Early Risers Achieve Excellence “I wanna sec dust fly! Over the crashing of cymbals, the blaring of trum- pets, and the earth-shaking rumble of drums. Mr. Wolfe made himself heard. Students scrambled to find their positions in the marching unit. Only seven o’clock and already sixty-seven bright-eyed band members, the majorettes, and the banner carriers assembled on the Madison football field to perfect their marching techniques. Some mornings even six-foot five inch drum major, Dan Dangel. could not be seen on the field, but he was there com- peting with the early morning fog. Assistant drum major, Debbie McAhren, found the chilly mornings invigorating. A few thought it a refreshing way to start a school day. Many more were less enthusiastic about dragging them- selves out of bed at six o’clock. Half-time performances, parades, and competition kept these determined Warhawks moving. The Autumn Band Review gave the marchers a chance to show their superiority to previous marching units and they did. A favorable 80.3 was scored as compared to last year's record of 78.8. Year by year, with the active support of students and the Madison Band Parents' Club, members of the Madison Marching Band come closer to the peak of perfection they strive for through constant drills. Choir Sings Christmas Concert in Balboa Park Madison’s concert choir, chosen to sing at a community concert in Balboa Park, was the best the Madison music department has ever seen. They performed in many special programs during the Christ- mas season and throughout the year. The choir gained superior rat- ings in competition due to the fine directing of Mr. Davidson and the determined, hard-working attitude displayed by the group.
