Dear Graduates: Many of you will graduate from this school with a distinction that cannot be claimed by any previous class. This is the distinction of having spent six years of your public education at James M. Bennett Senior High School. Your success or failure as adult citizens will furnish us with an excellent criteria for measuring the success of our educational program. I hope we have taught you to think clearly. I hope we have given you a desire to continue learning, for one who graduates today and stops learning tomorrow is truly uneducated. You have my best wishes for your continued success and happiness. WITH EXPERIENCE AS OUR TEACHER,WE CAN GO FORWARD WITH CONFIDENCE TOWARD THE FUTURE. GEORGE BENEDICT, JR. Motto With a sail and a prayer we dare the unknown . Flower Forget-me-not Colors Navy blue and Ice blue Song Bom Free 32 Lynn Bonwit Bill Morgan Bruce Robertson Chris Snee Linda Hastings Our voyage began as seventh graders, when we tackled our first year at the newly constructed James M. Bennett Jr. High School. We assisted in establishing a successful student council and writing a school constitution. This year brought about the birth of a new pride in our school, the “Bennett Spirit” that stood out in the difficult years of our school’s growth. As sophomores, our class sponsored the Holly Ball, started a class scrapbook, and sold book- covers. In May some class members participated in the first school musical Anything Goes. This year also marked the beginning of our class’ recognition in sports participation. Our JV football team proved successful against their opponents and triumphed twice over its cross town rival, Wi-Hi. The Varsity football team also outdid its rivals in that great 20-0 Turkey Day Game. “Little Jimmy Bennett” had grown up. Welcoming a new status as Juniors, we eagerly prepared for our senior year. In March, some¬ what impatiently, we awaited the arrival of our class rings. Also in March, came the production of our second school musical, Brigadoon , followed in April by our Junior Class play, Don’t Ever Grow Up. We honored the class of 1967 by sponsoring a Jr.-Sr. Banquet. Later in the year our class was honored by having twenty-two Juniors inducted into the National Honor Society and two of our classmates chosen as AFS candidates. Mark Manning was sent to study in South Africa, and Shelly Burns was chosen to go to Germany. On a summer exchange program, Susan Mann visited Brazil. On September 5, 1967 — we were finally on top! Our foreign exchange student from Australia, Eugene Ragghianti, better known as “Raggs,” brightened our classes and lightened our hearts with his very British accent and tremendous person¬ ality. He played the leading role in the production of our senior class play, Charley’s Aunt. Nancy Hess reigned as our Homecoming Queen, with Chris Snee as her attendant. Our Christmas activities brought about the selection of Brenda Townsend as Holly Ball Queen attended by Terri Howard. The basketball season climaxed with the winning of the District Five Championship and compet¬ ing at the State Semi-finals — A Bennett first. Other class activities included presenting a helm to the school and entertaining our parents at a Senior Appreciation Night. May third was the date of our senior class trip to New York — which proved very exciting. Our Sen¬ ior Prom “Springtime in Paris” indeed left fond memories an unforgettable night. Also in May awards were presented to outstanding seniors. The Baccalaureate sermon and the graduation exercise marked the end of our six years together. 