So let us pledge to Bennett High Our heartfelt loyalty. Lyrics by Miss Ann Vincent Music by Mr. Charles Smith Alma Mater 5 Dedication With the utmost respect, the Class of ' 67 dedicates its yearbook to our principal, Mr. Carl W. Dumire, who has been a guiding force during our high school years. But for his leadership, Bennett could not have achieved the stature it has in the short length of time in which it has been in operation. His sponsorship of many fund-raising programs has earned our school the money for uni¬ forms and other necessary equipment. Without his help, James M. Bennett would not hold the respected place in the community that it now holds. Through his wholehearted support, our school has risen above the standards set as a junior high and has achieved status as a senior high school. And so, it is to this man, Mr. Carl W. Dumire, that we dedicate this year¬ bookāto a man who is himself dedi¬ cated. Always busy, always interestedā Mr. Dumire keeps James M. Bennett Senior High School operating smooth¬ ly and efficientlyācontinually extend¬ ing a friendly hand to students, faculty, and visitors alike. is is nor me en It is not even the beginning of the end. It is rather the end of the beginning. -Winston Churchill 8 ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY They Chartered Our Course Left To Right: Mr. Avery Owen; Mr. Thomas Roe, Vice-President; Mr. William Moore, President; Mrs. Doris Kelly, Secretary; Mr. Rfcyd Mahaffey, Superintendent; Mr. Frank Pusey; Not Shown: Mr. Denver Richardson Royd Mahaffey, Superintendent of Schools Board of Education The interest and concern of the people in this community for the students of schools in Wicomico County is exemplified by the Board of Education. Under the supervision of Mr. Royd Mahaffey, Superintendent of Schools, the board sets school standards and regulations concerning finance, curriculum, sports, and numerous other subjects. The members represent all walks of life, thus providing diversification to produce quality educa¬ tion. Managerial and financial responsibilities are accepted willingly. The Board of Education brings excellence to all the schools of Wicomico County. 10 Our Skipper And First Mate Dear Seniors: Your graduation from high school will bring to an end one phase of your life and the beginning of a new one. It is my sincere hope that the training you have received at Bennett will lead you to success and happi¬ ness in your new life as adult citizens. As you depart to assume your place in our democratic society, I wish you well. I hope you will always remember that only through respect and understanding for the rights and opinions of others can world peace be at¬ tained. I hope you will always remember that with every right goes a responsibility and that you will meet these responsibilities with maturity of thought and judgement. Knowing you as I do, I am confident that the future of our nation is in good hands. Very truly yours. As each class progresses to the point at which it is ready to leave a school, those who stay behind wonder at the speed with which children become adults. In the case of the Class of 1967, you have matured with your school. You have had the distinction of developing many of the events and ideals which are fast becoming proud traditions at Bennett. The standards by which this school is known and admired will always bear your stamp. You have been placed in positions of responsibility and trust since the eighth grade, and you have fulfilled those responsibilities and guarded, that trust with determination, intelligence, and a spirit that refused to be dampened. Graduation day, 1967, is probably the last day that your class will assemble in one place. All of you will be taking on new responsibilities and new trusts, which you will meet head-on and leave this world a little better place for those who follow. ii . . . After their apprentice¬ ship, they are assured of steady pay increases. 25 26 . . . The Only One Of Its Kind On The Eastern Shore . . . Students desiring admission to the Vo-Tech Center must qualify. The Vo-Tech Center is the only one of its kind on the eastern shore of Maryland. Ad¬ mitting only juniors and seniors, it has a total of three hundred students now, with an ex¬ pected enrollment next fall of five hundred. Students And Teachers Take A Break SENIORS AND SENIOR FEATURES The Voyage of the Class of 67 As graduation draws near, we find that all our dreams have become reality. The first of June sym¬ bolizes the culmination of alJ our hopes during the five years we have spent at James M. Bennett Senior High School. As eighth graders in a new school, we set traditions and began a new