The 1972-73 year came quickly to Madison, but it did not catch the school unaware. New ideas were put into effect and old ones were improved. An example could be seen in the remodeling of the Area III offices into math and reading labs, providing a more centered learn¬ ing environment necessary for those subjects. The journey of a thousand miles Begins with a single step. The library had the right idea on how to start the new year. An empty classroom soon filled with students, proving that all summers must come to an end. 52 Baby Hawks Take Their First Look At Madison! At freshmen orientation, the freshmen were introduced to life at Madison. For most of them it marked the beginning of new friendships, experiences and respon¬ sibilities. As shown by their early enthu¬ siasm, the Class of ' 76 may turn out to be one of our more spirited classes. Let ' s hope so! Right: Organization leaders describe their purposes and activities for the coming year. What need we teach a child . . with our books and rules? Let him walk among the hills and flowers, let him gaze upon the waters, let him look up to the stars . . . and he will have his wisdom. —Anglund 53 Diane Giovacchini Reigns As 1972 Homecoming Queen Over the 50 ' s For a change Homecoming was held on a Friday night this year. But it was just as elaborate as ever under the lights. All the floats were designed accord¬ ing to the theme, the 50 ' s. The princesses were: sen¬ ior Thalia Gerachis, senior Janet Alces, junior Lynn Rhame, sophomore Jeanette Voas, and freshman Selene Mahaffey. The annual Homecoming Dance was held the following night, ending the 1972 Home¬ coming festivities. A happy winner stands with her escort, Steve Roman after being crowned. The ' 72 court lines up, from left to right: Tim McGahan, Selene Mahaffey, George Gerachis, Jeanette Voas. Norman Rodier, Lynn Rhame, Carl Schogren, Janet Alces, Geoff James, Thalia Gerachis. The winning class float, Rock-n-Roll the Patriots , was contributed by the seniors. Below: Majorettes Debbie Woodson and Danita Gal- brieth joined in the Homecoming festivities. The band ' s giant Houndog was the win¬ ning organization float. The Madisonettes contributed their version of the ' 50s. 55 A Week Full Of School Spirit Spirited posters line the walls in a hall decoration contest between classes. The sophomores take part in the tug-of-war contest during the lunch periods. Here they come! Students arrive for the pep assembly before the big game. 56 Juniors Sponsor Annual Magazine Drive During a special assembly day, when ail classes had their own assemblies, the essentials of the Maga¬ zine drive were explained. The juniors presented skits, scenes of which are shown here. Jack Dearmitt prepares to flash his irresistible smile at Phil Culkin uses his charm and wit to sell his subscriptions, a prospective buyer. The juniors who took part in the presentation line up. 57 The girls line up for the hot pants competition. Diane Huband models a winning outfit. The five semi-finalists eagerly await the results of the judging. 58 Lorrie Mahaffey is Crowned Miss Madison of 1973 The second annual Miss Madison pageant was held in October 1972. Sponsored by the Future Homemakers of America, it was a great success. The sophomores provided entertain¬ ment with a skit and the majorettes also per¬ formed. The five semi-finalists were Diane Huband, Sheree Simmons, Jean Ball, Joyce Thompson and Lorrie Mahaffey. Congratulations go to the F.H.A., all the girls and master of ceremonies, Mr. Verciglio, for a beautiful pageant. Lorrie Mahaffey is crowned Miss Madison by last year ' s winner, Patty Jaggers. There were doors to be decorated, cans to be col¬ lected, assemblies to be prepared for, and various other activities. The excitement of the holidays was evident on the faces of everyone. The team was hurt by graduation of many key seniors and the inexperience showed. After a fine opening perfor¬ mance against Robinson, the squad just could not seem to open up in another game. They came very close a few times but turnovers and an inability to put points up on the board kept them from achieving their goal. By far the most im¬ pressive showing of the year was against Marshall. After spotting Marshall seven points early in the game, Madi¬ son ' s defense held against the District ' s best offense. It caused a number of turnovers, but the offense couldn ' t capitalize on them until late in the fourth quarter. A long pass from Will Bernard was completed in the end zone with only a minute and a half remaining in the game. The two point conversion failed and an upset was avoided. 1972 VARSITY FOOTBALL RECORD Madison 14 Robinson 6 Madison 13 Stuart 40 Madison 13 Herndon 14 Madison 0 Langley 6 Madison 0 Yorktown 7 Madison 0 Falls Church 14 Madison 0 W L 7 Madison 8 Oakton 41 Madison 12 McLean 15 Madison 6 Marshall 6 Above: Kicker Greg Holroyd attempts a point after touchdown, despite the efforts of an Oakton Cougar. FOOTBALL The J.V., after losing their first five games, won three straight impressively to end out the year. Due to their hard work, the season may be termed a success. The boys should provide the talent necessary for reestablishing Madison as a football power. FRESHMAN FOOTBALL The Baby Warhawks had a super season this year. They were undefeated and had only six points scored on them all season! Under fine coaching, Madison just devastated every team they came up against. For the first time in Madison ' s history enough people went out to merit both a varsity and J.V. Their dual meet record was 3-3 which may not look im¬ pressive at first. However, the three losses were to three top contenders in the region including Marshall who placed first in the state. With all this competition in the Great Falls District Meet, the Warhawks fought hard but had to settle for fourth place. In the regional meet the team ran to a respectable eleventh. Sophomore Chuck Forbes and junior Tom Curling paced the team through the season and should provide a nucleus for a strong team next year. ' Freeman, VARSITY BASKETBALL 1972-1973 Madison s varsity squad finished a dismal season with a record of 5 wins against 16 losses. Falling behind early in the game and having to play catch-up ball plagued the War- hawks all season. The only signs of brilliance were shown midway through the season with consecutive victories over Marshall, Oakton, and Yorktown, followed by a one point loss to W-L. Coach Norm Chaudet retired after winning dis¬ trict, and was replaced by Coach Bill Malkin . Bob Moss, a new member of Madison ' s English department, is also helping the fellas with their invariable second spin serve, and their tennis workbooks. This year ' s top six should be composed of returning starting seniors Bill Dembo, Randy Owens, and Gary Quam, a bright new star Mark Dinterman, also a senior, and returning letter- man Jeff Leppo, a senior, and sophomore Steve Muff. The team also relies on Ralph Smith and his friend, who, even though they don ' t walk much like tennis players, have won¬ derful cut backhands. The season has increased from the usual ten matches to fourteen, due to the addition of Yorktown and W-L in the Great Falls District. With three matches scheduled in March, the team has had to work extra hrard to prepare for their opener against tough W-L. Last year they bought a crash pad for track and field; this year they purchased kilts for the hockey team; and next year the GAA hopes to buy a balance beam to replace the partially split one. They earn their money from bake sales, sweat shirts, and cushions but also have Fun Nights and an annual Mother-Daughter Banquet specifically for enjoyment. At the December Fun Night they repaired old toys that they had collected for needy children in the Vienna area. The favorite event for all official members is the initiation of those girls who had recently lettered in a sport. She rang it out with sympathy in her voice and it became clear I had no choice — but to change . . . Her words were music to my ears she cleared up my doubts, she cleared up my fears, and When I went to sleep that night I saw my own soul with a new kind of sight. She was bright, and she was nice, but her time came like a roll of the dice She ' s been through trials and She ' s been through pain — but now She ' s made it through the rain Mrs. Donohoe, keep smiling and brighten up the room. Mrs. Donohoe, keep smiling, and We ' ll all see you soon.