33 Mary Ellen Abbott Patricia Louise Abramovich Maurice Albert Adkins Philip Clayton Adkins George Lawrence Adshead Joan Mae Anderson Samuel Anderson, Jr. Charles Raymond Andrews David Earl Andrews, Jr. Nancy Ellen Bailey Delois Balam Charlie Balem 34 Deborah Ann Banks Joan Marie Banks Mary Jeanette Banks Roger Alan Banks, Jr. Jane Barker Beardsley Norris Lee Beauchamp Patrick William Bell John Remy Belleville Deborah Lou Belote George Alton Benedict, Jr. Glenn Hermon Benedict, Jr. Bernita Ann Bennett 35 Jean Carolyn Bivens David Andrew Black Stephen Bryan Bloodsworth Steven Craig Bohannon Sharon Lee Boles Diana Lynn Bonwit Eugene Charles Bounds Patricia Ann Bounds Ronnie Lee Bounds Sally Jane Bounds Glenda Jean Bozman Sharon Lee Bozman 36 Donald Culver Bradley Doris May Bratten Gary Martin Brent Joseph Leon Butler Donna Ann Campbell Rose Lee Campbell Mabel Evelyn Brown Sharon Rae Brumbley Donald Joseph Burke Christine Kay Briddell Harry Steven Brock Linda Lee Brown 37 Carroll Custis Cartwright Stephanie Joyce Caswell Dolores Ann Causey Charles Gary Chatham Glenda Lois Chatham Priscilla Ann Chew Princess Ann Childs Patricia Anne Chronister Barry David Connor Janice Lynn Cooper Donald Ray Cottman Maxwell Purnell Cottman 38 Diane Rebecca Couch Lois Rae Coverdale Victoria Ann Cranfield Blair Lee Crockett, Jr. Brenda Carol Cropper John Henry Cross Carroll Ray Daugherty Sheldon Parker Dawson Diana Louise Deal James Roger Dillow Janet Marie Disharoon Blanche Marie Dix 39 David Lee Dixon Stephen Leslie Dixon Henrietta Marie Donalds Patricia Ann Donalds Brenda Ann Dorman Charles Thomas Dryden James Allen Dubsky Coreatha Virginia Dutton Jeanette Roberta Dykes Deborah Ann Elderdice Gary Frederick Elliott Maxine Ann Elliott 40 Richard Eugene Ennis, Jr. James Leonard Eure James Winter Evans, Jr. Bleecker Hurlbut Fritz Debra Jeanne Fritz Bethena Elizabeth Gale Clement Marion Gaskill Hazel Anne Gelnett Mary Catherine Geppi Rebecca Gibson Fara Maria Giganti Ralph Charles Giordano Dana Claire Glushakow Andrew Lee Goslee Deborah Anne Goslee Robert Ray Graves John Weldon Greene Louise Daisy Griffith A 42 Miles Ernest Gunby William Thomas Guy, Jr. Bruce Stephen Hall Jeanne Reed Hall William Lawton Hammond Virginia Lee Hanna Elton Woodrow Harrington Cynthia Lee Harrison Linda Lea Hastings Susan Nancy Hayes Marguerite Ellen Hayman Jo Ann Hearn 43 Dennis John Hebert Charles Henry Nancy Ruth Hess Thomas Robert Hiller Linda Gail Hitch Richard Stanley Hoback William Woodrow Hodges, Jr. Sorin Norman Holland, III William Sibley Holland Robert Marvin Holloway Donald Louis Horseman Karen Elaine Horsman 44 Steven Wilson Horsman Emily Joan Howard Teresa Lynn Howard Stephen Harry Hudson Cora Ruth Hughes Charles Frederick Hull Louella Marie Hull Robert Keith Hurley Cameron Stuart Jackson Constance Jackson Sarah McCombs Jackson Theobald Amos Jackson 45 Elzey Rufus James Barbara Jean Johnson Frank Thomas Johnson Sidney Terrence Johnson Albert Leroy Jones Linda Marie Jones Marie Jacqueline Jones Nvazina Virginia Jones Regina Lucille Jones Walter Jones, Jr. Donna Lynn Kamanitz Judy Lynn Kauffman Ralph Grayson Kelley, II Thomas Peter Landry Kathy Anne Lappe Joseph Martin Lappin Mary Lena Larmore William Alfred Larmore Sharon Martha Lawrence Helen M. Presenting humorous skits, the class reviewed the highpoints of their six years together at Bennett. With the symbolic candle of leadership, the spirit of the Class of ’68 was passed on to the Class of ’69. f. J1 SSJBFi ' Mf v v J J ' . K T fs “WALK TOGETHER, TALK TOGETHER . . Eugene Ragghianti, an American Field Service student from Australia, entered the Class of ’68 in September. He was J.M.B.’s first boy exchange student—but what an experien ce! From the first day, he got into every¬ thing—taking a lead in the Senior Class play and becoming president of the Drama Club. And he proved to be a ball of fire with a British accent. 