Sv. CE. 09. An active, functioning student government has many values-the development of respect for people of other races, religions and backgroundsg the ability to work with othersg the opportunity to develop sound leisure time interests. We could say, then, that the most important benefit of student government is practical training for democratic citizenship. Its effectiveness should be judged merely in terms of the extent to which it develops civic competence in its pupils. What pupils gain planning and operating their own activi- ties is more important than the concrete results of these activities. With all these apparent benefits, it is a bit puzzling to note that student government does not have the complete support of the pupils. A characteristic Let john do it attitude is, of course, the drastic result. Although We are being graduated and will no longer take part in high school government, we must be wary in the future, of allowing others to do our share. We must realize that these evils are present in our society of today. We must do everything in our power to eradicate undemocratic tendencies. Eli Segal