spirit un¬ like any other school in this area. Our very first task was that of writing a constitution and electing school officers to lead us. John Andrews, as first Student Council President, guided us through the first year, as we adopted the clip¬ per ship as our symbol and red and white as our school colors. The highlight of the year was the dedication of James M. Bennett Junior High School, later to become our senior high school. In ac¬ cordance with this dedication, we were host to many guests at teas and banquets throughout the year. Much to our dismay, September, 1963, heralded the arrival of a n older class, destined to become the first graduating class of James M. Bennett Senior High School. In September, 1964, we returned to Bennett as sophomores. This was our first year of varsity sports and our many defeats were therefore understandable. However, this year was very import¬ ant because it prepared us for the more difficult and more important opposition we would later face. As juniors, we realized the preparation necessary for our all-important senior year. Our first ma¬ jor activity was the production of our junior class play. Fair Exchange , followed by the school musi¬ cal, Anything Goes. On February 27, we received our class rings, and on April 2, honored the Class of ' 66 at the Junior-Senior Dinner Dance. We were honored by having five National Merit Com¬ mendation winners. On September 7, 1966, we began our first last day of school. We welcomed Alex Niklison to our classes more as a new friend rather than as an exchange student. Under the guidance of Russ Dashiell as class president, we formulated plans and activities for the oncoming year, including Arsenic and Old Lace , and the successful production of Brigadoon. In preparation for our first Home¬ coming, we designed and built a float depicting a clipper ship and won first place. Sharon Cannon reigned over the festivities as Bennett ' s first Homecoming Queen; and later, Donna Aydelotte ruled as Holly Ball Queen. May 5 brought a riotous day to New York, and one week later was the Senior Prom. Mardi Gras was the theme. May 24, we had our first practice for Baccalaureate and Graduation at the Civic Center. The Baccalaureate Service was held the following Sunday, May 28, with the Reverend J. Robert Mackey as the speaker. May 30 marked the end of our classes; and Graduation on June 1 marked the end of our five wonderful years at Bennett. For our class, this year has been a culmination, a finish, a climax of five years of hard work. Now, all of our functions and projects stand completed (even the anchor is installed). No final exams stand before our graduation as the dream that began five years go is finally becoming reality. Mark is living with the Johan LintroirTs in Bloemfonstein, which is in the Orange Free S tate of the Republic of South Africa. He is attending Sentrale Hoerskool, where he has already become a part of the school community by leading the school Cadet Band and by participating in track and chess. The school, where students must wear uni¬ forms and speak the native language, is strictly academic. Classes run from eight in the morning until one-thirty, and at four o ' clock the extracurricular activities begin. Mark is gaining an education and a feeling for a country unobtainable except by living in that country. The knowledge he gains in school plus the insights added by his host family will add up to an invaluable exper¬ ience. RODNEY GRAVES Where is the best place to learn watch¬ making? Switzerland, of course, and surely Rodney Graves would agree, having studied there for nearly a year. Rodney won a scholar¬ ship to the Centre Perfectionment Horloger in Neuchatel, Switzerland, in January 1966. Upon completing his course in Switzerland, he returned to Salisbury in December, 1966, to finish his senior year of high school at Ben¬ nett. He is now employed in a local jewelry store and intends to make watchmaking a career. Rodney ' s Swiss training should prove very valuable, and, if possible, he plans to return to Switzerland for further training. Bennett ' s First Homecoming got underway on Friday, November 11, with the best pep rally ever. Featured in the Homecoming Parade, held at 7:00 that evening, were floats by classes and organizations, as well as the candidates for Home¬ coming queen. Half-time ceremonies at the Bennett-Georgetown game in¬ cluded the raffling off of a television set, and a band tribute to the returning alumni. The climax of the evening was the coronation of Sharon Cannon as Bennett ' s first Homecoming Queen. In her court were Honor Attendant Alex Nikilson and Terri Hitchens, seniors; Brenda Townsend and Marian Thomp¬ son, juniors; and Marcella VanHorn and Judy Clark, sopho¬ mores. At the Homecoming Dance on Saturday, November 12, the festivities were reigned over by Queen Sharon Cannon. The Bluze performed under silhouettes of football players, and the Queen sat under a goal post, while her court sat on foot¬ ball benches. 