IINTI-IROIDUIQTIION Another four years in the glorious history of James Nladison has unfolded. With it has gone many great memories. Some of the most wonderful have been recorded in the field of sports. Long will we remember the figure of Frank Torre -- one of Madison's greatest baseball players, pitching no-hit ball . . . and the tremendous roar that greeted the final buzzer of the Far Rockaway grid game, with the scoreboard telling of the great upset, MADISON 25: FAR ROCKAVVAY 20. Vvho can forget Captain Fred Lane, at the Basketball Dance, introducing the lwladison basketball team, division champions, or the baby-faced star of the hoop- sters, Frankie King? Yes. the past four years have certainly been great ones in Black and Gold ath- letics. VVin, lose or draw, James Madisori is and always will be a name to respect. MADISON BASKETBALL 1951-52 was a season in which basketball highlighted the sports scene as Niadi- son capped the Brooklyn P.S.A.L. Division Il crown. Led by its sensational scoring ace, Frankie King, Madison ran up a string of 14 consecutive victories to earn a playoff position in the borough eliminations. Although beaten by Boys High, the Black and Gold nevertheless proved itself to be one of the finest aggregations ever assembled by Coach Jammy Moskowitz. A will to win combined with Fiery hustle and aggressiveness enabled Madison to provide the school with its first champion- ship team since the 1943 season. This was not a team composed of individual ball- players: it was a well-balanced, closely knit unit concerned mainly with team victory, not individual glory. Jammy lVloskowitz's 1-ive featured a blazing fast break on offense, backed up by a sterling defense, limiting opposition to a scant 44.6 points a game. This proved to be the best defensive record in Division Il competition. in addition, Madison ranked third in team scoring with an average of 54.5 points per ball game. Frankie King broke all existing Madison scoring records as he rolled up a total of 260 points in P.S.A.L. competition while also producing a record breaking 30 points in one ball game. Quite a feat lor a 15 year old sophomore. Backing up King in the scoring department were Roy Kieval with 129 points, Fred Lane with 126, and Milt Winawer with 110. This combination, along with King, was one of the most dangerous offensive units in the league. Greatly contributing to the effectiveness of the team were four seniors, of whom we can well be proud: Fred Lane, Johnny Graziadei, Stu Sperling, and Donald Bender.
