Carey with technical direction by C. Benton Reavis. Memories are plentiful whenever a group of peo¬ ple do a show. The cast and crew of Our Town will have many memories, some shared and some personal. We can all remember Michelle Lugassy ' s beautiful voice from the back of the auditorium cooing, Mr. Webb, Mr. Webb ...” and Julie’s feeble attempts to string beans. We may forget where Kevin and Graham left the set, but we’ll never for¬ get the first time that the door opened correctly and how it felt the first night that the people in the cemetery didn’t move. Hot Mama and Brad taught us how to really” kiss and that, we’d better not forget. Remember the sound cues? Oh well, you probably missed them anyway. There were many birthdays during the show, some were cele¬ brated others were not. Let ' s all go to Burger King after rehearsal.” Remember all of this and more makes for the memories that light the corners of my mind. Danny loved his family, respected his friends and devoted his life to God. A member of the J. M. Bennett track team, Danny pushed himself through practice not only for his school, but for himself. Once, he was heard to say: “I like the feeling you get after running hard ... it gives you a feeling of accomplishment!” An active member and former President of the Episcopal Youth Councilmen at St. Peter’s Church, Danny proved to be a responsible person and leader who cared about his friends and his and their relationship to God. It is not our place to question WHY this happen¬ ed ... we only need to say a prayer and Danny will always be close in our hearts. ... The Homecoming queen for that first Homecoming was Sharon Can¬ non Dashiell followed by Nancy Hess in 1967, Patti Bloodswortfi Schuster in 1968, and Sally Can¬ non in 1969. Kathy Sowards began a new decade as Home¬ coming queen in 1970. Noreen Jones in 1971, Sallie Grier Del¬ linger in 1972, Teri Minner in 1973, Karyn Shave Layton 1974, Donna Lupean in 1975, Martha Moore in 1976, Teri Quatman in 1977, Joni Leonard in 1978, and Leslie Hooks in 1979. This is a memory that these girls and their courts will carry throughout their lives, because it is an honor to be a Homecoming queen and on the Homecoming court. These mem¬ ories will last forever. ... AND PRESENT — 1980 Karen and Scott A Happy Moment This year Bennett’s Homecoming weekend was held October third and fourth. Friday night’s festivities included the Homecoming football game. Our mighty Clipper football team sailed over Central High with a hard fought victory of 13-12. Because of rain the parade and crowning of the queen were postponed until Satur¬ day. The theme for the weekend was “SAILING ”. Cap¬ turing first place in the float competition were the Fresh¬ men with their version of Sailing. Karen Carlson was crowned 1980 homecoming queen by last year’s queen, Leslie Hooks. Saturday night the Homecoming dance was held featuring the great sounds of “Razor”. Our queen presided over a court of two rep¬ resentatives from each class. The senior attendants were Vicky Brickous with escort Benton Barkley and Trina Henry with escort Gary Bailey. Followed by the juniors Candie Smith with escort Gary Flower and Ellvn Hogg with escort Mike McFarlin. Julie Webster with escort David Hughes and Denean Church with escort Josh Mac¬ intosh were the sophomore attendants and Carol Cul¬ pepper with escort Mike Phoebus and Etah Johnson were the freshman attendants. 91 International Intercnltural I rof ranis The Bennett Chapter of the American Field Service got off the ground in September by electing officers. Ronnie Fisher, a returnee from Bolivia was elected President while Robyn Winship and Meg Webster were elected to the positions of Vice-President and Secretary-Treasurer. The club first sponsored a “Mile of Pennies” campaign to raise money for our Foreign Students. Meetings were held at night each month for Club members to meet and talk with both Nacio and Michelle. Returnees Ronnie Fisher, Kirsten Huber from Chile and Karen Daughtery from Australia also gave talks and explained about their trips abroad. The week of March 16th was proclaimed AFS week by Mayor Ruark. On Saturday 21st, the AFS Chapter sponsored a Radio Auction on Radio sta¬ tion WJDY, in which the club members participated. Other activities were the Rotary Day Assembly in March and the AFS car wash in April. With the support of Mrs. Hayne, our Advisor, Bennett has had two students from another country, 3 students returning from overseas and 4 students traveling abroad for this year. This in itself is a stunning tally. Mrs. Huber; 1 This year Bennett hosted two foreign ex¬ change students. Ignacio Bermejo, left, from Spain was hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Boyd Dolbey Jr. of Nanticoke. Michelle Lugassy, right, from France was hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Morton Owrutsky of Salisbury. Both Nacho