va... a..a.f.f To the Boys and the Girls of the Class of january 1949: Your choice of the theme-name of The Forty-ninersn is not I am sure, mere- ly a Hip use of a slick label. It is a name that carries over-tones and implications into our own time from its century-old point of origin in American history. There is first the motivation of the original Forty-niners, the get-rich-quick impulse of greed for gold. I trust that this urge, no less potent today, is not a major factor in your program for living. Then there are hardships and hazards that the transcontinental pioneers underwent in their quest for wealth. Casualties were high, and incidence of disappointments heavy. If such trials fall to your lot, let them be assumed in a nobler cause. Our country and society offer you treasures to seize that cannot be converted into bankable funds, but which will pay off in the more durable media of full living and the realization of personal resources. Do not content yourself with the mere fool's gold of selfish turns. At the same time, do not omit to plan for personal independence and security. Avoid the fate of the Hgure in Emerson's poem Days, Who, offered, BREAD, KINGDOM, STARS, AND THE SKY THAT HOLDS THEM ALL . . . hastily took a few herbs and apples.
