People come and people go, In their time they often sow their wild oats as we shall know, They try to find what they will be, But they become what we will see, We will not understand its mean, How can I show you that I know, What we will see is what they have seen. The seniors in the trumpet section leave Mr. Hammer some decent flute players. The class of ’82 can be remembered as excelling in athletics, academics, and school activities. Our memories are more detailed and although many may seem insignificant, they are often the ones that leave lasting impressions. When we first entered JMB in September of 1978 our feelings ranged from fear to awe to utter confusion, afraid of not seeing a familiar face, afraid of the unknown, and afraid of appearing as naive as we really were. We were in awe of the beautiful senior women and the much larger guys. Our confusion ranged from finding our classes in a backward world to figuring out who to sit with at lunch. We started getting our act together with the election of class officers. We elected Scott Wulff president, Beth Beauchamp vice-president, Dana Yaw secretary, Gandie Smith treasurer and Francis Hooks advocate. Mrs. Walters and Miss Vice got the dubious honors of being our advisors and we have been lucky to have their guidance for four years. Our first taste of competition came during Homecoming. We enjoyed making our float more than the judges enjoyed looking at it. We bounced back with a second place in the hall decorating competition. At the end of our first year, we had approximately $300 in our treasury, most coming from our chicken barbeque. We put eveything together in our sophomore year, walking away with almost everything. With Beth Beauchamp as President, Francis Hooks as vice-president, Candi Smith as secretary, Cheri Todd as treasur¬ er, and Charlie Dolbey as advocate; we were first in Homecoming float competition, Christmas hall decora¬ tions and during class competition week, we had the greatest legs and the best leap-frogger. Our class spirit was shown in our two main fund raisers. Our chicken barbeque and rock concert left us with over $1000 in our treasury. Academics grew harder and more time was spent studying. But we could never study enough for Mr. Peterman’s multiple choice tests. In our Junior year, we re-elected Beth Beauchamp and Francis Hooks as president and vice-president and elected Cheri Todd secretary, Tyree Nutter treasurer and Jay Jackson advocate. We got second in both Homecoming float competition and class competition week. Our comedy presentation of Lock, Stock and Lipstick, starring Shelley Rayne and Trey Patt was a huge success. Three members of our class traveled overseas through the American Field Service with Shelley Rayne going to South Africa, Ginny Gourley to New Zealand, and Meg Webster to Brazil. During the Junior-Senior banquet, we found out how the Seniors felt about us. For example, giving Elyn Hogg, Pat Hopkins, Kathryn Levitz and Laurie Cathcart lead boots. Our annual chicken barbeque and class play increased our treasury. Finally we were the Seniors and wondered if the freshmen were in awe of us. The officers for our last year were Beth Beauchamp — president, Charlie Dolbey — vice-president, Dale Shoemaker — treasurer, Terri Rose — secretary, Kathy Gordy — advocate, and Scott Wulff — historian. We handily won class competi¬ tion week with an overwhelming win on All Sports night. Our class play was again a success with Terri Rose, Wayne Kemble, Tracy Clark, Meg Webster, Molly Bicknell, Charlie Dolbey, and Dale Shoemaker, starring in “It Happens Every Summer”. The impression that we have made will fade in the minds of many, but to the members of the Class of ’82, the memories will be lasting and will be a significant part of their lives. We hope that the future will bring to each of us as many good times as we have had in the past four years and that each will achieve the goals that they have set for themselves. It is hard to say good-bye to friends that you have shared so much with — the good, the bad, happy and sad. Time has slipped away quickly. As we go our separate ways we won’t forget the memories and moments we shared together as the class of 1982. 