0911 QBIII' 0911111 In modern American thought, there is a battle being waged which is as ancient as thought itself. There are those who think that nothing may be considered true unless it can be proven by a practical experiment. There are others who feel that ideals and ideas are sufhcient unto themselves, and that their mental existence is proof of their being. Al- though one might not be acutely aware of this con- troversy, its reverberations outside the domain of philosophy are very evident, especially in a student's attitude toward knowledge. Under the present system of high school educa- tion, there are certain requirements that the majority of the students must meet. The most common of these is the required book list for English classes. The question is not should we accept these lists as valid, but how are we to go about selecting books for ourselves. It is all very well to be told that there are certain pieces of literature with which every normal high school graduate should be familiar. However, it is obvious that these lists are only sug- gestions of a seemingly limitless number of books worthy of our interest. Which ones should we read now? The masterpieces ? Contemporary works? Henry James? Theodore Dreiser? Sinclair Lewis? How do we decide? Whom do we consult? If we have patience, we try to discover for ourselves the masters of the pen. Our method is to taste everything that literature has to offer. We will read Plato. We will read Kerouac. Naturally some of the writing will enthrall us, while some will inexplicably bore us. We will set up our own standards of beauty, truth, and art. We will base it on emotion, ideals, whims, and prejudices. We will listen to music and know it is beautiful, although never in our lives will there be total agreement on what is beauty. However, that we as students are given the op- portunity to face the problem is of great impor- tance. We cannot go through life with a list of things to read, to do, to say. We must be given the chance to decide for ourselves. We must be prodded into the realms of independent thought. Stefanie Yanofsky
