Because of these still unsettled conditions, Uncle Sam is maintaining selective service. Constantly our eighteen year old boys are being drawn away from the schools. These boys are not here to share our ordeals and happiness. However they are with us in spirit and but for the frothings of a late demoniacal World would have been at our sides. They are our friends and companions, and until recently our schoolmates. This is their graduation as well as our own, and it is only fitting that we bring them back by dedicating this space to re- acquaint ourselves with them. Melvin Birnbaum ..,. ...... We bought notebooks and lots of clean paper-and our allowances dwindled. The teachers didn't treat us like freshmen. In fact, they took it for granted that we'd spend two hours on a history assignment. Somehow we managed this, even though the sophomores shook their heads dole- fully when we told them which math teachers we had. They say that into every life a little rain must fall. But they never said anything about a hurricane. Re- member just when we wanted to look smooth for our first Madison dance, and our hair went limp. And now we felt rather worldly and im- portant as we walked down the main hall, better known as 'Lbow-tie boulevard. Thus Madison has an- nexed the city championship after twenty-five years in the second division. Auns, long- legged veteran of three cam- paigns, opened up with our 19 point attack, by scoring a perfect onezy. Lincoln's Stutsmx and Hammersplts then went wild and scored twelve straight between them. At the half, Lincoln led us twelve to one. It looked bad, but coach Spachie gave the boys a pep- talk which sent them off and winging in the final period. Grubaum began with a twozy and a jump-threezy and worked all the way up to sevenzy before he was stopped. Strum followed with a fine corner-shot and leap on the eightzy and continued right on to the end with a few Lincoln goals in be- tween. Auns took over from there and missed on the threezy when he fouled out. The game was won, how- ever, and a final splurge by Lincoln, which saw them re- peat a double jump-threezy fmarking the first time this has ever been done in the annals of the gamej could not quite overhaul us. Auns, Strum and Grubaum were carried off the pavement as heroes and their feats will long live in the annals of Madison's sports achieve- ments. 1 Alumnuses Return By Cy A. FREEZE For the past two weeks, the school has been celebrat- ing the 205th birthday of James Madison by present- ing at the assemblies several alumni who have achieved fame in the world. At the first assembly, Howard Rayfiel, Governor of the State of New York, Milton Lesser, author of the best-seller, Life Can Be Sunny-Smith, and Jerome Sachs, well know comedian, addressed the student body. Governor Rayflel explain- ed how the government works and what one needs to become a successful poli- tician. The main prerequi- sites are the ability to talk and perseverance, he said. Mr. Lesser read from one of his books and explained the art of table golf. You start on the green with six holes and 15 balls to sink. One takes his favorite cfly- uibje and proceeds to put the balls in the holes. That is Mr. Lesser's formula for success. Mr. Sachs entertained with a few of his new jokes in- cluding, Why does a chicken cross the road? A. To get to the other sideg and Who was that woman I saw you with last night? A. That was no woman, that was my wife. The student body was de- lirious. At the second assembly, Gloria Berk, star at the Met- ropolitan, Barry Schwartz, Congressman, and Wally Sturm, coach of the R-PU basketball team. Miss Berk sang the hit songs of the new show, Penn- sylvania, The Hot-foot with the Singe on the Top and Pennsylvania. Miss Berk was taught under the swooning baton of Frank Sinatra. Mr. Schwartz told how he recently broke the record for filibustering by two months, three weeks, two days, four hours, seven minutes and twenty-three seconds. He's proud of that one, Mr. Sturm has outdone the tirehorse tactics of Rhode Island State with jet pro- pelled passing, and para- chute shooting. His team, averaging seven foot ten drops the ball from the stratosphere attached to parachutes and let the ball float down for the score. The assemblies were fol- lowed by the Report To The Nation address given by President Harvy Peck the second. Trading On Madison's Stock Exchange Trading opened briskly to- day with gym spots gaining two points, but the Dobbs- .Iones Averages showed con- clusively that all Seniors were selling furiously in an attempt to water the market before they graduate. Ele- vator passes lost three to three and a half because of the influx of two new opera- tors who each have twenty- twenty vision and a vicious' tempier. It is no longer funny when the fountain I have fixed to squirt becomes ob-i solete because they shootl water down the person's neck and this is much more effi- cient. They also water all the plants thus depriving me of my serious credits each term. What should I do? Signed, All Wet Editor: The water pistol is outmoded in this modern age so why don't you keep up with modern scientific im- provements. You can easily clean up this situation by bringing a few seltzer bottles with rechargers. They are more powerful, have a longer range and you can always drink some if you get thirsty. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Dear Sir: Madison must have a very marvelous chess team. I'm firmly convinced of this fact, and not only that-but I know it! You see, I was walking through the halls the other day, when this guy accosts me. Bud, he said, 'Tm a ranking member of the Madison Chess Team. I never lose to anybody. Never- Wanna play me? Yes, I said, because I wanted some relaxation, and besides, I am cutting my trigonometry class. So he pulls out his portable board and ivory pieces and we begin. I never lose, he said. I love the game. Ummm, I answered lugu- briously. Man, he said laconically, 'tAm I gonna beat you bad. I can't lose-and what is more, I'll pull a real intelli- gent plan on you, and have you polished off very fast. Very fast. The pieces were moving now, and he sure was a fine player, Besides, I had only played the game once before. Check, I said. He laughed and moved his king out of danger. He then castled left right over center, and made some real fine moves, beginning with his left bishop near my right knight and his both rooks within proximity of my queen, thus crossing the cen- ter and endangering my flank. He smiled. Check, I said. He frowned. Checkmate, said I, walk- ing away from the best player on a very fine chess team. Sincerely J. M. Rook 5, Wwwf f X Q FRC? VGNMRL V CARY , 1 Awww? There were many instances when We didn't know what to do or where to turn next-unless, of course, We had heard of our Grade Advisor. Your patience was axiomatic, as was your wit and charm. We generally took your advice and more often than not found it to be good. We enjoyed those visits with you to such an extent that at times some of us had too many problems for you. Those, too, were ironed out. You have fulfilled your position of Grade Advisor quite efficiently. More than that, however, you have been a friend, a real human being to us, who could understand and reason with us and make decisions that at times fright- ened us. We would like to thank you, Miss Horne, for the problems you have solved and particularly for your human-ness -and We would like to leave you with the thought that many of us are pictured here in these pages today largely because of your infinitely helpful Work. Mike Torgan was football coach for 20 years, producting 3 borough championships, 2 city championships, and one state championship. With Mike Torgan on the sidelines the 5 Madison football team compiled a record of three losses, one tie, and one win. The initial game of the season saw an inexperienced Madison squad outplayed by a powerful Boys' High team by the score of 12-O. Then, after suffering another defeat by Tech, the Quentin Roaders trounced Tilden 26-7. Arnie Schwartz and Nick Blend scored 20 points. Panagakos scored the last touchdown. The boys of Black and Gold then fought Lincoln to a 7-6 Hrst half. Although the Quentin Roaders lost by the score of 20-6, Buddy Kahn and Arnie Schwartz were the outstanding players in the game. In the third quarter, Buddy Kahn made five tackles in five plays. Arnie Schwartz scored Madi- sonls lone touchdown, but not before five men hit him. Arnie just wouldn't go down. The Black and Gold then fought Lafayette to a 13-13 tie at Ebbets Field. Captain Monte Schussel won individual honors by being named on every all-scholastic team. He did a great job at tackle. Another senior who stood out was Fred Kimmel. Fred hurt his leg in the Tech contest and was forced to remain on the bench for the rest of the season. He was named All-City Center in 1944. Fred, believe it or not, played 60 minutes of every game in 144. Fred hopes to play his college football at Ohio State. I will now run through the rest of the seniors on the team. Ioe Panagakos, Kris Kitsos and Iohnny Burke were the backfield men. Wally Grubman, and Palmeri were outstanding on the line. Many solutions have been proposed but none find any fault with the play of the three graduating members of the squad, Captain Floyd Weiner, Ioe Orns, and VVally Sturm. Weiner throughout the cam- paign displayed skill and team play that are rarely found in a high school player. ln addition to being second highest scorer in the league. Floyd was also an excellent floor man and spark plug. Because of an injury incurred in pre-season practice Ioe Orns was forced to sit out the first four games of the season, the four that were lost. His great value to the team was demonstrated with its resurgence when he was put back to the lineup. Under the boards Ioe was our greatest threat and his spirited style of play often supplied the spark for a Madison victory. Although lVally Sturm was not one of the starting Hve his ability was unquestionable. In his role of sixth man he saw lots of action and always exhibited a great deal of fight on the court. Next year Coach Moskowitz will try to better this