AFRO-AMERICAN HERITAGE PROGRAM Dallas County Commissioner, John Wiley Price, and KDFW-TV Host Juana Hart were guest speakers at the African American Heritage Program held in observ- ance of Afro-American Month. Ad- dressing the issues of the value of education and the importance of accepting a heritage, the speak- ers informed and entertained a captive audience using words of wisdom and anecdotes. Negro spirituals were rendered by the Concert Choir, and special rec- ognition was given to winners of the Afro-American History con- test. The occasion provided a means for commemorating Afro- American History Month and for promoting student involvement through the opportunity of ex- pressing the theme, Keep the Dream Alive! As a child growing up in a racist Alabama town, she decided her name would one day be known. She began working at an early age to make that happen. Today, Collins operates the Westside Preparatory School in Chicago. She tells her students the same thing she said to the students at James Madison. lt is a sin not to set goals, Collins said. There is no dishonor if high goals are not always reached, but it is unacceptable to not even try. Average won't do it. Collins' message is that a positive self image and high aspirations coupled with old-fashioned effort are essential for everyone.
