DR. WILLIAM BAKER Principal MISS BERNICE BLAETTLER Dean of Girls As you look back upon the school year of 1957-53, Ifefhalfs many years from now, one of the things you may remember is that it was the year of the first man- made satellites. It seems appropriate that this year the AHGUS theme concerns the stars, which bear some relation to satellites and are in fact often confused with them. There are, however, certain fundamental differ- ences. A star creates its own orbit and produces its own illumination, while the orbit of a satellite is fixed by the planet it must follow and it shines only from re- flected light. In our society, both leaders and followers are needed -both stars and satellites. But, what should be remem- bered is that any loss in potential, as when a leader is content to become a follower, is a waste of precious human resource, our greatest national asset. History has shown repeatedly that depletion of human resource even. tuates in depletion of a nation's strength. This may be the year in which you will set your future course. Whether you become a star or a satellite, may God grant that you make full use of what He has given you. W MR. THOMAS DUSEK Dean of Students MR. GEORGE C. HOUSE Vice Principal MR. JOHN J. MURPHY Director of Guidance

THOMAS COLLINS Business Manager af BOARD OF TRUSTEES Robert Steacy M E. McCo1lam, Ann Freeland, George Boeger. Inset Robert Couchman, President The theme for the Argus of 1958 signals the challenges facing mankind. The triumphs over outer space, recorded during this International Geophysical Year provide a prognostication for the future. The responsibilities facing the Class of 1958 and succeeding classes become more significant as man progresses. U Never before have opportunities for young people appeared so rewarding. However, each and every one of you has the responsibility to develope your abilities to the fullest capacity in order to create a richer and fuller life for yourself and the community in which you live. As we gaze into the heavens we can see the bright stars and faint ones, near suns and far. We have every hope that you, the students of James Lick High School, will emerge as bright stars. May I take this opportunity to extend con- gratulations to the Argus Staff for recording the memories of this year and best wishes to the Class of 1958. iv i