77 SENIORS STAGE CHARLEY’S AUNT The curtain rises, the lights flash, the audience laughs and applauds as the Senior Class presents its final dramatic performance, Charley 9 s Aunt , under the direction o f Mr. David Johnson and Glenn Benedict, student director. This rip-roaring comedy, staged December 7 and 8, came to life as two young Englishmen persuaded their best friend to pose as Charley’s wealthy aunt so that they could entertain their girlfriends. Then they discovered that the girls’ guardian was madly in love with the “aunt”! But all ends well when the real aunt appears and the young couples are able to plan their marriages. Bill Morgan . In early Septe mber Shelly arrived at her new home, the Rixens in Preetz, a small town in northern Germany. Adopting a new language and establishing a new way of life was difficult but Gudren Rixon, her German sister, offered much help. Shelly attended school six days a week and was required to take fifteen subjects. Shelly returned to the U.S. on July 20 from her stay in Germany. Her year there not only provided a new and exciting experience for her, but for the people of Preetz as well since Shelly was their first AFS’er. Mark Manning returned from Bloemfontein, Republic of the Orange Free State, South Africa, on January 15, 1968, after a year spent there as an exchange student. Mark left early in 1967 for his new home. Mark found his second home different but exciting. The major adjustments seemed to be caused by the hot climate and strict social customs. Upon re-entering Bennet, Mark took every chance to relate his wonderful experiences to the student body. Wearing the striped jacket of the uniform from his school, he showed slides during the A.F.S. Fund Assembly. He completed his senior year at Bennett and graduated with the class of ’68. 120 SERVICE AWARDS UNDERCLASSMEN First Row: Sharon Lowe, Anne Briddell, Jackie DeCola, Marsha Robins, Glenda Tawes, Cheryl Lowe. Bennett overpowered Easton with a score of 46 to 19. Preceding the game was the colorful Homecoming Parade. The sophomores showed their spirit by winning first place with their red and white rocket ship. The following evening the Home¬ coming Dance was held in the gaily decorated cafeteria. Here Nancy Hess, queen; Barbara New¬ comb, sophomore attendant; Beverly Bloodsworth, junior attendant; Chris Snee, senior attendant; Sally Dickey, junior attendant; Gayle Williams, sopho¬ more attendant; reigned as the Homecoming Court. i 122 OMING FIGHT CLIPPEF 123 GO BIG The cold, rainy, weather only added to the misery of the Bennett fans as they filed out of the stands, Turkey Day ’67. Outplay¬ ing the cross-town rivals on the field, the mighty Clippers bowed to the Wi-Hi In¬ dians for the first time in three years. It seemed as though the Clippers might overcome Wi-Hi’s half time lead of 14-0 when the Big Red started moving with a 13 point comeback. But, with six minutes left, the Clippers fumbled on Wi-Hi’s five yard line. The game ended in a disappoint¬ ing defeat for J.M.B., 14-13. 124 TURKEY DAY ’67 125 ... from our sextet BROTHERHOOD This year the Human Relations Clubs of Bennett and Wi-Hi jointly presented an assembly during Brotherhood Week. As Mary Beth Sullivan, president of Ben¬ nett’s Human Relations Club, pointed out, Brotherhood is the feeling which should continue throughout the whole year rather than lasting for one week only. Pictured here are signs of Brotherhood at Bennett ... ... during Christmas ... between Wi-Hi and Bennett ... with Australia 126 ALL SPORTS NIGHT The Class of ’69 emerged victor¬ ious from All Sports Night for the second consecutive year. The event, sponsored by the Varsity Club, was held on March 29 and was followed by a dance for participants and fans. The juniors, taking a lead after the first event, finished with a total of 74 points. The Senior class was not far behind with 69, and the Sophomores were able to muster enough strength to secure 55 points. Events were arranged to account for individual and class efforts. Com¬ petition in gymnastics—floor exer¬ cises, mats, balance beam, vaulting, trampoline, ring, highbar, parallel bars—and the areas of shoe scramble, tug-of-war, foul shooting, and sack race was keen. Keeping in tradition, the victor¬ ious class was honored at the dance following these