brought further attention to our athletics by signing a contract with the Baltimore Comets to play professional soccer. William Windom, noted television and stage person- ality, entertained us with a dramatic interpretation of some of James Thurber ' s works. Bluegrass music became increasingly popular. Its lively foot-stomping spirit proved quite a diversion from the hard rock sounds that have previously domi- nated the most of our record collections. Seals and DIVERSION jKtii -s .s . ' -jTjf. The team set a new school record of 56 goals in 13 games by 21 different players as opposed to the old record of 43 goals in 16 games. Ray Laroche led the scoring and broke previous school records with ten goals. Laroche and Nino Altomonte share a new school record with eight assists each. Along with their second straight state championship, the team won the Western Division Championship titles of both the Virginia Collegiate Athletic Association (4-0-0) and the Virginia Intercollegiate Soccer Association (5-0-1). Five players from the Madison squad were named to the VISA Western Division team this year. First team honors went to Ray Laroche, Chico Diguardo, Al Mayer, Pat Baker, and Bob Viti. Coach Vanderwarker was voted coach of the 1973 Western Division All-Stars. The team won over the Univer- sity of Maryland in the NCAA Regionals, but lost to Clemson in the NCAA Southern Regionals. I FOOTBALL 1973 was the second year for Madison ' s football pro- gram. Competing on the junior varsity level, the team achieved its first win and first touchdown against Anne Arundel early in the season. Considering that the majority of the squad ' s sixty members had never before played together, Coach Mc- Millin feels that the team did a fine job. The large number of freshmen on the ' 73 team allows for an op- timistic outlook on next year ' s squad when Madison will be competing on the varsity level. The young and de- veloping football team began to show its possibilities while the soccer, baseball, and basketball teams main- tained their traditional superior levels. An astro-turf playing field was built, offering many advantages to Madison ' s sports activities. Intramural and club sports must not be disregarded in an overall view of Madison ' s sports. Intramural sports allowed many students to participate in the cooperative and spirited atmosphere of the competition and f comradeship of sports. Women ' s intramural sports ac- tivities included a Dynamite Fat Fight, tennis, volleyball, fencing, a Swim and Stay Fit program, bowling, softball, and ping-pong. The volleyball competition, organized $ primarily by dormitories, was won by Chappelear. f However, Hoffman One put up a good fight. Men ' s in- tramural basketball involved more than 900 students in f an enthusiastic season. Men students also participated with their fellows in volleyball, football, soccer, wres- tling, Softball, and track and field. ♦ During the spring 1973 season, the track and field X team achieved a record of three wins and two losses. % Individual honors were achieved by Kevin Fitzgerald, ♦ jerry Ligon, Greg Cerlach, Brent Good, Bill Mahone, 4 Craig Hartz, Chip Jean, and Kenny Collins, including the 4 breaking of fourteen school records. The team looks T forward to the 1974 season when our own track will be ready for use. $ At the same time, the lacrosse team, coached by Mrs. Judy Campbell, achieved a varsity record of four wins fand two losses and a junior varsity record of five wins, one loss, and one tie. The team hosted the Virginia ♦ Women ' s Lacrosse Association Tournament as well as T the Great Britain Touring Team. At the Virginia Tour- nament, nine players were selected to play on the top f three state teams, while three ineligible seniors received honorable mention. ♦ The 1973 baseball team, playing its most competitive T schedule ever, earned a record of twelve wins and nine losses. It ranked second in the Virginia Collegiate Ath- letic Association standings and lost in the semi-finals to ,A eventual state champions, Bridgewater College, by a ▼ score of two to nothing. The successful season was % climaxed by the team ' s receiving a nomination to the N.C.A.A. playoffs in Florida. The Dukes, however, were not selected, as Baltimore University received the vote of the committee. Only one starter was lost via gradua- tion, Jim Sparling, a first team all V.C.A.A. centerfielder who played every game during his four years at Madison. Returning starters for 1974 include All- V.C.A.A. pitcher Larry Hunt, as well as Pete Jones, Chris Baker, and Tim Dobson. The 1974 schedule