Few people realize the amount of work Mrs. Carey contributes to¬ wards the making of Bennett’s yearbook. And so to show our appreciation we say thank you in this way. IQ, UkAl l ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY MR. RICHARD A. GREENWOOD, Vice-President To the Class of 1970: You are completing your high school education and assum¬ ing the responsibilities of adulthood during an era that pre¬ sents many challenges to the individual and society. While great technological, scientific, and cultural advancements have been made, many problems remain unsolved. Poverty and un¬ employment remain in spite of our great wealth. Animosities among races still exist. Crime is increasing. Wars continue in spite of our efforts to find peaceful solutions to disagree¬ ments among nations. A segment of our population is more concerned with the rights of the individual than with the welfare of the group. In the years ahead you will have the responsibility of trying to find the answer to important problems which my genera¬ tion has failed to solve. I sincerely hope your three years at Bennett Senior have prepared you for the task. With my best wishes for your future success and happiness, I am Very truly yours, J‘ Carl ' ft . Dumire 12 Assistant Principal: MR. ANTHONY SARBANES Dear Graduates: I want to congratulate each of you for attaining one of the major goals of your life—successful completion of your public high school education. You will now go down the many roads of life, some of which will cross from time to time. Regard¬ less of what you do or where you go, I hope you will look back at your years at James M. Bennett Senior High School as enjoyable, rewarding, and instrumental in developing you for whatever endeavor you pursue. Warmest personal regards, (jlvt T Anthony Sarbanes Assistant Principal: MR. WILLIAM C. EVANS To the Class of 1970: May I wish for each member of the Class of 1970 success and happiness. In order to be assured of this, one’s education must include two important factors; an intellectual attitude toward life, and a philosophy of life. The proper intellectual attitude toward life implies that one must find the world and life particularly interesting by viewing them realistically, and one should understand that that which is now past was once a living present, just as the now living present is already in the course of becoming the past of another present. CARL WAGNER, Counselor MR. CHARLES CHERRY, Vice-principal In 1970, 130 Bennett students attended the Wicomico County Vocational-Technical Center. These 130 students included 70 juniors who attended in the morning and 60 seniors who had classes at Vo-Tech in the afternoon. Next year the curriculum will include 16 courses. Most of these courses are two-year, three-period-per-day pro¬ grams yielding three credits per year. The newest addi¬ tion is a course in food service and restaurant manage¬ ment. 30 CLASS OFFICERS Left to Right: SECRETARY—Karen Shockley PRESIDENT—Don Dashiell VICE PRESIDENT—Diane Odell TREASURER—Gwen Cornish Three years ago we took a big step—from junior high we came with our hopes and fears to Bennett Sr. Some of these hopes and fears have been rea¬ lized in our three years here, some have been for¬ gotten. But one thing is fore sure; our sails have been set and now the wind is about to test them. 34 CLASS COUNCIL First Row: Shelley Holland, Ilene Marks, Terri Nelson, Joi Nicholson, Danna Linn. Second Row: Talley Winches¬ ter, Frank Hanna, Peter Isler, Tom Weir, Rod Flowers. The Class of 70 has been fortunate to have two understanding and hard working advisors—Mrs. Peggy Swartz and Mr. Carl Wilson. Without their help the Senior PTA program, prom, Baccalaureate, and graduation could not have been nearly as suc¬ cessful. For these highlights of our Senior year and for the minor details that go unnoticed—thank you. 35 7 e StUl s4ie Set — ?6e Ti cnet ' tyet 7 7e4t ?6e Cue z uC cme (facet Sony . i 4 ' Ptace } t6e Scut ' fyeCCotv IRoce . l-or two years we adjusted to high school life at Wicomico Junior High—making new friends and becoming active in school life. Ninth grade found us in the newly constructed but not yet completed Bennett Junior High. A Stu¬ dent Council was organized and a school constitution was written. Athletic teams and school clubs were formed. In September. 