As a child growing up in a racist Alabama town, she decided her name would one day be known. She began working at an early age to make that happen. Today, Collins operates the Westside Preparatory School in Chicago. She tells her students the same thing she said to the students at James Madison. lt is a sin not to set goals, Collins said. There is no dishonor if high goals are not always reached, but it is unacceptable to not even try. Average won't do it. Collins' message is that a positive self image and high aspirations coupled with old-fashioned effort are essential for everyone.
