Track Team Opens Season With Strong Start Track season opened with two non- league triangular meets for Madison. Both meets took place on the Warhawk track. Coach Schuler's squad placed second in the first of the two meets with Granite Hills winning top honors and Hoover taking third. Team members combined efforts against competitors San Dicguito and Montgomery to finish with a first place. The highlight of pre-season activities was the San Diego Prep C.I.F. Track Championships on February 19th. War- hawks Bob Sturgeon, Kurt Nelson, Bill Mowry, Dick Wilson, Dave Holl- ingsworth and Bob Mowry qualified to participate in the meet. The 5th Annual San Diego Indoor Games followed the track competition between the San Diego area high schools. OPPOSITE PAGE.TOP LEFT: Varsity trackman. Strong Swimmers Set School Records Swim team members broke their own records and school records this year, taking top honors in swimming and diving events. Steve Beyers broke his own 1:15.5 school 100 yard breaststroke record with a time of 1:14.2 in a match a against Kearny. The following week he set another record cutting one second off his time. Individual efforts and team efforts brought fine results in the relay competition and individual events. Rick Garner, the outstanding diver of the team, took top honors in diving in almost all of the team’s meets. Talented Lcttcrmcn Larry Blenis, Steve Boyers, Mike Child, Rick Garner, Eric Nelson.Jess Steiger, Dale Ince. and Mark Van Duren have put in many hours each week working out and perfecting turns and skills at the Boys’ Club.