1967 the class of 1970 took the big step. As the first new class to come to Bennett in four years, we proved our worth when our class float won first place in the Homecoming Parade. Our class sponsored the Holly B ll which was another success. Many members of our class partici- pated in school activities and the newly formed Girls Track team was composed almost entirely of girls from our class. As Juniors, our class surged forward at the last moment to sell the most P.T.A. raffle tickets and walk away with the $100.00 prize. In February, Martha Copony left Bennett to attend school in Chile as an American Field Service exchange student. Junior Thespians produced Rest Assured and many classmates were also in the school musical Bye, Bye Birdie. A banquet was held in honor of the das;s ctf 1969, hopffigt evive the traditional honor. Oie °f the highlights of the year was the arrival of our class rings, an event met with tim usual enthusiasm. Cathy Caldwell was elected the first female Student Council president in Bennett ' s history. September 2nd, 1969—on top at last! Under the able leadership of our class president, Don Dadiiett ve settled down for a busy year. A.F.S. exchange student Peter Isler of Switzerland iwas a welcome member to our class. Once again our class won first place honors in the Homecoming Parade competition. Sally Cannon was crowned Homecoming Queen. The senior class presented Lili m Sn the fall. Talley Winchester reigned over the Holly Ball. Members of our class were instrumental in establishing a Wicomico County Association of Student Councils and in getting support for the Maryland Youth Council. April 8th the Seniors topped the underclassmen in All Sports Night. April 17 a Junior-Senior banquet was held in our honor. The days began passing quickly leading up to the exciting night. Our Senior Prom, which was The Endless Summer,” was held May 15 and we danced until midnight in a tropical island setting. May 28th was Senior Day and we enjoyed a day of special privileges, ending with the Senior Awards Assembly honoring outstanding seniors. Exams were patiently endured while waiting for the big moment—the Baccalaureate sermon May 31 and then graduation exercises June 5th, a momentous occasion marking an end to our years together. 36 Lewis Alexander Abbot, Jr. Marcus Walton Acworth III Alice Aileen Adkins Robert Scott Aldridge Berta Elena Alvarez Ronald Gary Arvey Dennis Stedman Austin Wallace Howard Bailey William Stephan Bailey Thomas William Baird Bertie Lee Baisden Wesley Charles Baker 37 Robert Alan Balin Florence Regina Ballard Caroll Linwood Banks, Jr. Colette Frances Banks Saunders Vincent Banks Sharon Lee Banks Steven Lee Banks Walter Irvin Banks Sharon Ann Baxter Joseph Douglas Beach Jr. Gerald Dewight Beauchamp Norma Jean Benjamin 38 Susan Georgene Bessette Ronald Joseph Bishop Sharon Mae Blevins James Allen Bolen Theodore Ralph Bonwit, Jr. John Philip Bornt Dennis Keith Bounds Diane Lynn Bounds Richard Webster Bounds Jay Noble Bozman Joe Walter Bratten Larry Joseph Briddell 39 Richard Allen Bromley Corlene Phyllis Brown David Alan Brown Karen Elizabeth Brown Lenard Joseph Brown Linda Lawson Bryan Deborah Lee Hiller Bullis Virgil Vernon Bullis Kathryn Veronica Burke William Bernice Burton III Hope Ruth Byrd Kathryn Caldwell Lois Ann Campbell Sally Frances Cannon Michael Hanson Cantwell Paul Carey, Jr. Gerald Robert Carpenter Mary Lynn Carter Maxine Portia Chandler Ranson Chandler Linda Ruth Cherepow Roger Columbus Christopher, Jr. Charles Richard Clark Keith Edward Collins 41 Dianne Lucile Cook Elizabeth Ann Cook Ann Elizabeth Cooper Nancy Lee Cooper Robert James Copes Martha Jean Copony Gwendolyn Malvenia Cornish Handy Lofton Cornish Brenda Joyce Cottman Deborah Elizabeth Cottman Kenny Eugene Cox Deborah Ann Crain Vivian Leigh Crockett Sue Ellen Dallas Charles