events. The “Strangest of All” provided the music. A good time was had by all. HOLLY BALL With the approach of the holiday season, the sophomores were busy preparing for the annual Holly Ball held December 15. This year the queen, Brenda Townsend, reigned over Toyland. Sally Can¬ non, sophomore; Bev Bloodsworth, junior; Terri Howard, senior; Sharon Fritz, first Holly Ball queen; Judy Clark, junior; and Brenda Hill, soph¬ omore completed this year’s Holly Ball court. “GIRL IN THE RAIN” On April 4th and 5th, the Class of ’69 made its dramatic debut with the presen¬ tation of James Reach’s play, Girl in the Rain . It was a “hats off” to the Juniors for their performance of a serious play in¬ volving the conspiracies of a young murderess. The cast included Clary Moore, Steve Goldberg, Keith Fleming, Barbara Mc- Quown, Dena Litow, Joan Sharp,. Pam Dashiell, Norman Larmore, and Tom Patt. It was directed by Mr. David Johnson with Karl Russell helping as student director. 129 ASSEMBLIES 130 131 SENIOR ACTIVITIES This page is a brief resume of what the rest of this section contains. As the 1967 Varsity Football team clashed with some of the highest-rated teams in the state, it completed the toughest season ever with a record of four wins and six losses. For the first time, the Big Red was able to trounce both Cambridge and Easton. But, the most spectacular game of the season proved to be the bout with Dematha. A game in which the Clippers lost, but gained the respect of all football enthusiasts. The traditional Turkey Day game saw Ben¬ nett win in the statistics but not on the score- board, as the Clippers ended the year with a 14-13 loss. With the joyous victories and bitter disap¬ pointments, Bennett saw a spirited football team, under able coaching, fight hard and es¬ tablish many firsts for Varsity Football. Yours has been a record of high achievement culminating with your participation in the accreditation of your Alma Mater. Fighting back from humbling defeats on occasion, your athletic teams have gone on to triumph, bringing real glory to your high school. Your class has provided the talent and drive that have made possible successful musical and theat¬ rical activities throughout the years. Certainly your scholastic achieve¬ ments are noteworthy. Unwilling to accept placidly the heritage left you by previous graduating classes, you have established even greater stand¬ ards of performance as goals for those who will follow. The future which you face is uncertain and the times in which you live are unsettled and turbulent. However, it has been your good fortune to spend your maturing years in an atmosphere of stability and reason. You have shown an ability to lead your student body and overcome great odds. With this background we feel that the members of this year ' s gradu¬ ating class will achieve prominence and will furnish leadership in the shap¬ ing of the world in which you will spend your adult lives. Our hopes and best wishes go with you. R. Norman Peregoy 218 PATRONS Elias Adamopoulos, M.D. Robert T. Adkins, M.D. Dr. D. G. Anderson Mr. and Mrs. Walter C. A Friend A Friend A Friend As the ’67-’68 year nears its end and the ’68 Voyager is sent to press, we would like to thank all those members of the staff who have worked long and hard to make this book possible. Many hours of work have gone into its preparation and production and without the help of those dedicated students it would not have been done. A special thanks is also due to all the members of the faculty who have been so helpful and cooperative throughout the year. To the staff of the ’69 Voyager we say, “Good luck,” and hope that your year is as full and rewarding for you as ours has been for us. t C 4. s ; v 221 The Voyager staff has dedicated itself to giving you, the Class of 68 the best yearbook yet. Also I wash to thank Mrs. Anna W. Carey, our Advisor for her help. Glenn Benedict, Jr. Editor-In-Chief