and Michelle came to Bennett as seniors and added flavor and richness to Bennett’s school life. Nacho was an active member of Bennett’s soccer team while Michelle was in the spotlight in the senior class play, Our Town and Annie Get Your Gun. Also traveling overseas from J. M. Bennett is Shelley Rayne, who is liv¬ ing outside of Durban, South Africa. Shelley’s host family has three boys and her parents. She is at- tending an all-girl, government-run school in Durban. Shelley will return home during January of 1982. Robyn Winship has been selected to travel abroad during the sum¬ mer of 1981. Robyn, a senior, wished to travel overseas but without missing her senior year. The summer pro¬ gram is just one of the many programs A.F.S. offers students at J. M. Bennett. Robyn is spending three months with a host family and school in another part of the world. Meg Webster also participating in the American Field Ser¬ vice has been chosen to travel overseas during the summer of 1981. Meg, a junior, also doesn’t want to miss her senior year ac¬ tivities. She is also at¬ tending a host school and is staying with a host family. Meg is traveling abroad this summer to stay in Brazil. Ginny Gourley is representing the Bennett chapter of A.F.S. on the North Island of New Zealand. After two days of orientation at Auckland, New Zealand, she traveled to a dairy farm where she will spend the next year. Ginny’s family consists of a brother, two sisters and her new parents. She will return during January of 1982. Row 1: Kim Bradford, Christa Boolukas, Edwina Dashiell, Joan Oberholtzer, Lynn Zosh, Julie Sterling, Molly Bicknell, Ginny Gourley. There is a lot of fun, excitement and hard work that goes into the making of a great musical, especially here at Bennett! Soon after the Junior Class play, auditions were held for parts ranging from lead singers to backstage parts, such as chorus and stage work ... all equally important. After the lists were posted, the case and crew became a big family as preparations for another opening night at Bennett got underway. Long before that night, sets were created, costumes were ordered and made, lines were memorized, and music was learned. Also, of course, there were many long hours of practice. The week of opening night could be described with many adjectives . . . the most popular being “ex¬ hausting.” Each night 50 to 60 people tried to squeeze into the dressing and make-up rooms as costumes and make-up were experimented with. The whole show was run through from beginning to end, the purpose be¬ ing “constructive criticism.” When opening night finally arrived, excited laughter could be heard backstage as parents wished their young “stars” good luck in the theatrical style of “Break a leg!” A carefully selected few were thrown into the boys’ shower. Presents for our great leaders; Mr. Reavis and Mr. Hammer were chosen and paid for with love. Amidst all of the laughter and fun, a feeling of tension was unmistakably in the air, for whether you were Buffalo Bill, Frank Butler, Annie Oakley, Dolly Tate or an Indian Squaw, we all shared an equal amount of nervousness. Of course, every part was important, and even more significant ... we knew almost everyone in the audience! Being an actor on stage couldn’t possibly be as nice as being able to sit in the audience and see the whole show “front on” ... but being in the audience couldn’t possibly be measurable to the feeling of being able to say: “I helped make that show one of the best this community has ever seen!” Most school spirit shown by the Funny Freshmen oo 05 IN CM i 00 CM o C-4 co 2 a ) a) G O D a 6 o CJ c 5 C 5 CO U o- C 5 CD 0 O O 00 CD 05 JD E 05 s 05 oc Double Trouble Cool Dude Class Competition is an annual event to determine which class has the most school spirit. H]acho t emejo IN THE STATE From the coach: This past soccer season has been one of the most enjoyable and rewarding ones of my six seasons as head coach. The main highlight of the entire season was partici¬ pating in the State Class B Finals. Previous to this season, the soccer team had advanced into the State Semi-Finals several times, but this was the first time in the history of the school that our Clippers made it to the Finals. The team’s unity was a major factor in advancing to the Finals. One of the best remembered games of the year was played on Nov. 8,1980 when we soundly defeated Brooklyn Park High School by a score of 2-1. This sent us into the State Finals against defending champs — Oakland Mills High School. The squad ' s performance in that game was exceptional. Emotions ran high after the victory and it wasn’t until afterwards that we all realized our great accomplishment. The 1980 soccer season will be remembered by everyone as one of the most successful seasons ever at Bennett Senior High. Terry Dix Soccer Coach Team: Bock Row. Left to Right: Crouch Torn ’ Dix.