Brown Dashiell Sheila Mae Davis William Edward Davis Elizabeth Lorraine Dayton Jacqueline Alice DeCola Terry Elizabeth Deer Jeffrey Andrew Dennis Donald Lee Dashiell, Jr. Valerie Drucilla Dashiell Linette Alveta Davis 43 Kathleen Livingston Disharoon Alvira Catherine Donohue Beverly Ann Donoway Patrick Vance Donaway Irene Dorman Richard Steven Dubsky Cathy Ann Dudderar Donald Perrington Dunn Jeffery Brian Dunn Phillip Lane Dunn Edward James Dutton, Jr. Richard LaRue Dutton 44 Paula Lorraine Dyer Karen Lee Eccleston Peggy Lynn Elliott Ralph Issac Elsey, Jr. Ronald Arthur Ennis Nancy Jean Evans Anne Russell Ellis Linda Lee Elsey Marcelus Barry Elsey David Jewell Ferguson, Jr. Robert Perry Figgs Herbert Michael Fincher 45 Kristine Lou Fisher James Roderic Flowers Florence Lauderadale Fowlkes Cecil Thomas Frazier Donna Marie French William John Fries Rhett Laroy Frye Gary William Furbush Bruce Philip Gapetz Patrick Eugene Geer Steven Dallas Gehrm Elnora Gibson 46 Ann Lee Gilbert Mary Sue Gilkerson Patrick Anthony Gould William Green Harold Richard Green halgh Margaret Todd Grier Guy Wesley Griffin Barbara Ann Guy Richard Anthony Hairr Brenda Anne Hall Barbara Jean Hammond Frank Brown Hanna 47 Irvin Timothy Harmon Dolores Ann Harrell Frederick Raymond Harris Connie Dianne Harrison Joseph Richard Hartman Harry Phillip Hastings Ronnie St edman Hastings Joe Thomas Hearn, Jr. Nancy Louise Hebert Christine Lee Henry Elizabeth Belden Heyse Robert Lee Hill 48 Nancy Marie Hitch Patsy Lee Hitchens Janice Lynn Hoffman Gregg Burnett Holland Michele Holland Jane Aline Hoover Brenda Lea Hosier Arlethia Phyllis Hull Beverly Sue Hurley Peter Thomas Isler Joyce Anne Jackson Lura Lorraine Johnson 49 Robert LeeRoy Johnson Alfred Paul Jones Delores Ann Jones Ellen Virginia Jones Henry Wilmore Jones Richard Lee Jones, Jr. Sheila Mae Jones Michael Carrie Kenney Jerry Joseph King Norma Lee Knowles Charlene Rochefort Lamy Gary Weaver Larmore Todd Raymond Lauridsen Nancy Jean Layfield Robert Lawrence Layton, Jr. Carolyn Sally Lewis Darryl James Lewis Debra Ann Lindenkohl Danna Lou Linn Victor Lee Long Crystal Smith Lowe James Alton Lynch Marion Jo Manning Frank Edward Manuel 51 David Michael McAllister, Jr. Elizabeth Louise McCarthy Deborah Gail McIntyre Lynn Murray McIntyre Roger Norwood Mcjilton, Jr. Duffy Newell McKenzie, Jr. Jeffrey Alan Merritt Ogia Lester Miles Robert Glenn Miller, Jr. Glenn Jay Marks Ilene Renee Marks Sandra Lynn Mason £ ■ . The play, a serious drama, was very well cast and was di¬ rected by Mrs. Stephanie Romero, drama teacher, and Terry Deer, student director. Although LILIOM had a dramatic tone, Robb Johnson, Ilene Marks, and Alvin Wooters provided the much appreciated comedy. Main characters were excellently portrayed by John Moun¬ tain (Liliom), Candie Overton (Julie), and Donna French (Mrs. Muskat). Jackie DeCola, Sally Cannon, Mike Fincher, and Charlie Powell stood out in supporting roles. Terry Deer 72 Susan, are you sure this is the way Rock Hudson started? I wish I had a way with women like Ricky does. I’m rough and I’m tough. Don’t touch me or I’ll black both your eyes. Uh, Candie, there’s a funny numbness in my right leg. Try not to be so emotional, Alvin. I’ll just sneak a little swig to calm my nerves.” 73 Salisbury Lions Club Award . Wayne Pearson Salisbury Kiwanis Club Award . Pat Gould whose parents moved to Parkersburg, West Virginia stayed with Coach Tom Bailey and will enter VPI in the fall. The Aldridges moved to Prince¬ ton, New Jersey, while Scott remained in Salisbury to live with Dr. and Mrs. Andrew Mitchell. Next year Scott will enter Dick¬ inson. Bill Stephens stayed in Salisbury with his grand¬ mother, Mrs. Laura Cole¬ man. His parents moved to Stamford, Conn, tempor¬ arily. Bill will be an AFS exchange student next year. Puerto Rico’s newest addition, Glenn Marks made his home with Mr. and Mrs. E. Homer White. Glenn will attend Uni¬ versity of Md. next year. Many other Seniors will move including two on the Voyager Staff—Cathy White and Talley Win¬ chester. Cathy is moving to Milford, Delaware and Talley to Tennessee. Cathy will attend University of Delaware next fall and Talley VPI. To an y Senior who is leaving, the class of ' 70 wishes you Good Luck as we go our sepa¬ rate ways ... 