Perhaps the parallel with a circus, which you have aclopted as your theme for this yearbook. is at least as close. Certainly life will bring you a rather confusing variety of experiences, some of them gay, some of them serious. Let us hope that the balance between the two types of experiences is a good one, ancl that you clo not meet an unctue number of sad situations. Nevertheless, it would be childish to expect unctiiuteci enjoyment from the future. Equipping oneself with the knowledge of sicilis necessary to earn a living and to carry on normal family life is the goal toward which ati of your schooling and all of your development have contributed. As true Madisonians, you will undoubtedly fulfill the high hopes that we of the faculty have for you. Sincerely yours, MAX NEWFIELD Principal MISS ZEHNER MR. BROOKS Dean of Girls Dean of Boys GRADE ADVISERS was B1sHoFF MR. POSNER Miss TAYLOR TO THE CLASS GF JANUARY, 1955 Now that you have reached your goal, that much coveted Madison diploma, we, vour Grade Advisors extend to you our most sincere congratulations and best wishes for a bright and happy future. Our satisfaction in your success is almost as great as your own because we lilce to feel that we have helped to adjust your difficulties and to smooth your way. We now too that you are setting out upon a road that will not always he as straight and well laid out as the one you have traveled throughout your school years. At times the going will he rough. Vvhen those times come, it is our hope that you may haxe iaith and courage, a talent for laughter and the ability to see greatness in And so dear young iollcs, au revoir. Clear slcies, bright weather, long and wonderful yearsl lxiay God laless you, everyone. Sincerely, EUNICE Biscuor ALICE QUINN MARY TAYLOR Dear Grade Advisors, Now that our High School days are fast drawing to a close, we hegin to realize the worlc that you have had to do in order to prepare us for the long-awaited day. When we entered as Freshman, the terms. two year groups, three year groups. plan sheets, and option cards were just a maze oi confusing phrases. Without your lcindness, guidance and everlasting patience we could not have achieved our goal. Now as we leave Nladison and enter into a new life we hope that we may prove ourselves worthy of the encouragement which you have shown us. Above all, the entire class wishes to thank you for malcing our High School years so memoralale. CLASS or JANUARY '55 S. G. O. OFFICERS kt, R ,W . , , R F , . ' wx -'ff' i s i awk f -me F. M1 A1m.as.Q, A 1312.57 SOP THROUGH 'I FROSH OUR FIRST YEAR UNDER THE BIO TOP: lt was really a three-ring circus, with us wandering in utter confusion from ring to ring. Here the gaudy Go-Cietters, there the liashy Boosters, all rigged out in jaclcets and sweaters hlazing their school emlulems. They stood out like guiding beacons. Guiding us to what? VVe listened and learnedl The long sleep was over: extracurricular activities had been revived. Nlusic Filled the air. It was our liirst Sing. Vve were a gorgeous color-wheel. hut we could not compete with the sophomores' lorilliant Uselling of lVladison. Alasl VVe came in only third. But how clever of us-there was a fourth place we could have filled. And then it was Spring, and we were great hig Second Termers, operating our concession at the lvlardi Gras. Vvhat tunl This was the term, too, when the S. G. O. turned into financial wizards and arranged for Century Theater discounts. Blue jeans were also discounted that year and lxfladison girls went all feminine. Thus our first hig year came to a memorable close. Q X OUR SECOND YEAR UNDER THE BIO TOP: Time pranced on and we prancecl with it, out to the Golden West. nvvestward Holm was our Sing theme that year, and we climhed up a notch to second place. Life was a circus, all right. Our loaslcethall team that season played in the liinals tor the division championship. To celebrate this happy event a victory dance was held, which was a roaring success. Once more music lilled the air, as the music department gave an un' equalled Spring performance. ul lilce lice, 'Stevenson lor President were the cries uttered hy Nladison students as well as by millions of other Americans. The Presidential election was an event which occupied our minds for many months. Under the new S. G. 0. administration, slcating parties were inaugurated. Ding-a-lingl What, no warning hell? No, came a cry from the center ring. From that time on, one hell ended the period. Seasonale was something new to us, and we enjoyed every minute ol it. All Circus acts were suspended for summer activityl i YEARS ,. ff'lfffi's W , JUNIOR 'XI v ella OUR THIRD YEAR UNDER THE BIG TOP: ll n IN Baclc with our summer tans, we were eager to put the show baclc on the 5 ugmlm W road. We were able to reach this goal with our Sing presentation ol I lmill H ulxfladison Goes Cvrazyf' But oh those Seniorsl Again we were only second 0 W best. The judges were impressed with their U0vernight Stay at lvladisonfi l-iving up to the campaign promises, our S. G. O. administration brought to lVladison the much anticipated GAMERAMA, which was an impressive display ol athletic ability on the part of all Nladison students. Spealcing ol athletes, lVladison's baseball team brought home the baseball .f:'-T551-i X championship. The credit goes to coach VVunderlich, lor his able supervision. L? A A new lad introduced into lwladison was the rustling, bustling, billowing, can-can petticoat. Snealcers were not only worn