J.V. FOOTBALL The Junior Varsity Football Team took shape last May. when Dave Mills was promoted to head coach. Although many people said the Hawks lacked proper size, they proved them wrong, as they won their first game against Escondido. They showed that desire and de- termination play a big part in an athlete's per- formance. The JV players practiced hard to put together a successful season. They also gained needed experience for potential varsity posi- tions next year. The Warhawks worked hard to earn high ratings in Western League Competition. This was the first year in Madison's history that a 21 game schedule was completed. To prepare for this busy season, the Hawks prac- ticed many long hours under the watchful eye of Coach Dugger. With the help of experience and the ad- vancement of new skills, the team proved to be one of the top conten- ders for the Western League crown. 240 Athletics

The Archery Club meets at least twice a week at Madison, and sometimes uses the facilities at the Balboa Range on weekends. Students in this club strive to improve their style while learning the safest ways of shooting. Respect for the equipment used for hunting and competition is another important factor which is stressed. Mr. Penn, the club ad- visor. works hard to keep the club active. With constant use of patience and coordination, the members of Madison’s Archery Club soon gain the skill necessary to make every shot count. This year our six-member rifle team participated in matches against many highly ranked teams from all over Southern California. The team has been undefeated in five matches. Using .22 caliber rifles, they shot at bullseyes. the size of a period, from a distance of fifty feet. Kim Barrow, the best shot in Southern California, led the group through the keen competition.