104 Queen and Senior Attendants An unforgettable moment. Homecoming Court Sharon Cannon Homecoming Queen 105 Turkey Day Ends A Draw . . . t- y Anticipating a repeat performance of last year ' s game, Bennett students flocked to the stands for the second annual Turkey Day game. The Clippers led the first half, then lost the lead to the Indians during the third quarter. In the last three seconds of the game, the Clippers missed a touchdown by inches, and the Ben¬ nett fans left the stadium, trying to avoid the 12-12 tie on the score- board. 107 Faculty Frolics Bennett students usually op¬ pose the Bennett faculty and usu¬ ally lose, but in the case of the student-faculty basketball game, the decision was reversed. The teachers were sent dejectedly to the showers with two losses. The girls ' varsity defeated the wom¬ en ' s varsity 36-11, and the boys ' varsity defeated the men ' s faculty 77-65. Not to be outdone were the rustic faculty cheerleaders, who were pulled out of years of storage to give limited encour¬ agement to their failing teams. Better luck next year, Faculty! 108 Bennett Lends A Helping Hand At Home . . . On December 21, the Student Council gave their annual Christmas Party for some twenty- five needy children from the Salisbury area. From 6:30 to 7:00, the boys and girls enjoyed themselves in the Student Lounge, which was decorated for the occasion with a gingerbread house and a Christmas tree. In addition to re¬ freshments, each child received a gift from our own Santa, Ronnie Tilghman. . . And Overseas. In the Bennett tradition of service, we have begun sponsoring a foster child, Chau Soo Man, a third grader living in Hong Kong. A good student in school, Chau enjoys reading and baseball; and in line with this, the Student Council sent him at the beginning of the year, a Bennett baseball cap and postcards of Salis¬ bury. For Christmas, in addition to the money suggested by the agency, he received a base¬ ball and glove. The BYC sponsors this pro¬ gram. 109 Holiday Season Ushered In Holly Ball Queen Donna Aydelotte I 10 The highlight of the holiday season was the Holly Ball on December 16. The cafetorium was decorated with blue and green streamers along with the tradition of the Holly Ball, which hung from the center of the ceiling. In the ski lodge, refreshments were served to anyone who could break away from the music of the Virtues. Setting off the evening was the crowning of the new Holly Queen, Donna Aydelotte, by Sharon Fritz, last year ' s queen. The queen ' s attendants were Alex Niklison, honorary attendant, and Debbie Lowe, representing the senior class. Nancy Hess and Donna Kamanitz were junior class attendants and the sophomore class attendants were Glenda Tawes and Sandi Banks. I myself am confident that you will continue to represent James M. Bennett Senior High School in a worthy manner, no matter where you might go. Your class was the first at Bennett, and thus you are largely responsible for the foundation of many things. You claim the first Bennett Consti¬ tution and the first Student Council. You have set traditions, such as the Holly Ball and the Inaugural Ball. You first tested the Honor System at Bennett and found that in a good school community, it could work well. The theme of the 1967 Voyager states: This is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. It is rather the end of the beginning. This is the beginning of a new life for you, be it a job, college, or the service. Use the knowledge you have gained and try to set as good an example in your life as you have in Bennett. The building blocks which you provided will be added to, and the traditions which you have set will be carried on. You actually represent a strong link in the history of James M. Bennett Senior High School and have been largely responsible for changing Little Jimmy Bennett into James M. Bennett Senior High School. each page. It is hard to represent emotions such as joy or frustration in pictures and paragraphs; but on these one hundred and ninety-two pages, we have tried to give you an overall picture of this year. Many people have worked long and hard on this yearbook and our thanks go to the entire staff and our advisor, Mrs. Earleen Streib. Our special thanks go to David Lank, our photog¬ rapher, and our publishing company represent¬ ative, Mr. Zsolt B.
