I ime, you old gypsy man, Will vou not stav, Put up your caravan Just lor one day? Ralph liodgsou The Montpelier 1962 Published by the Students of James Madison High School Vol. II Foreword I ime, like the Gypsy Man, will never stay. 1 he good times and the had flee with equal indifference to the memories they leave behind. The year 1962 has afforded us many op¬ portunities for enrichment. We have opened new frontiers in friendship. As our com¬ bined efforts have succeeded, our individual loyalty has been strengthened. As the days of this school year have trickled through the hourglass, the staff of The Montpelier has attempted to hold back time by leaving a picture of the events of our school year. J ■ : ■ . - t?: i ' m : ( i : i ' .. m ■ 3K- ■ 1 he timely visit of Bashir Ahmed, the camel driver from Pakistan, gave our school the oppor¬ tunity to help strengthen international friendship. ith permission from our government, our stu¬ dent body launched a program to send supplies to a school chosen by Ahmed. The drive is sched¬ uled to last for a total of four years. Mr. Bonner, our principal, looks on as Bashir Ahmed greets the student body. Young ladies from the Pakistani Embassy sing their national anthem at an assembly program. Claire Brossartl, our exchange student brought from France by our student body, launched the beginning of our foreign exchange program to further better understanding of other countries. Claire Brossard Mrs. Griffin and Ryan Stewart look on as Neen Blackwell and Donna Davis welcome Claire Brossard to James Madison. A visit from the Danish Gymnastics Team and their participation in our Physical Education classes revealed to us the friendly nature of the Danish people. Two Danish students demonstrate exercises to one of our Physical Education classes. Members of the Danish Gymnastics Team perform a folk dance as part of their program presented to the students in a special assembly. We also wish to welcome our new Superintendent, Mr. Funderburk, as the head of the administration of our growing school population. Superintendent E. C. Funderburk School Board Dr. Hillis Lory Chairman Theodore S. Heriot Dr. Merton S. Parsons Mrs. Joan Butler Mr. F. Merritt Ruhlen Col. Waldron E. Leonard Mr. Berg Thomasian Administration The success of our school year, to a large degree, is the result of the efficiency and hard work of our administrative staff. The staff finds it hard to work by the clock, l ime must be found for the many conferences, meetings, and duties that are part of a school. The solving of problems that of necessity arise in a school day is as unending as the tick-tock of a grandfather’s clock. 13 , 0 . Elton A. Bonner, A.B., M.A. University of Alabama Principal Our principal places his finger on the clock to start the day’s schedule. It is he who reminds us that our school is made of many parts that must work together as a time¬ piece if its true purpose is to be realized. Principal’s Message . • • It is difficult to realize that our present seniors were the sophomores of the new James Madison High School when it opened its doors to its first student body in 1959 — or that our juniors, for the most part, will have the unique experience of graduating only next year from the same high school from which they entered as freshmen. We have been together for such a short while and yet we are again facing another division of our student body as other new schools are soon to open in nearby sections of the county. For some the ex¬ periences of separation from friends will begin all over again, and the struggle to breathe new life into another cold and inanimate arrangement of brick and glass will again be the order of the day. Many of you will welcome this challenge. There will be new oportunities for leadership, for mak¬ ing a new start, for living through many inter¬ esting and exciting experiences in a fine new building with all of its bright and modern equip¬ ment. Whatever may be your feelings, be they of eager anticipation or of resentment and disappointment, the change will inevitably come, for this is a sym- o J J hoi of the time in w Inch we live. We make ad¬ justments and learn to live with the facts of our present age. We do so realizing also that we live during the time of exciting adventure, of rapid discovery, of long hoped for breakthroughs in science a nd invention, of boundless opportunities. And we are assuredly living at a time when young people have never been better prepared for facing the challenges of their future. To those budding pioneers who will be leaving us to open one of the schools, we shall miss you, but we know that you will build a fine school just as you have done here at James Madison. To you seniors—congratulations! We have great confidence that you will carry with you the fine Warhawk spirit which you have established here, and that wherever you go you will prove your- yourselves loyal and true Americans, always proud but always humble, always doing your best to become the most highly trained and conscientious people within your capabilities. Bon Voyage! 