by the girls in gym classes, ii' 2 but also in the halls and classes. ygiglfzf Our music department gave a prolessional rendition ol the popular operetta Vagabond King. This show was an overwhelming success. The Y scenery which added its professional touch, was done with compliments of the art department. The Circus closed once more, this time for summer alterationsl OUR LAST YEAR UNDER THE BIG TOP: The grand Finale opened with a bang - literally, as well as metaphorically. Hammers crashed, and windows moved, lloors came up, and the bancl played on. The school name was officially changed--Bedlam High we called it. j Our Sing this year is as great as always. This being our last year our theme is Hon the Highway. lt is typically reminiscent ol all the happy hours spent at lxfladisonians lavorite recreation center, Kings Highway. Vve were no sooner settled in our senior official classes, when senior dues. hats and jewelry helped us to empty our poclcets. Loolcing baclc over the years, we feel a little sad to have to leave lxfladison, but new adventures and experiences are belore us, in what may be considered the most important show ol all. But as seniors, despite our four years of laughter and sorrow, lailure and success, we lind ourselves on the doorstep to graduation, one step further is the open door to luture success. All the games We have thrilled to have been sparlced by many outstanding athletes. Qne of tVladison's greatest stars was Frankie King, a superior man on the basketball court. All will agree it was breathtaking to see Frankie dribble down the court. Nlilce Vveltman, now on his way to becom- ing a successful ballplayer was a great asset to our team. There have been many other bright lights in lVladison's past, too numerous to mention. Even those who have not been active participants in team play have spurred Madison on with their tremen- dous backing and spirit. The history of our teams have varied, showing both victories and defeats. Now to tell about our achievements on the lielpd. The Nloslceteers supervised by the superior coaching of Jammie Moskowitz are 'continuously showing great form on the court. For three con- ' K avi i, xt' N . secutive seasons, since we entered lxfladison the Highwaymen have landed a berth in the playoffs. Une team we can really be proud of, is the Vvundermen, coached by Artie Vvunderlich. The team sparlced by its co-captains Stuie Levine and Bennie Galante showed superior playing through- out last season. With this they brought a revela- tion to Madison by winning the tirst city champion- ship for our school since 1927. ln the third ring of our circus, we find our foot- ball team. Previously the black and gold was coached by Sam and Mike Torgan. This year under the leadership ol .lerry Edwards. they are looking forward to a well-played season. Although not as famous, Nladison has several other teams including the Bowling, Track and Tennis teams. We are sure all lxfladisonians will always remem- ber the pleasant moments we spent cheering our teams on to victory. The requirements included attendance at school functions, service credit, grades, general appearance, attitudes at the interviews and, for boy applicants, a term of service as a guard. The Boosters have annual charity drives and run the roller slcating parties. All their undertakings have been successful in the past. it was decided this term that the Boosters must attend four out of six football games. The Boosters meet under the leadership of Richie Felder, President: Claudia Riess, Vice Presidentg Terry Schuster, Secretary, and Sue Kaufman, Treasurer. Miss Home is the faculty advisor of this group. BRUCE LEDERMAN GO-GETTERS During the cessation of extra-curricular activities in 1950. Go-Getters was discontinued. It was re-organized in 1951 by lVlr. Krinslcy, who had previously been laculty advisor. The members' chief function is selling ticlcets to all sporting events. The Go-Getters attend all Nladison games. They are often challenged to intramural baslcetball games against the Boosters and other school clubs. Parties, swims and dances with other school organizations are among their private activities. There was a change in faculty advisors when Mr. Krinslcy said good-bye and Miss Salit toolc over the chores. The olilicers are: President, Norman Kurtz: Vice President, Irene Bandolilcg Secretary, Carole Adler: and Treasurer, Bob Davis. BRUCE LEDERMAN FURMAN HONOR GIRLS Honor Girls was founded twenty years ago by Miss Lillian Mcconville. The purpose of Honor Girls is to set examples of fine athletes and worlcers lor the other students to follow. They assist the gym teachers greatly. Sports are not the only things that these girls excel in for they are also Fine students. The present faculty advisor is Miss Tebbe, and the officers this term are: President. Dorothy Bianchinig Vice President, Blanche Kaufman: Secretary, Roberta Rome: and Treasurer, Lois DeLara. For this term the Honor Girls have planned a Play Day, in which tive Broolclyn High Schools send six of their top Honor Girls to partalce in games and dances at lVladison. It is quite thrilling to watch from the football stands the slim girls twirling away with their hatons. At the laaslcethall games one has the pleasure of seeing the routines of hoth our boy and girl Cheerleaders, in action. These two cluhs really glorify the hlaclc and gold of our school which will soon hecome our Alma lvlater, and they malce Madisonians proud that they are a part ol this lestivity.