seasonls record with a probable starting lineup of Meyers, Saunders, Diamond, Wool- man, and Schwartz. The part of team leader played so adeptly by Floyd Weiner during the past campaign will have to fall upon Licky Meyers. Each year, starting way back in 1943, the Wundermen have con- stantly been the choice to cop baseball's coveted award-a champion- ship. And yet through some ironical twist of fate only the 1943 edition of the Wundermen won the title. It was the great Sid Rosner who chucked the team to the playoffs, losing only in the final, 1-O. The 1946 campaign might well prove to be the very year that the Wundermen have long awaited. The inheld is loaded with veterans, Chouinard and Hochberg control the inital sack 3 Torpey and Kitsos both seem destined to handle the keystone slotsg and Claro, Panagakos and Gibson are around the hot corner. The other pastures are roamed by Severino, Ferrari, Kimmel, Higgins and Kahn. The battery is the most potent of all the positions. Nicky Blend is behind the plate and Eilertsen, Higgins and Morrs comprise the first three pitchers. The team is fast, hits hard, and is strong in the battery department. Of course, only time and Providence can tell whether the Highway- men will be the team to cop the first Brooklyn Dodger trophy award. Among the graduation stars, it is befitting to pay tribute to Ioe Torpey and Christ Kitsos, two all around inhelders. The graduating athletes deserve a great deal of credit for representing the school in every capacity. When the time came to choose a starting line-up, he shrewdly ignored all mediocre upper-classmen and had his team composed of all sopho- mores. Not much in the way of startling play was expected, and no one in this frame of mind was disappointed by the results. Don Harris, Lou Goldman, Al Silverman and Harold Hyman started in the singles matches, and Herb Goldsmith, Sam Benjamin, Larry Klepper and Ansil Marks alternated for the doubles matches. The team lost most of their tournaments, but gained much valuable experience. The following season the teamis prospects looked brighter. Paul Simel broke into the starting line-up to join the veterans, displacing Hyman to doubles by his fine playing. The happy outlook was dimmed however, when it was learnd that Sid Schwartz, one of the countryls top ten boy players, had joined Erasmus, and Len Steiner, almost equal in ability to Schwartz was on Tech's team, the city champs in 1944. The team ended the season with a record of 2 wins against 6 set- backs, to capture fourth place. The record however doesn't tell the whole story. The victories were by the scores of 5-O, and 4-1, quite one-sided. The defeats were not. Against Erasmus, the city champs in 1945, Madison lost 3-2. In this match Harris was overwhelmed by Schwartz 6-O, 6-1, Goldman lost a heart-breaker to Stitchman, Capt. of the Erasmus team, 6-4, 6-4, and Al Silverman 1ost by an almost identical score. Paul Simel and the doubles team came through with victories. Against Midwood it was the same story. Capt. Don Harris lost 75, 6-2, Goldman 6-3, 6-2, Silverman lost the closest match of the season, 6-4, 6-8, 6-4, Simel won easily and the doubles team of Hyman and Benjamin was downed 6-4, 5-7, 6-4. The final score of 4-1 hardly gave a true picture. KENNXS GOL-D MPM S ANGELS x-X NW B RLL ,N-v-up . Q FQ .V - ' f a T' , filfl .2-1. as if My :M L. .- IQ, Iffiif A DPNN5 'A' , 4' , , V, . f . . Lou Goldman will lead a green team with the aid of Red Hyman, the only other remaining veteran. The accent will again be on lower termers with Marvin Shield, Sam Berman and George Shapiro starting. Some seniors who show promise such as Arnie Samuels, Phil Weinstein, Herb Brofsky and Roger Lester wll not be disregarded and may play doubles. The league standings will probably be the same this year as last. When Messrs. Sidney Schwartz, Len Steiner and company Hnally do graduate, there undoubtedly will be a shifting of power possibly in the Black and Gold's direction. BY Lou GOLDMAN Handball Under the tutelage of coach Ioe Rothbart, this year's handball squad hopes to improve its 3 and 3 record of last year, which was gained with an inexperenced group. Iaclc Davis, captain and Wally Sturm are the only two men who are seniors. The rest of the team has Garvin Goodman, Sidney Schuber and Dick Ekmanian as the top starters. Last season's record, being compiled at the hands of staunch veterans from the opposing schools, is very likely to be bet- tered, because of the graduation of many of the stars from these league high schools. It might be a pleasant change to reverse the process and utter a few words of appreciation. Iive enjoyed this grade. When Mr. Weiner left you in my care in the middle of your high school course you accepted your new Grade Advisor with graciousness and open- mindness. You chose fine class and grade ofiicers for me to work with and supplied me with a wonderful oHice squad. The most acrimonious interviews between you and me have ended peacefully and to date I am still on speaking terms with all six hundred and thirty one of you-as far as I know.