48 SENIOR AWARDS ASSEMBLY Recognition of National Merit Finalists and Commended Students Kim Clouser, Mike Bayline, Steve Couzens, Martha Senkbiel, Shelly Horne, Francis Hooks Math Team Awards Ed Sumstine Recognition of VICA State Finalists Eileen Polk FBLA State and Regional Awards Loretha Melvin, Alice Roberts, Vantine Stallings, Lynnette Faircloth, Jackie Hayward, Sharon Barton, Ronnie Turner, Ricky Vance, Vickie Gale Outstanding member: Ricky Vance State of Maryland Merit Scholastic Awards John Baker, Steve Cousens, Gunnar Gunnarsson, Ellyn Hogg, Ed Sumstine, Lisa Price, Kelly Wycall, Chris Wilson, Dale Shoemaker, Martha Senkibel, Cherrianne Todd, Charles Twilley Recognition of Achievement in Foreign Language Ellyn Hogg — Spanish Martha Senkibel — Latin Julie Payne — French Deca Awards — Tim Timmons, Melanie McWilliams Work Progress — Laurie Wainwright, Paula Smith Recognition — Debbie Mittle Yearbook Award Melanie McWilliams, Lynnette Faircloth Music Awards Piano Nancy Cimino, Rifle Tyree Nutter, John Phillip Sousa Kevin Washington Drama Club Awards Who’s Who in Music — Nancy Cimino, Ricky Vance Acting — Trey Patt Total Theater — Tracey Clark, Ricky Vance Wicomico Women’s Club Award — Nancy Cimino Outstanding Male and Female Athlete Award — Chris Wilson, Mary Beth Wulff Seidel Student Athlete Award — Ellyn Hogg James M. The theme was taken from our class motto “We’ve Only Just Begun”. The Midway Room was decorated in our class colors midnight blue and silver. A gazebo, decorated with live plants and placed in the middle of the room was a perfect setting for pictures. Music for the evening was provided by “Majestic”, a band from Baltimore. The grand march began promptly at 10:00 p.m. The class song “Don’t Look Back” by Boston, was played during the introduction of couples. The Prom ended at 11:30 p.m. Everyone had an evening that will long be remembered. Just Begun FINAL DAY . . . 54 How many times did we have to practice the up and down motions? How many times did the first row of boys mess up? It was all so fun but, yet all so short. Graduation practice was fun and exciting, we all could not wait till the final hour, the final count down. Then it was here before we knew it. The first row of boys finally got their act together and when your name was called, you felt proud and excited. For a very short minute you wanted to let everyone know that you were proud and excited and happy that you finally made it down the long row and that you don’t want to look back at all the tests, homework, and pressure. A new day has broken and we hope to make something of our new life and ven¬ tures and expectations. Linn When there were problems that needed solving or questions that needed answering about different types of writing or lines, who was there to pitch-in and help? Mrs. Mary Jane Linn. Since this is our last year, we thought that it would be nice to leave something from us with her. For all of her time, care, and de¬ votion, we would like to dedicate this Yearbook to her. We take this opportunity to express our appre¬ ciation for her years of advising the staff and making the yearbooks suc¬ cessful. Without her help, the Year¬ book Staff would not have been able to survive. Thank you for every¬ thing, especially for being you. 82 DEDICATES Thomas Bailey I I Best is a word attributed to John Wayne, Babe Ruth, Tom Selleck, A1 Lu- cinder, and the Baltimore Orioles. Ben¬ nett’s Best—can be applied to its cham¬ pionships in football, wrestling, and boys’ track. These are the sports that another “Best” has been associated with. This Yearbook is dedicated to our Best, Mr. Thomas Bailey. He is more than a dedicated teacher and a coach, he is also a friend to the students. This is what Bennett thinks about its Best: “Mr. Bailey was very easy to work with and talk to. What impressed me most was his concern for the kids he worked with (coached). He looked at the total person; not just a guy out on the track.” (Mr. Peterman) “He is one of the best coaches there is. It will be a great loss to Bennett when he retires.” (Hughes Wright) “Without Mr. Bailey’s friendship and acceptance, I probably wouldn’t have made it through my first year of teach¬ ing. He will do anything for anybody if they ask, and he accepts people for what they are. When he was a prize fighter, his nick-name was ‘Terrible Tom.’ He’s an indespensible friend.” (Mr. Dittrich). 83 ADMINISTRATION Lloyd Wescoe, Principal William Burleson, Vice-Principal 84 Daniel Savoy Vice-Principal Irene Niblett, Bookkeeper Tom Bailey Driver Education Joyce Barber Science Department Tamara Brewer Guidance Counselor Cal Burley Guidance Counselor Kathleen Biddle English Department Louella Cane Math Department Faye Bradley Social Studies Department Anna Carey English Department Claudette Cooper Business Department Sara Cox English Department James Cummins Educational Support Program Linda Davis Math Department Patrich Dittrich Social Studies Department Terry Dix Math Department Laszlo Doemeny Language Department Cheryl Doughty Home Economics Department 85 Melody Dubbs Home Economics Department Gary Hammer Music and Band Director Howard Horseman Industrial Arts Department Ruth Epstein English Department Kathleen Hayne English Department Rita Fletcher Science Department Jerdy Heatwole Physical Education Todd Gittings Industrial Arts Department Larry Himes Social Studies Department Cheryl Johnson Business Department Maryjane Linn English Department Claudia Hudson Math Department Alice Loring Resource Department Gertrude Lowe Resource Department M. Susan Fisher Daphne Vaughn Tracy Peek Carol Hackert Tracy Gbb Darlene Malchow Meg Webster _ ‘Guys And Dolls’ Praised By RUTH EPSTEIN SALISBURY - Lady Luck rolled the dice and ft was the audience that won as James M Bennet Senior High School produced “Guys ana Dolls. ” From the first strains of the overture to the closing notes of the finale it was sevens all the w ay as Damon Runyon’s story of the gambling guys and their dolls of New York found an exurberant, talented cast that made lines, songs and dances vibrant and new. There are two love stories in “Guys and Dolls ” One is that of Adelaide, leader of the Hot Box girls, and her elusive fiance of 14 years, Nathan Detroit, the gambler who bets only on a sure thing. Tracy Clark was a beautiful Miss Adelaide whose clear, melodious voice was sweet and tender or brash and belting as the song required Trey Patt, as Nathan, delivered his lines with perfect timing and didn’t miss a laugh. Adelaide’s and Nathan’s duet, Sue Me,’’ was funny, touching and well sung. The second love story is that of Sarah, the Salvation Army reformer, and Sky Materson, who, to win a bet from Nathan, convinces Sarah to accompany him to Havana in exchange for his guarantee of 12 sinners to appear at a Salvation Army meeting. Sarah is a difficult role requiring subtle reactions and rapid changes in personality as Sarah reluctantly falls in love with Sky and then changes from a naive saver of souls to a tipsy, free spirit and back to a repressed soldier. Alden Cavanaugh, as Sarah, did a fine jo6 in th Havana scene with exactly the right tone of voice, delivery and action to communicate release, freedom and, finally, return to repression Charlie Dolbey was a charming Sky whose redemption afthe end of the play was believable The outstanding voice of the evening was that of V ance Campbell As Nlcely-N icely Johnson, Campbell delivered a show- stopping “Sit Down, You’re Rockin’the Boat.’’ Paul Lewis, as Nathan ' s sidekick, Benny Southstreet, created a character that was consistent and humorous The Hot Box Girls, in dances choreographed by Meg Webster, provided delighted, professional spectacles In “A Bushel and a Peck and “Take Back Your Mink.” Guys and Dolls” is a ? ambling show, and all of he gamblers, whether shooting craps singing, dancing, or praying — reluctantly and after their fashion - created an air of excitement and Jov Adding to this were the performances of the large cast Costumes were hand tailored and perfect for each part from the wide, garish ties and pin striped suits of the gamblers to tne beautiful wedding dress worn by Adelaide and the Salvation Army uniforms of the reformers. The 20-piece orchestra, under the direction of Gary Hammer, was excellent, playing with a consistently lively tempo and never once drowning out the singers Ben Keavis. director of “Guys and Dolls and Gary Hammer produced a show of professional quality with talented, serious performers There was no gambling with tins one It was a winner all the way The reviewer is tin English teacher at James M Bennett Senior High School BENNETT’S BEST “Nancy Plays” “Get Down On It” “Bennett’s Beauties” “Charlie and Vernie” “Announcer” “Stacey and Shelley Make Beautiful Music” “Toy Tin Soldier” ACTORS IN THE CROWD . . . Today, the ideals of Roman law and administration survive within the institutions of American govern¬ ment. The magnificence of Rome has traversed time to become embodied in our nation’s capital. Perhaps the most famous of all Roman edifices, the Colosseum, is illustrated on this banner as gradually merging with the image of the Capitol Building, the symbol of American democracy, Just as the waters of the Tiger could thus have Roman ideals been carried by the flow of time. The appropriate headdress of the banner is the traditional insignia of the Tenth Legion of Caesar, a circumsribed Roman numeral X. Finally, the crowning touch is the symbol of the majesty and free¬ dom common to both Rome and Washington—the golden eagle. Martha Senkbeil ’82. 114 Sharlene Mendoza and her award-winning banner. The girls’ team won two of the local indoor meets, and were run¬ ners-up in the other two. Due to the small number of partici¬ pants in several of the indoor events, the success of the teams is best judged in terms of individual performances, where school records in over half of the events were broken. It cannot be measured, For it has no beginning Nor has it an end Yet we measure it. It waits for no one, Yet is always there. It is the past, present and future There is always so much of it, Yet there is never enough. It goes on fast, It never stops The present becomes past, And the future becomes present. Use your time wisely Don’t take it for grantd In time, your time will come to an end. (Used by permission of Missy Hunt, Class of 85) 169 Flowers by Rachel Flowers for every occasion Quantico Rd. I hope you enjoy working on the yearbook as much as I have. Good luck and thank you all so very much. I really do appreciate all the time and effort that you spent helping out. Thank you.
