DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION THe cwv OF NEW YORK JAMES MADISON HIGH SCHOOL aeoeonn Avenue AT QUENUN RoAo BROOKLYN 29. NEW YORK PruNclPAL 1-ELE MAX NEWFIELD N16 1- G L 40400 OE June 27, 1951 To the Boys and Girls of the Class of June 1951: Your adoption of a nautical theme for your Hlogn makes it mandatory for me to point out the parallel between your four years in Madison and a long voyage. Passengers on such an occasion look forward to debarkation with the pleasures of anticipation, the certainty of novelty, and some element of anxiety regarding the unknown. Their recollection of dances, parties, and games, and of friendships formed en route are vivid. Occasional bouts of mal de mer and other unpleas- antnesses have already receded into the remote and half-real. So you, at graduation time, find yourselves with mingled sensa- tions of relief and incipient homesickness. In retrospect, there will be thousands of happy moments at Madison that merge into the background of your memories. Associations that have been formed here will tend, in some cases, to weaken, or to lapse into vague and infrequent revivals. Others will constitute the permanent friendships that give adult life much of its vitality and meaning. with respect to your relations with the faculty, you will pro- bably discover that your offhand judgments, based upon classroom experience, undergo considerable modification with the passage of time. Teachers who lack smoothness and diplomacy may later appear to you to have been among the most valuable in their influence upon you. You will often find that your most vivid recollections derive, not from well-organized lessons or elaborate projects, but from chance remarks or apparent irrelevancies that you scarcely noted at the time. Those of us who have joined up with the good ship Madison for more than a four-year spell regard each class, as it graduates, as carrying with it a share of the hopes and aspirations that we cherish for our charges. The fine records that you make at college, in business, or in the services renew our contentment with the essential worthwhileness of a teacher's vocation, whatever society may regard as sufficient monetary compensation. We enjoy your return visits, and your other contacts with the school and its activities. Godspeed and happy voyagingl Sincerely urs, N ff-:LID 'lfilbqgq MAX NEWFIEID, Principal
