However, the passing of a quarter of a century of a schools existence can have for you only hearsay or secondfhand significance. Many of your teachers can hlithely refer to events of a quarter-century ago, or even longer, with the direct and sharpened recollection of one's earlier life that comes with passing years. The privilege is one you will undoubtedly find pleasure in exer- eising regarding the present, when another txventy-live years have rolled hy. We of the faculty hope that your sentiment toward your school will have more than surface meaning. We are confident that it will live on, hased on the durable human contacts that you have made, on the friendships that you have huilt up, and on the sense of having shared in a meaningful common enterprise. It seems as though it took place yesterday, when, in reality, almost four years have passed since we first entered lVladison's gates and care. How can we ever forget our Freshman Year at the best school in Brooklyn? As we were escorted into an auditorium, which seemed large enough to swallow us up, Cand which, we were sure, was there for the aforefmentioned purposeb we Hfreshiesn, with our newly-polished public school graduation pins, told ourselves we weren't in the least bit nervous, and we werenit-hardly. After all, this high school is a blessing, we thought, as we slept late in the mornings and groped our ways home in the dark every night. Loaded down with lunch baskets, program cards, and college requirement lists, we arrived for our first school day. Qur new teachers greeted us with delaney cards. Though there were directions on the card as to the way to be Hlled out, each teacher seemed to want to improve on them, and for every class, the card had to be filled out differently. That didn't bother us though-this was a great school. We had looked forward to freedom and five minutes for chats between classes, but we found ourselves hardly able to hike from the first to the fifth floor classrooms and get to the door before that dratted bell rang, and we began the tramp downstairs for late passes. ln our officials we were told that we must subscribe if we wished to be regarded as good citizens of the school communityl'-so, we subscribed. l believe we freshmen must have supported the G.O., Highway, Madisonian, PTA., and other school functions with our earnestly offered dues. Sports events? Was there a football game that we missed? Uur first assembly on February l5, with Mr. Blumstein, proved to be an interesting one as we learned of traffic rules Chow to distinguish an UpH stair- way from a Down D and the school organization. Vifith the Howers that may bloom in Mayw came the Dramatic Society production Taming of the Shrewf' which we all hastened to attend. When September rolled around, with our report cards in our hands, we entered our new official rooms, holding high hopes for ourselves as Upper Freshmen. We tossed away our First Term Grade Pins Qon which, incidentally, we had changed the l to a 4 with India lnkb, and got ready to start a clean, new, fresh slate. Nothing impressed us more, T venture to say, than our first attendance at the Candlelight Ceremony in the auditorium, for thc lnstallation of S.C.O. officers. Following up, the next big event was the first dance of the term, a llalloween Dance. As we walked along the halls, we began hearing, Tickets for the big shown or Get your tickets to the Varsity , and it soon became evident that a new presentation was under way. Sure 'nuff It turned out to he equal to one of liroadwayls-talmost?. You Can't Take It With You proved to be perpetually hilarious and how can we ever forget those Friday or Saturday nights when we attended the performance. We never could find our way about the school, nor did we discover any use for those pureliasecl Gym Spotsu and Hlllevator Passesn, but enjoying it immensely, we spent our Freshman Year, which seems, now, to have taken to wings and llown away. H., M-121 5 1Ta. lE.fHlA9Sl'1lHh juivioas Somehow we managed to pass our first regents examinations and enter our junior year. lt was a spring term and we all looked forward to seeing the annual varsity show which was to be The Importance of Being Earnestn. On April Fools Day we all laughed heartily at the Mad Highway which carried a report by an eminent psychiatrist that all psychopaths are lovely. As we looked around the school we discovered that Madison had two new shops and that the student government had a new cabinet system. VV e knew spring had officially arrived when we began hearing about the first Spring Carnival and the practice sessions of the football team under their new coach, A1 Caruso. After learning that our baseball team had finished in third place we rushed to buy season tickets to all their games so that we could go see a Dodger game at Ebbets Field Cand be excused early from sehooll. The summer vacation was approaching and the last two weeks in june were spent in intensive worry for the regents exams. Soon after our retum to school in September we noticed many students wearing strange signs bearing the word Sing . We soon learned that the Sing was to be a contest among the four years and the winning year would be pre- sented with a plaque. Many of us worked hard on our theme, A Musical VVedding of B 8a C , and were very sad when we only took third place in the final judging. But we took our loss graciously and started preparing for the next Sing',. All artists were working hard at this time trying to win the I-lighway's contest for a new flag. The flag, which was chosen near the end of the term appeared for the first time in the last issue. The football team was also working hard and for the first time in many years had a chance to play a night game at Ebbets Field. One Thursday morning many of us had the honor of hearing Harold Russel tell about his war experiences and how he came to get a part in The Best Years OE Qur Livesn. It was one assembly period that will remain in our memories for a long time. Another interesting event that took place in the auditorium was the General Electric Show which revealed many of the marvels of modern electricity. It was during this year that the Freedom Train came to Brooklyn and his- tory teachers chose volunteers to go see the train, while many others went because they wanted to see for themselves the documents that had played such an important part in shaping our country's history. Madisonls girl-conscious boys were happy to learn that their chances of getting a date were fairly good since out of the four thousand nine hundred students in the school there were nine more girls than boys. As our junior year neared an end we all felt just a little older and a little more mature because of our numerous experiences, and we looked forward with great anticipation to our hnal year in high school. He was faced with a group of inexperienced players whom he soon converted into a well oiled team. The first game of the