COUNTRY The Cross Country Team put in a lot of time and effort to get in shape for the Fall season. Most of the members averaged fifteen miles a day to prepare for a two mile meet. Coach Elliot trained the determined team over a course of hills, sand, and rocks. The guys used hard work and willpower to form a very successful team. CROSS Athletics

VARSITY FOOTBALL The varsity football season opened on September 21st in Escondido. The Warhawks came back from a 7-0 deficit to romp past the Cou- gars 20-7. The following week found Madison at Lakeside facing the El Capitan Vaqueros. We got out in front early. 7-0. and held on to win 7-6. Madison was at home the following week against the surprisingly tough Morse Tigers. The team fell behind late in the game but drove down to salvage a 6-6 tie by scoring in the last ten seconds of the game. Week four pitted the Hawks against Mike Kennedy and the St. Augustine Saints. Kennedy entered the game as the county's leading passer but was stifled by the Madison de- fense. The Hawks spotted the Saints a 20-0 lead but came back to top them 21-20 on Ricky Jack- son's touchdown and 2 point con- version with less than a minute left in the game. The Hawks en- tered league play undefeated, but ended with an overall record of 5- 222 Athletics
