4 G , -was E f www-van: nf 1 3 1 l Commanding Officer CDR R. FRIEDMAN l Captain Robert Friedman, USN, was born in Paso Robles, California, on 8 February 1921. He enlisted in the U. S. Navy as an apprentice seaman on 22 July 1941 and served as an Aviation Machinist's Mate with Scouting Squadron 5 in the South Pacific until he entered Navy flight training in May of 1943. Upon graduation from flight training in September of 1944, he was designated an Aviation Pilot. He was commis- sioned an Ensign, U. S. Navy, on 5 September 1945. a Captain Friedman served in various squadron until his attendance at the General Line School, Monterey, California. Upon completion of this school, he served in Fleet assignments as Communications Officer, USS ROCHESTER QCA-12417 Operations Officer, USS YARNALLQDD-54117 Executive Officer, USS FRANK KNOX QDDR-74217 and Command- ing Officer, USS FALGOUT QDER-3241. His assignments ashore have been as Navy Staff Communications Officer, Joint U. S. Military Group, Spain and Executive Officer, U.S. Naval Communication station, Puerto Rico from which duty he reported to USS JAMES E. KYES CDD-7873. A Executive Officer LCDR J. L. DICK

He served aboard the battleship USS SOUTH DAKOTA throughout World War ll until December 1946. Duringfthis tour of duty he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with Combat V for his meritorious achievement as Main Battery Plotting Room Officer. Subsequent assignments included Aide and Flag Secretary to the Commander Naval Operating Base, Guantanamo Bay: Navigator aboard the USS ROANOKE: Assistant to Director of Naval Reserves at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: Executive Officer of the USS BORIE: Commanding Officer of the USS PARLE: Head of Navigation Section in the Department of Seamanship and Navigation at the Naval Academy: Staff of Commander in Chief US Atlantic Fleet: Commanding Officer USS MULLINIX: Office of Chief of Naval Operations: Commander Destroyer Division 112. Captain Hill relieved Captain Carl R. Dwyer as Commander of Destroyer Squadron Twenty-Three on 15 December 1964.
