Few people realize the amount of time and hard work that is needed to make a successful sports program. The girls' Volleyball Team is an excellent example of that effort. Dur- ing the fall, the team practiced two hours daily, with the help of Coaches Hamilton and Cohen. The team's most valu- able player, Mary Slobodny. led the girls in competitions against the best teams in Western League. Games included many victories, as well as close losses, with an overtime game against league champs Point Loma. A new concept in CIF has been interschool competition be- tween girls' athletic teams. One of Madison's most success- ful girls’ teams was the Badminton team. During the fall, the team practiced for two to three hours daily. Evidently, the long hard hours of practice paid off. The Hawks smash- ed their way to victories over Kearny. Pt. Loma. Mission Bay. and University, with their lone defeat to the Chieftains. Nevertheless. Madison's 4-1 record was good enough to earn a three way tie for Western league crown, and CIF play- offs. Unfortunately, the Hawks dropped a decision to the CIF champions. La Jolla. Overall the team did an outstand- ing job for their second year of CIF competition. A trophy was given to Coach Seaman with We must have done some- thing right after all-we won! engraved upon it.
