The Rock I stood at the base as many have and gazed up at the steep and jagged cliffs. and wondered and wished. But I said. I shall. Sure that I could. but uncertain of the way. I started up. The everyday things grew smaller, as I went higher. Hand over hand. a small speck of life, clinging to sheer rock. Looking for and finding footholds. I went higher. Pausing to look down. I could see nothing, for the fog had enveloped me. I could see nothing except for what was of nature, and all was peaceful. But the fog hung around me still, so on I went. Past the cliffs now. the climbing was easier. And then. through a swirl of mist, the top— And there below me stretched out in all directions, lay a thick blanket of fog. Only the mountain tops could be seen, jutting into a vast, clear blue sky. I was alone. alone except for nature and the peace she bred. But alas. the truth is in my own words. I am alone except for what is natural. I am as natural as any human can be. and I must descend and search for what I need. For a need is what gives our lives purpose. But in once achieving the top.