83 This year Bennett again had the honor of participating in the A.F.S. program. We hosted Peter Isler from Winterthur, Switzerland who made his home with Alan Ruhl. Peter will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor and his abilities in soccer and tennis. Martha Copony represented Bennett in Puerto Montt, Chile. She was chosen last year by a student exchange committee to leave in February, 1969 and to return in January, 1970. This experience and her Spanish are two things Martha will never forget. We congratulate Peter and Martha for the honor of being chosen as exchange students and wish them all the luck in the coming years. 85 UNDERCLASSMEN CLASS OFFICERS President: Kevin Sullivan Vice-President: Liz Ann Mitchell Secretary: Connie Dennis Treasurer: Debbie Stevens ADVISORS Mr. Cummins and Mrs. Phipps CLASS COUNCIL J. HOMECOMING ’69 Bennett celebrated its third annual Homecoming November 7-8. Friday afternoon’s pep rally was the spark for the week¬ end’s festivities. That evening the competitive floats from the classes and organizations paraded to the stadium to await judging. The Clippers stomped Colonel Richardson with a score of 34-6. Halftime included a performance by the band, the an¬ nouncement of the Seniors ' winning float and the crowning of Sally Cannon as Homecoming Queen. Members of her court were Danna Linn and Barbara Newcomb (seniors), Ann Kraus and Laura Giganti (juniors), and Beverly Corbin and Debbie Webster (sophomores). Saturday night the Homecoming Dance was held. The theme was Treasure Trove and the decorations made an under- the-sea atmosphere. The Rain’’ provided the music for a very successful Homecoming. The Sophomores were in charge of the dance, and their decorations were very effective. The stage was done in a winter scene, offset by an old sleigh and trees. Talley Winchester was crowned Holly Ball Queen. Her attendants were Diane Odell and Marsha Robins (seniors), Kathy Schmidt and Diana Maycock (jun¬ iors), and Shay Betts and Bobbe Brittingham (sopho¬ mores). Music was provided by the Vibratones.” Sophomores used a winter forest scene in dec¬ orating. This was the second year in a row that this honor had been successfully carried out. An excellent dinner was fol¬ lowed by well-rounded enter¬ tainment. Performances ranged from slap-stick humor in skits to serious folk songs. Bill Ringold’s take off on Johnny Cash highlighted the evening. We hope Junior-Senior Ban¬ quets in Bennett’s future are as well-accepted and appreci¬ ated. :::::: ::::::: CAST Mother (Mary Jones) . Laura Watkins. Melody Jones . Leon Jones . Kenneth Carpenter . . For their 6-4 record, Bennett’s 1969 Varsity Football Squad should be complimented. Coach Bailey, in his first year with the team, guided our boys to an outstanding season, which included sixteen new records. The Clippers’ winning streak was broken when they tackled undefeated Middletown. Following this loss Bennett also bowed to Cambridge, Easton, and North Caroline. The team regained their backers when they defeated Wi-Hi 14-12. Individual accomplishments were made by Dickie Perry and Pat Gould in their defensive abilities. The outstanding player of the year was John Parker who became the first junior to be chosen for the All-Delmarva Football Team and receive the Sportsmanship Award. Booters lose playoff ... to Wi-Hi The 1969 version of Bennett’s soccer team did not have as fine a season as was expected. Posting its first losing record since becoming a high school, the Clippers ended with a 5-6 record. Tri- captain Cathie Dudderar was high scorer for the season averaging 18.3 shots per game with a sea¬ son total of 220 points. In the last game of the season, all the seniors were placed in the game. Retiring seniors are: Linda Cherepow, Cathie Dudderar, Franki Rob¬ bins, Marsha Robins, and Debbie Smith. Mrs. Tucker’s hope for next year’s team is George-Ann Wingrove, a