, From the PrincipoI's Pen A crisis in education is a capsule description of the current national educational scene. The occasional ripples of criticism by business men, college professors, and school personnel has reached ground swell proportions since the orbiting of a satellite by an arch rival. Mediocrity in education has been seized upon as the chief reason for the failure of the United States to achieve this historic scientific phenomenon. Two proposals most commonly cited as means of improving education in our country were in practice in Chicago high schools before the advent of the space age. They are providing an enriched educational program for the academically talented students and more science and mathematics for all students. Since February, 1957 by action of the Chicago Board of Education entering freshmen are required to take in the major fields of study four years of English, three years of social studies, and three years of science and mathematics, either one year of mathematics and two years of science, or vice versa. Recognition of capable upper classmen through placement in star classes has been a part of the program at Bowen High School for more than thirty years. Two years ago honor groups were organized for the more able students at all levels. More recent innovations are before school classes in advanced mathematics and Eng- lish for qualified students and an enriched program for honor students in the college- preparatory course. By tradition Bowen High School has always been in the vanguard of sound education and high standards. The accomplishments of the year attest to the up- holding of that cherished tradition. MY. Eli J- G0ldbel g, Assistant Princlpol TO THE CLASSES OF 1958 In the years to come, on some occasional quiet evening, as you turn the pages of this book and recall the many incidents and activities of high school, you will re- live the glorious and carefree high school days of your youth. The pictures and words of this annual will bring back with keen and knowing interest your former associates, favorite club, the teams on which you played, and perhaps a former charmer of the heart . You will see, also, through your powers of memory, the class- room setting, the little variations in your former teachers' mannerisms, and if you are with former classmates, you will discuss all the pet peeves which were so in- volved in your educational routine. Preserve this yearbook of 1958 for the remain- der of your life, for it is the only recorded instrument through which you may continue to vividly retain the years you spent at Bowen. May your days ahead prove to be as fruitful, invigorating and thought provok- ing as the time you spent at Bowen, and may they also be happy and prosperous ones as you journey through life. ff Page Twelve
