Since they are out of sight most of the time, the reason for this seems apparent. But the fact remains that they work under the most adverse condi- tions on the ship, and work the longest too. Yet the odd thing is that they don ' t complain about their lot ; in fact, they ' re almost cheerful about it. Their group is the most closely-knit, effective, working organization on board ; and in what seems to be a paradox, they have the highest esprit de corps on the ship : dirty, sweaty, and tired, but proud. So to them is this dedication given : to the men who have taken this ship across the Pacific Ocean and all over the Western Pacific Ocean, and who. God willing, will someday take us back across it to our own Homeland : the engineers of the Kyes. CHRISTMAS, WESTPAC No matter where you are. who you are, or what the place, where there are children, there is Christmas. Thus another morning dawns over the Western Pacific waters upon which the Kyes is still sailing. It ' s the dawn of a new day, and the dawn of a new year, too. It ' s time to look back, as we ' ve done on these pages, at the Kyes ' vigil in West Pac during I960 and 1961. It may seem as though an eternity has passed while in Asiatic waters, but actually it ' s going on two years. A lot has happened during that time : some of it will be remembered for a long time from now -, some of it is already trying to be forgotten. But looking upon the bright streamers of I962 ' s first morning, a very cheering and reas- surin g promise is seen. Someday in the not-too-distant future of this new 1962 a morning will begin like this one -, but instead of the seas of the Western Pacific Ocean beneath, the shores of Home will bo spreading out a welcome in the dawn ' s growing light. 82 Jay E.