junior who will be the only girl left to play first string. Potential members of next year’s team will be players of the J.V. team. As was true last year, most of the games were won by a sizable margin. The girls’ only loss was to Washington High with a score of 9-14. Among the outstanding players was Nancy Hebert, pitcher, who had an excellent season with only one loss. Besides relief pitching, Debbie Elliott proved capable as an outfielder with many good plays to her credit. Marsha Robins warrants recognition. She has been the team’s catcher for two years and leads this year’s team in batting. Marsha hit eight home runs and received the Soft- ball Award this year. Other outstanding players we e George Ann Wingrove and Linda Cherepow. Both were strong fielders and contributed much to the success of the team. Accordingly, organiza¬ tional meetings were held and a consti¬ tution was drawn up for a county asso¬ ciation of student councils. Two amendments were added to the Constitution, providing for self-nomi¬ nation of homeroom representatives and participation by Student Council officers and class presidents in discussions at Student Council meetings. Several innovative projects were com¬ pleted this year. The motorcade pre¬ ceding the North Caroline football game on November 21 was a first. For the first time, trash cans appeared under the water fountains. Another change was the replacement of Chau Soo Man, Bennett’s foster child, by Yu Lee Ling, a seven- year-old girl from Hong Kong. For the third year, Bennett students’ literary efforts have found an outlet in the Tradewinds, Bennett’s literary magazine. Original art, photographs, poems, and prose are submitted anonymously by students, then judged by the staff. They are first read and discussed by the staff, rediscussed, and then voted upon. The four editors pass final judgement. The best selections, regardless of number, are chosen. The journal, costing fifty cents, comes out in the spring. 176 Co-editors Cathy White and Jackie DeCoIa with ADVISOR MRS. ANNA CAREY. Voyager Staff CO-EDITORS . The 1969-1970 school year welcomed the addition of a new club to Bennett, the Debate Club. Requested by a group of students, the club was formed last fall and has attracted wide interest and support from the student body. The Debate Club fills a void at Bennett by offering a forum for orderly discussion and argu¬ ment on limitless issues, and provides invaluable training in logical thinking and coherent presen¬ tation of arguments. In its first year, the Debate Club concerned itself mainly with basic principles of debate and informal debate procedures. Practice debates within the club were held and orderly argument, rather than issues were stressed. Future plans, however, include public debates, debate contests, and competition with other schools. 189 Homemakers engage in needle craft First Row: Alecia Powell; Vice-President, Beverly Donaway; Secretary. You have observed our busi¬ ness managers at their card tables religiously selling yearbook subscriptions during lunch, and you have witnessed Bennett ' s first two female photographers roaming the halls on the lookout for that certain picture. Yes, we have worked hard but the 1970 Voyager could never have been compiled without the help of many people. We wish to thank our dedicated staff who have put in many hours. Also we would like to thank the teachers who have been patient and un¬ derstanding and we would especially like to thank Mr. Owens and Mr. Smith for their help with the yearbook assembly. We have been fortunate to have a cooperative administration. Mr. Jones, his custodial staff, and the secretaries have also contributed their services to the Voyager. Most of all, we would like to thank our advisor, Mrs. Anna V. Carey, for her encouragement and helpful advice. We hope that this will be one of the best year¬ books Bennett has produced. Our efforts will be re¬ warded if you, the students, feel that this yearbook realistically portrays the 1970 school year. After all, the yearbook is for a special group of people—the students. •.
