ELI j. GOLDBERG EDYTHE M. LYNCH Assistant Principal Acting Assistant Principal To The Graduates With graduation, your dream of four years will have come to fruition. You, like hundreds before you, will join the company of those who have graduated from Bowen, a high school rich in tradition and one that has made an honored place for itself in the South Chicago Community. This book is the pictured record of your final year at Bowen. Today the faces of your friends and teachers are etched clearly in your mind's eye, but as the days grow into years, those mental images will become dimmer and dimmer as new people and experiences crowd into your lives. It is then that this book will become your treasure trove. Guard it well. May the ambitions and dreams that you have nurtured while here become a reality! May success and happiness be the larger share of your lives! But if failures should come, as they sometimes will, do not let them dim your spirits. Instead, let them be learning experiences. Then move on to better things with renewed effort and confidence. Remember that success does not come easily. It must be earned. If your high school days have stimulated, even to a small degree, your love of learning, your days at Bowen will have been well spent. May learning continue to be a part of your lives, and then may you, like Tennyson's Ulysses, Follow knowledge like a sinking siar, Beyond the utmost bound of bnfnan ilnozzgbff' eiriretnft g Twelve

Though different in nature, both are significant in the life of the school. They are the change in school bound- aries and the approval of a school philosophy or creed. Once again our school district has contracted in size. Heretofore, the eastern boundary was Lake Michigan and the state line, now it is Lake Michi- gan and the Calumet River. The new Washington School occasioned che change. Regretfully Bowen accepts the loss of the East Side and Hegewisch communities. Students from these sections have always been a valuable asset in school activities. Beginning freshman students enrolled in the new school last February. In September, freshman and sophomore students currently attending Bowen and residing in these areas will be transferred. Our best wishes accom- pany their transfer to the modern, beautiful community school. Elsewhere in this Annual is printed the Bowen High School Creed. Dur- ing the year a faculty committee considered and approved the school philo- sophy or creed. Simply defined, a philosophy is a statement of belief. In this instance, it is what the faculty believes the educational program of the school should do for the students who participate in it. The philosophy serves as a measuring stick for evaluating the effectiveness of the educational program and as a reference frame for its revision. Never static, the school philosophy or creed responds to changes in the general aims of education resulting from progress in social, political, and economic living. fa- aiceaaaf
