A Time for. . . ACTIVITIES Whal is the draft? By virtue of this question, many Madison students got a glimpse of a time not so far away in their future. The draft, a concern for every boy on campus, was the subject of the Human Relations Committee seminar on November 12th. Free-wheeling discussion, whole-hearted enthu- siasm. and dedicated service set the pace for this year's activities. The ASB Executive Council tackled the annual problem of encouraging student participation with resourcefulness and determination. Pep Club provided an outlet for the turbulent emotions set off by Madison's triumphant teams. Senior girls in Madleens found time to devote to a ser- vice project at Sharp Rehabilitation Center. Ro- mads sponsored a knock-down, drag-out tug-of -war where both students and teachers found that a good mud bath wasn’t all that bad. AFS goals were realized this year with the coming of two foreign exchange students from Italy and Indonesia, while two more students from Sweden and Ger- many brought the overseas entourage to a grand total of four. As a result of the widespread need for money, competition was keen as clubs vied for dates on the activities calendar. No club was able to comer the after-school sale market, as candy apples. suckers, brownies and other taste-tempting treats enticed the hungry Madison student. Educational college programs brought the as- pects and realities of college into focus for many seniors. Prospective San Diego State College applicants at Madison were dismayed when they found out that they were part of a group of 6.000 expected applicants - and only 3,000 could be admitted. The ASB Ball recalled a white Christ- mas never seen in San Diego as it ushered in a much welcomed Christmas vacation. Along with such ac- tivities as Girls' League's perennial Sadie Haw- kins, it provided students with a time for relaxation and exuberance. I.EFT - The major responsibility for organizing school activ- ities rested with the ASB Executive Council. Members were Treasurer Maureen Johnston, Senior Class President Penny lodice. Commissioner of Fine Arts Steve Pittman. Vice Pres- ident Karen Rcinwald. Commissioner of GAA Vicki Roudc- bush. Secretary Christine Yang. Commissioner of Publications Virginia Weeks, and President Bob Sturgeon. Not pictured arc Commissioner of Student Activities Connie Naymik, Commis- sioner of Boys’ Athletics Rick Gamer. Junior Class President Gaylenc Benedict, and Sophomore Class President Ann Baker. BELOW - The gavd that signifies student government was seen at ASB representative meetings. It was also present at the ASB Nominating Convention where the democratic process became the means for the election of a new Executive Council. Activities 117