season saw Madison set back Midwood 19-6. The Golden Tornados' good fortune then took a decided turn for the worse. They lost to Erasmus 19-6, and Tech overran them in their first night game in ten years 20-6. The Quentin Roaders held Tilden to a score- less tie. New Utrecht tied the Black and Gold 18-18, with a touchdown in the closing minutes of the game. ln their next two games the Quentineers were defeated by Lafayette and Boys High. Tay Erench, lack VVilliams and A1 Hutt were the standouts in the baclcfield. Ciccia, hflalm and Schwager were the bulwarlis of the line. Madison opened the season with one of the strongest and heaviest lines in the city. The Golden Tornado got off to a fast start, heating Midwood 12-6. A highly favored New Utrecht team was next to face the Black and Gold, but Madisons line refused to yield and the game wound up in a scoreless tie. Next we faced our traditional rival Erasmus in an exciting contest which saw the Black and Gold go down to defeat by a score of 18-7. The Tornado returned to its winning ways against Tilden with a thrilling 6-O victory. Madison succumbed to a powerful Engineer squad in its only night encounter of the season by a score of 26-1 3. Boys High crushed the Quentin Roaders 28-65 we were completely outplayed in this game. Next to face Madison was Lafayette. The Golden Tornado fell to a stunning defeat 16-O. After eleven years in the clutches of Lincoln, Madison finally triumphed, beating their traditional rival 12-7, to close out thc season. RONALD A. FRIEDBIAN 55? YM 2 W AZ 52 M f? This squad won the Brooklyn borough championship, ran up a nineteen-game winning streak, and went as . -15 far as the city finals before bowing to Cleveland. I This marked the first time that a team had gone fs -1 W through the official season undefeated. 'lVVhitey Eilertsen and joe Torpey emerged as the stars of this .3 great team. joe is now with Mobile in the Southern '. Association, a Brooklyn Dodger farm team. 1947 was slated to be another peak year for the Black and Gold. However, early-season injuries to Eilertsen and to center-fielder Paul Severino forced and Frank Torre, the team made a mid-season recovery which h l jfzjb Mr. Wunderlich's boys off to a comparatively slow start. Sparked by D an finish among the leaders. The 1948 edition of the Wundermen likewise an season ' s one of the favorites to capture the championship crown. Th ne-up, as in t rea , was powerfladen, with such sluggers as lrlane, Torre and Sal 0 ivio ' O the way. johnny Costello at third, Dinino and Ferrare in j e ou e , and Young and Litman in the field were some of the other bright . 1 the starting nine. Arty Applebaum did the major part of the hurling ough he pitched master- fully in several of the league contests, his general unsteadiness sealed the Black and Colds chances of finishing at the top. I 1949 saw the Quentin Boaders among the best in the borough for the fourth consecutive year. The team remained in contention for the title until the very last game of the season. Frank Torre, alternating between first base and the pitching mound, once more proved to be the sparlvplug of the squad. He hit a lusty .430 at the plate and compiled a 440 pitching record. Even more heart- warming to Coach VVuntlerlich were the feats of Sid Kraus, a freshman. By playing a line game at shortfstop tlirougliout the season and by csttiblishing himself as an effective lead-off batter, Sid has given all the assurance that he will hlossoin into one of the top perlloriners on the high school tliainond. In THE WALLMEN ln '47 after the teams settled down Madison found herself in second place close on the heels of Lafayette. Due mainly to the fine play of newcomer George Goldberg the team was able to finish in second place. The l48 aggregation although inexperienced surprised everyone in the league by finishing the season in a deadlock with Lincoln and Tech for first place. We went down before a strong Lincoln squad in the playoffs and had to be contented with second place. The standouts of the team were Kroll, Klase- witz and Goldberg. The '49 campaign was an exact duplicate of the previous one. Once again we finished in a three-way tie for first place and lost to Lincoln in the playoffs. Kroll, Goldberg and I-Iuriwitz paced the team with their continuously fine play. TEN PINS In recent years, Bowling has been becoming more and more prom- inent. This is not due merely to the fact that there are a half dozen trophies in our second floor cabinet, but is due mainly to the efforts of Messrs. Sternberg and Miller to build up a strong team and seeing to it that it gets a maximum amount of publicity. ln the fall season of 1948 the team captained by Bill Waller was nosed out by a very strong F. K. Lane aggregation. Madison was tied with Tech for second place. A playoff was arranged and with a minimum of difficulty, Madison won 5-O, thereby finishing in second place. The Spring season told a different story with Keglers jumping out into the lead and never being headed. This was due mainly to thc sterling bowling of Bill Waller, Artie Hubcrfeld, Norm VVeiner, Bay Cooney, Hcrby Gold and Bernie Gold. VVe won the championship by five points. This season the team minus the serv- iccs of Bill Wtillei', will be captained by Art llubcrfcld. Learning to respect the judgment and wisdom of our teachers, who have taught us what years of experience has given them. We hope this added knowledge will help us become better men and women in the world of tomorrow. It seems like only yesterday, we entered james Madison High School as freshmen-full of hopes and expectations and a little in awe of the upper stu- dents. It didnit take us very long to realize that we had to become interested and active in school activities in order to get the most of what school had to offer. And so we started trying out for various clubs and organizations. ln this experience we learned to accept the knowledge of defeat if we were rejected- or the pride and thrill of being accepted as a member. We became active in school papers and magazines, student government, school sports, etc. In each club or organization we joined, we met new people and found new experiences. We have made many friends at school and have spent four wonderful years in the process of growing up. Time may dim the faces of some of these students and teachers we have worked and played with, but the memories of all the adventures and responsibilities we have shared will never be forgotten. Some' day, we will look back on the pages of this book and be able to recall the happy experiences that once were ours. To most of us this school is more than just a place where we had to study and work-we played and shared in its activities always finding pride in a job well done. Now it is time to say goodfhye-it isn't easy-there is a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes as l hid ll1ll'L'XVCll lo lkladison. Clxnoi, lxl'l'ZlNlIlf.lX g, Bfaokz-HA.
