THE CLASS OF JANUARY,194O Dear Friends of the Class of January, nineteen hundred and forty: Please accept my very sincere congratulations upon your graduation. You have every reason to be proud of the work you have accomplislhed for the course you have taken is one that challenges both industry and your intel- lectual ability. lt would be easy to say something pessimistic in this time with the sombre clouds of war hanging black over so much of the world, But l have just returned from a journey which took me over a considerable part of our own glorious country, and such a trip is a tremendous inspiration. The words of our old song, I love thy rocks and rills, thy woods and templed hills , have a new meaning after such an experience. It is your rich inheritance to be able to give your lives to the preservation of this great nation. You will keep faith with the fathers who founded it. You will labor in its sunshine, and if darkness comes, you will keep its beacon burning. Sincerely yours, William R. Lasher My dear Friends- This year we have all been thrilled by our glimpses into the World of Tomorrow. We have stood in awe of the marvels of science and we wonder what will take place in the years to come. Now, you are going forth to take your place in that world and to leave your mark upon it. In high school you have studied many subjects and developed interests which will spur you on to fields of greater endeavor. Extra-curricular activities, too, have played an important part, and the benefits derived from this Uesprit de corps will always be among your happy memories of Madison, lnseparably mingled with your formal education, has been that which is not mentioned in any curriculum-character training. You have acquired, consciously or unconsciously, many fine qualities which cannot be evaluated numerically but which have become a part of your true self. ln everything you do, you will be judged as a person. Your thoughts and actions will be guided by the standard of values which you set for yourself. You will be the citizens of that World of Tomorrow. It is, therefore, a self- incurred obligation to set for yourself a standard of values high enough to make that world a better one by giving yourself to it as a better person.