14 Elam K. Hertzler, A.B., M.A. Eastern Mennonite College Eastern Michigan University Assistant Principal for Administration The task of keeping up with all seventeen hundred of us falls to Mr. Hertzler. When we lag behind and get out of step, he is the one who has to remind us of our re¬ sponsibilities to our school, our parents, and especially to ourselves. George G. Dozier, A.B., M.A. University of North Carolina Assistant Principal for Instruction To keep instruction at a high professional level and the faculty a well integrated group working for the whole school program takes patience and wisdom. With his quiet humor and southern drawl, Mr. Dozier performs a difficult task with apparent ease. Harriet Reid, A.B., M.A. Agnes Scott College University of Michigan Director of Guidance Miss Reid, with a dedicated staff, performs a multitude of services for the students, school, and community. To give you an idea of her activities, we mention scheduling of classes, arranging of student and parent conferences, pre¬ paring college entrances, planning and giving tests, han¬ dling scholarship information and records, making speeches, and the main job of providing counseling for each student at James Madison. Norman L. Chaudet, B.S., M.A. University of Maryland Health and Physical Education Madison Club Sponsor As director of the athletic program for James Madison, Mr. Chaudet finds his time filled with many duties. The planning of a program to benefit all students, pro¬ viding equipment for classes and teams, scheduling inter¬ scholastic contests, attending meetings and conferences make up part of his schedule. 16 On Time Miss Mills, Miss MacEachron, and Mr. Murrow checking in to start a busy day crowded with classes and activities. Mrs. Carol Bi Ohio State Study Our school life is divided into many phases, with the time proportioned between class work and extra curricular activities. I he Seniors are busy getting ready for gradu¬ ation, the Juniors excited about class rings, the Sophomores worried about next year’s Prom, and the Freshmen glad to spend the whole day at Madison. All the classes work together, in spite of certain class competition, to better the school and themselves. It is with joy and sorrow that the classes look back over last year and relive the many exciting times. 41 Senior class officers: Carol Jennings, treasurer; Linda Davis, secretary; Michael Clark, vice-president; Marc Minton, president. The Class of 1962 Class rings, senior privileges, college applications, job interviews, college acceptance, the Prom, Graduation . . . We think of all these things when we find ourselves on the threshold of our new lile. But, as we leave Madison for the last time as students, we think of those traditions we have upheld, and those we have created. If we visit Madison again in the years to come, we will find the old and the new traditions, and we will remember them for all time. 42 Cheryl Anderson Bible Club—2. Junior Class Being Juniors this year, our biggest responsibility has been the sponsorship of the Junior-Senior Prom in May. With money from the Junior play, the Breakfast Club, and the award from the SPTA Membership Drive, we produced one of the finest proms that Madison has ever had. As we look back over the past year, we have many memories that will be carried with us in the future. Organizations Organizations make up a very important part of the time we spend in school. 1 hey provide us with the opportunty to develop leadership qualities and to perform many community services. School life is greatly enriched by extra-curricu¬ lar activities. 1 his year, drives and projects under¬ taken by the various organizations have added interest to our school life and have promoted school spirit. Ill At J ames Madison, the Student Cooperative Association (SCA) is the coordinating influence for all student activ¬ ities. The entire student body has membership in th is Association. Through the SCA, the student body is af¬ forded an opportunity in self-government and a channel through which it can improve student-faculty relations. The governing body of the SCA is the Council. This Council is composed of the four elected SCA officers, the President’s Cabinet, and the homeroom, club, and class presidents. It is this body which initiates and plans the major SCA projects such as International Week, the Mardi Gras Dance, and the Pencils for Pakistan, Wel¬ fare, and Magazine Drives. By taking advantage of the opportunities offered by the SCA, such as International Week, Madison students are helping to make their school a leader in Northern Virginia. August saw a flurry of activity as we prepared for our second marching season. A totally new concept in field marching was introduced by Mr. Yohe, and Madison’s band soon became proficient, to the delight of spectators and performers alike. With the opening of school and the first game, it was not uncommon to see and hear us rehearsing during and after school. The Homecoming Game repre¬ sented the perfection developed by the band. During the course of the year the band participated in several parades. We placed second and third in them, and our majorettes took a first place. February saw the Warhawk Band out marching in competition with bands from several states in the George Washington’s Birthday Parade. This same month saw the advent of the All-State Band Competition held at J.E.B. Stuart High School. Spring saw the presentation of the last concert of the year, the Spring Con¬ cert, which was thought by many to be a fitting close to the season. We participated in several parades, tak¬ ing first place in the Vienna Hallowe’en Parade, and third place in the Fall Parade at Annandale. We also entered the Falls Church parades, and the George Washing¬ ton Day Parade in Alexandria. Several of us were awarded honors for our twirling ability. The Madison majorettes lead the marching band on to the field during halftime. 132 Pep Club Under the guidance of Miss MacEachron, the Pep Club has contributed a great deal toward the fine spirit our school has shown throughout the year. Among our numerous projects were the decoration of goal posts before each football game, sale of crepe paper for cavalcades, sponsorship of the annual powder-puff football game, and participation in the Christmas Welfare Drive Christmas Dance. We made our goal the con¬ tribution of the final incentive which made 1962 Madison’s best sports year. First Row: Sandy Timme, Treas.; Sylvia Downs, Pres.; Carol Jennings, V. Pres.