of 3 games includes twelve university division teams. Among these twelve teams are the University of South Carolina, the University of Virginia, Furman, the Citadel, and William and Mary. With the addition of numerous promising freshmen and an outstanding baseball complex, 1974, only their fourth year of varsity competition, could be the best ever for Coach Brad Babcock ' s Dukes. Coached by John Rader, the men ' s tennis team completed its fourth consecutive winning season with a record of nine wins and five losses. Alan Mayer led the team with a 12-1 record as the Number 1 singles ' player and was selected Most Valuable Player for the second year in a row. Mayer and Jim Morris played Number 1 doubles, defeating the Number 1 seeded team in the V.C.A.A. Tournament before losing in the finals. Other members of the ladder were Richie Coleman (Number 3), Dennis Evans (Number 4), Marty Yesowitch (Number 5), and Steve Holstrom (Number 6). Coach Bette L. Harris of the women ' s tennis team had nothing but praise to give the girls of the 1973 season. The team ended with a record of five wins and four losses. All losses, however, were quite close. The season was highlighted by the defeat of arch rival Mary Baldwin College. The team tied for seventh place out of nineteen schools in the V.F.I.S.C.W. State Tournament. Top four players on the team were Debra Abshire, Diana Cray, Elaine Good, and Cathie Nolan. . . . .« f. . . 4. f4. 4 K . . . 4. 4  4,. .. . K  60 1973 was characterized as a period of adjustment for the men ' s golf team. The young team and new coach showed much potential by achieving a winning record of nine wins, six losses, and one tie. For the last two years, the team has recieved bids to participate in the Nationals. The team finished second in both the V.C.A.A. Tournament and the State Tournament, College Division. Top players D.L. Moyers and Bill Lam averaged 72.9 and 73.5 strokes per match, respectively. Spring 1973 was also a triumphant season for the women ' s golf team. Losing only to William and Mary, the team chalked up a record of seven wins and one loss. The golfers competed in the V.F.I.S.C.W. and won the state championship. Another successful season was achieved by the arch- ery team. The women placed second in the state tour- nament. Sue Vincke placed first and Barbara Long placed fifth. Bob Ryder led the men with the distin- guished record of placing first in all matches in which he participated. The team also participated in the U.S. Intercollegiate Archery Tournament at East Stronds- burg, Pa. Bob Ryder placed first in this competition and 4th in the World Tryouts during the summer. Other top men were Ray Stone, Gary Byrnes, and Steve Gurlen. Madison women volleyball players had an active, winning season, achieving a record of nineteen wins and only nine losses. They were runners-up in the state tournament and represented Virginia in the regionals. The second team had a record of nine wins and one loss under the leadership of Phyllis Travisano, a gradu- ate assistant. Under the coaching leadership of Dr. Morrison, both the varsity and junior varsity field hockey teams en- joyed winning seasons. The varsity team ' s impressive record included nine wins, one loss, and two ties, while the junior varsity team achieved a similar record of eight wins, two losses, and one tie. Eight Madison players were named to the eleven-player Blue Ridge Area Team which participated in the Southeastern Field Hockey Tournament at Sweet Briar College. Madison women named to Southeastern teams were Sue Red- field, Kathy Bond, Brenda Dutterer, Betty Lewis, Pat Kelley, and Jane Elliott. Over the Thanksgiving week- end, the team helped represent the Southeast Region at the National Tournament in Boston. Leading runners for the cross country team were Chris McDonald, Pete Wright, Chip Jean, Bill Mahone, Bill Fletcher, J.O. Phillips, and David Rinker. In dual meets the team achieved ten wins and one loss. It ranked third in V.C.A.A. standings. The gymnastics team performed exhibitions at Alleghany County High School in Covington, Virginia. The women judged four high school meets, also. The women competed . ith Longwood College and Virginia Tech while the nen competed with William and Mary and Catonsville Community College in Maryland. The Madison riding team, trained by Mrs. Theodosia Berry, owner of Oak Manor Equitation School, finished its second year of competition. Activities included the Rockbridge Hunt Club Horse Show, the Oak Manor Field Hunter Trials, the Keswick Hunter Pace Event, the Sweet Briar Winter Schooling Show, and our own Madison Invitational Horse Show. Our riders obtained one tri-color reserve champion ribbon, five first place blue ribbons, three second place red ribbons, five third place yellow ribbons, seven fourth place white ribbons, plus two silver trophies and a leather chain lead strap. The first competitive season for the men ' s swimming team was outstanding for such a young team. Madison swimmers competed with Washington and Lee, V.M.I., Massanutten Academy, and S.M.A. The relatively small group of nine swimmers and divers included six freshmen, one sophomore, and two juniors. Coach Ar- nold is extremely optimistic about the team ' s future, due primarily to the dedication and cooperation of the group. Outstanding swimmers were freshmen Steve Peduto, Mike Gauthier, and Paul Regan; sophomore John Turner; and juniors, Lou Suta and Tom Schmaltz. The Dukes ' wrestling team, in only its second year of competition, faced a tough schedule but managed to end the season with a modest record of nine wins and nine losses. Since most of the wrestlers were un- derclassmen, the team has a good foundation and outlook for the future is good. Outstanding wrestlers for the 1974 season included Tim O ' Rourke, Mike Moore, Robert Peach, Jeff Havard, Jim Keefer, and Larry Harrigan. The fencing team represented Virginia at the NIWFA Individual Championship and the National Team Com- petition. At the Virginia Invitationals, Madison finished third in Varsity competition while the JV ' s finished first. Under the coaching of Miss Jaynes, the women ' s basketball team completed their season with a 17-3 record for varsity and 14-1 in junior varsity play. The team seeded No. 1 in the state going into the state tour- nament held in Williamsburg, losing in the second round to Emory and Henry. They hosted the Region II AIAW Tournament with 1 1 teams. The women ' s swim team had successful season ended by hosting the state championship meet. The medly relay team, consisting of Mary Butters, Mary Jane Syzmanski, Donna Chamblee and Ellen Meadows, won second place medals. Other medal winners were Terry Grove and Randi Reppen. Arlene Goodspeed and Maria LoPriesti won first and second place medals in the one meter diving event. ♦ ♦ • 61 ' 73 TRACK FIELD MC 39 Washington and Lee 106 MC87 Guilford 58 MC 75 Chrislopher Newport 51 MC 75 Roanol e 54 MC 63 Bridgewater 82 MEN ' S TENNIS MCO Randolph Macon 9 MC8 Eastern Mennonite 1 MC7 Roanoke 2 MC8 Bridgewater 1 MC8 Shepherd 1 MCI Old Dominion 7 MC 1 Hampden-Sydney 8 MC6 Eastern Mennonite 3 MC9 Bridgewater MC5 George Mason 4 MC9 Virginia Westeyan MC8 VMI 1 MC 4 U. of Richmond 5 MC 3 Lynchburg 6 WOMEN ' S TENNIS MC 3 Mary Washington 2 MC8 Mary Baldwin 7 MC4 Lynchburg 3 MC2 U of MD 5 MC9 Roanoke MC2 VCU 3 MC4 Longwood 5 MC3 Hollins 4 MC6 Bridgewater 1 LACROSSE VARSITY MC 13 Bridgewater 11 MC 5 Mary Washington 10 MC 14 Fro St burg 15 MC 9 U. of MD. 5 MC 11 William Mary 4 MC13 Hollins 9 MC 7 J.V. Primarily dominated by freshmen and sophomores, the team was undaunted by the prospect of facing the toughest schedule ever. For the first time, the Dukes faced V.M.I., the Citadel, and Old Dominion. Leading scorers were Wilbert Mills, Dave Correll, Tim Meyers, John Cadman, David Van Alstyne, Joe Frye, and Sherman Dillard. During Christmas vacation, our players attended the Citrus Invitational Tournament in Lakeland, Florida. Here they were defeated by Valdosta State, in an ex- tremely close game that was eventually decided in four overtimes. Sherman Dillard set a Madison record by scoring 38 points in this contest and was named to the All-Tournament Team. The Dukes accepted a bid to play in the South Regional NCAA tournament against Fisk University, but lost in a very close match. We went farther and did better than anyone could have imagined us to go and it is a tribute to the kids and the staff, commented the team ' s proud coach Lou Campanelii. 88 N ADISON COllEGE SPORTS NETWORK WMRA 91.1 FM WSVA 550 AM Bottom: Mgr. ' ABEI ;i.i E 156 ALPHA PHI OMEGA Alpha Phi Omega is the largest National Service Frater- nity in America and the Brothers and Sisters of APO have made 1973-74 one of the most successful years of service in their history. APO sponsored the first annual American Cancer Society Bike-a-thon in October, a tradition they hope will grow from year to year. Helping to establish a Boy and Girl Scout troop for retarded children was another project that the chapter helped. On campus, APO has con- tinued its weekly book lift service to the student body, and looks ahead to an expanded program of leadership, friendship, and service.
